Did you know that Coachella lost so much money its first year that they couldn’t afford to do it a second year?
Today we are diving into the history of Coachella aka the most talked about music festival for the past 20 years. They are a great example that in order to be “popular” you have to be willing to be “polarizing”.

I am so confused about who they are talking about because surely it couldn't be the absolute ICON Madonna that's been famous since 1983.

It’s refreshing listening to a podcast where the host actually knows what they are talking about. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tuned into a podcast and they’re chatting about something they know nothing about

Absolutely look forward to your guys videos always, so please don't take this the wrong way... but I feel we need to set the record straight on Madonna, because that woman paved the way from the 80s for every single female pop icon who came in her wake... she has so much incredible influence. I know you guys didn't mean to discredit that & it was probably a mistake, but I would highly encourage you to explore her history & impact as an artist! She is truly so unbelievably meaningful & influential! The definition of a trailblazer and she came to Coachella already a legend with over 3 decades at the top of her field. Anyways, love you guys!! Sorry to be a know it all, but my Gen X mother raised me to be loyal to Madge until the day I die and I have to perform that duty. Would love an episode on Madonna one day once you've gotten into her!

Agreed. Loving these videos but I had to do a rewind when they started talking about Madonna. I'm like... "Madonna, Madonna?"... I'm an elder Millennial so I was a toddler when Like A Prayer came out. Her discography is EXTENSIVE. An equivalent artist would be someone like Cher, Dolly Parton or Diana Ross from the 70's. I definitely wasn't around for that but I knew of their cultural impact. I wonder if for Gen Z it's harder to decipher that kind of stuff because it's all coming at them at the same time. All songs available 24/7. Nicky/Coco if you read this comment (you said you read them lol)... what do you think?
@Desert_Jess
@Desert_Jess 5 ай бұрын
@@theresacottoneyes! I'm an elder millennial too and there are definitely videos of young men vouging, dancing to Like A Prayer. Ray of Light was a CD I owned, not my mom. I rented Evita for like 3 months straight, so again I'm confused on who is the Madonna they are talking about lmao

27:05 - Taylor Swift's song is called "fortnight" which is much more likely referring to a period of two weeks instead of the video game! Its still *possible* that it is about fortnite but probably not :)

Just went to bad bunny’s concert in salt lake to kick off his tour and he had necklaces that they gave out to fans with lights in them that were programmed to light up in sync with certain songs. Visually it was wild! Such a cool effect and made me think of your podcast haha

Love this channel but I cringed at the Madonna part. She had over 20 US top 10 hits before that point & only 2 afterwards. Her peak (late 80s/early 90s) had long passed. Coachella didn't help her popularity at all

Maybe you don't know this but there was a lot of push back on Madonna in 2003 for the American Life single and album. And that performance of Hung Up was probably the first time people heard the song which is one of her biggest singles EVER...

I’ve always wanted to go to Coachella since I was a kid. I was 11 years old watching Coachella vlogs on KZbin. I was in love with Calvin Harris music and always imagine to see him there. Last year was my first year unexpectedly going to Coachella having forgot about it not even had seen the lineup I got tickets. Happened to be Calvin Harris was going to be there😢 I’ve never had a better time of my life.

I know this sounds like a really weird request, but it's a topic that can be explored so much and I would like to hear your take on it. In the history of Broadway, you can look through the biggest musicals year by year and by listening to their sound hear the progression from classic Rodgers and Hammerstein to modern day genres (pop, rap, hip hop, etc.). A couple "popular" examples of this are Carousel (1943, very classical sound) - Hamilton (2015, incorporates rap and hip hop heavily). I would absolutely love it if you guys could have an episode about why you think that is and how that fits into the pop culture zeitgeist throughout the decades. ps I love your channel, and I think you guys are so smart and meticulous with your research. your preparedness makes your podcast enjoyable!! love you girlies!! Also, please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about the topic, I would love to answer them!!

I definitely thought olivia was going to headline coachella this year too because there's a gap in april between her tour dates! my guess is they didn't want her as a headliner this year so she is waiting until she is a headliner to do coachella. she also has amazing visuals on her tour (including a moon that she flied over the crowd and sings her songs on) that definitely would translate well to the coachella stage. however, for this year's coachella, im most excited to see both sabrina carpenter and reneé rapp's set!

I rarely comment but i have to say i really agree with your comments about BTS as headliners breaking the internet. I think if they go to coachella, they would easily beat beyonce’s record for most number of viewers on a livestreamed performance. When jhope, just a single member, headlined lollapalooza, the livestream had about 15 million viewers worldwide before it crashed from the traffic. I can’t wait!

It’s one of my fav podcasts ❤ I’d love if y’all had momuncharted on here to talk about family bloggers. She has really exposed that industry and it needs to be talked about more. Also what’s appropriate to post of your kids. You won’t to post them but you don’t want to show too much. Show their face or keep it turned? What if you’ve already shown their face do you just stop? Anyways would love to hear talk about this. ❤ keep up the amazing work!

You guys should do a Comments Cast or “Share your comments” ep where you guys cover briefly on topic suggested from us. Also I need Coachella this year to sponsor Vanessa Hutchins returning, I need her to do a onstage speech, and I need her to Collab with some DJ remixing her infamous “it’s inevitable” into a dance mix in the poorest taste.

I really, really hope you’re wrong about live music events going virtual… There’s something about being physically together with strangers who like what you like and your enjoying it together… to go virtual feels like destroying something sacred. What is live music if not being a part of the atmosphere and energy? But who knows - maybe this is a hot take.
