As a 30 year old it is soooooo annoying how much we marketed to with nostalgia bait. Like we don’t want fruit loop themed dog toys, but they’re doing everything to feed it to us 😂

Absolutely loved this episode and it articulated so many of my own thoughts so well. Also about Percy Jackson, I’m an 05 baby and i remember my third grade class literally having full blown debates deciding between Harry Potter and Percy Jackson being the better series, so Percy Jackson was definitely huge for my age group 😂
@zoyapatel642911 ай бұрын
Also to elaborate on the nostalgia stuff- I completely agree that the nostalgia stuff is great if it offers something new to the story and also if there’s enough time between the original stuff and the new stuff. The hunger games was different cuz it’s IP was a book, but it still offered something new to the franchise. Top Gun Maverick did so well cuz they waited like 30 years before releasing this one and even then it was a great movie. I would also say that a nostalgia factor of the Disney princess live actions is that they often don’t offer a new perspective or if they do it has no real purpose. I felt the Aladdin live action was done really well cuz they gave that extra motivation for jasmine’s character in a way that was still very aligned with her. Anyway those r a few of my scattered thoughts from listening to this episode 😅

Adding on, like you said there is a weird obsession with always needing a second, third and fourth season when the show has clearly finished, like Shogun. People want more but the creator is refusing because they literally covered everything from the book and he doesn’t see why they need to make anymore seasons

This is great! I agree with everything! I will add that I think a lot of new things are constantly being made, but by the time it gets mainstream it’s not new anymore. I said this before, but I love the back and forth and how you guys break things down. Also I was in the Percy Jackson Club! I first read it when I was like 8 or 9 I think. I’m 25 now. For Scholastic, I used to get like scented erasers or like those tricolors pens.

I read the Percy Jackson books right when the second series was ending (Heroes of Olympus), I was born in '04. PJO was super popular at my school, everyone read the books (and the Harry Potter series too) and would go off about them randomly.

(Only a minute in) Our generation that is in our 20’s now were teens in the 10’s and didn’t have access to $$ to buy things whenever. Now, we’re adults and can afford it, AND we can buy it for our kids, and now teenagers are making more money too so there’s that market too. They can sell me my childhood but they really need to get back to creating for kids of this generation because I don’t wanna share my memories with them (jk) but I think they deserve some icons of their own! People to aspire to be that are around their age .. we need raw talent

I've noticed the constant reboots and remakes and sequels amd prequels in the past few years...and nostalgia marketing was sweet for a while but I'm soo sick of it. I'm sick of old stories being retold again and again in ways that aren't even original or fresh. Now that 2023 is ending I've thought about the movies that have been huge this year and even though some are good, most of them are honestly unnecessary. I really want new stories, new actors and new opportunities for other people in the industry to blow up. If I miss a story from my childhood i can just rewatch it.
@user-fe8uq9zp2g11 ай бұрын
100% agree everything is a remake/reboot. People do want new stuff but if you actually look at the top movies this year it’s mostly IPs we know. not only that TikTok is FULL of nostalgia bate. it probably has to do with covid and the state of the world in general and the abundance of screens / lack of connectivity. people are longing for the “better days” (which nostalgia paints with rose colored glasses) and this trickles down into our media! yes studios are making all of these nostalgia bate movies but why are they being watched? everyone was crying to be a young girl again when Barbie came out and adults lining up to see the little mermaid. idk I’m gen z and I’ve been seeing nostalgia hate in TikTok for 2015 KZbinrs and makeup which is not that long ago. people are even nostalgia hating for 2014 which wasn’t that long ago tbh. Kids these days don’t care that’s why they don’t get new things. idk if you have a gen alpha in your family but they aren’t watching tv or Disney plus they are literally on Netflix just watching whatever is trending & it’s the same for music whatever is trending on TikTok. there is no market atm for this preteen/teen so companies don’t invest in it. i really hope we get new and exciting projects coming up! everything feels like I’ve heard of it before.

Marvel is an interesting business case study. They were kind of losing steam because their IP was kind of dying out of public knowledge. They still had a strong toy market, but comic books were dying/dead industry. Then they decided to pivot into the film industry and make all their films in house starting marvel studios. doing so allowed them to control the IP, cast the same actors, and build a strong brand image. Then they sold to Disney. I’m sure they’re rolling in it.

(I had my oldest as a teen in 2011, at 19) they’ve known the movie mean girls, and it’s a classic staple of my teenage years. I just feel like as an early 90s millennial either you have teenagers or no kids so there is contrasting feelings to the “not your mothers mean girls”. And I just went to a scholastic book fair last week. It’s the same except now you can find Taylor swift and Harry styles golden books 😂😂

I think the first book I have ever bought of the Scholastic book fair was a children’s book, I was 7, and I bought Rainbow Magic Shannon the Ocean Fairy by Daisy Meadows. As a 7 year old who wasnt interested in books at that time, read this, got super invested in reading the series got another book about fairies Honestly, I never read Percy Jackson. My friend in high school was a crazy fan of Percy Jackson though. Back when I was in middle school, I was more into Divergent. I’m not sure if I remember my friends in middle school ever reads a Percy Jackson book. I do remember that my school LOVED Maze Runner, it was the hyped back then, everybody in school love love love the Maze Runner books. But i don’t really get the hype, cuz I’m more of a Divergent girl than anything else😂 so when everyone reads Maze Runner, I read my Divergent book ahahahah. Side note: I have never read Percy Jackson book but I do love the movies, I’m not to sure how to feel on the new Percy Jackson movie though. The same thing happened with the Maze Runner book, never read it, but loved the movies!

I love this podcast!!!! Can you do a podcast on Miley Cyrus media predictions? Miley released “Flowers” in January 2023 it became a #1 hit and the girl NEVER performed it live aside from her disney+ backyard session and she performed it for her friends on her birthday, but never for a live audience. Usually Miley promotes her album on Jimmy Fallon and performs her album’s single live but this year she didnt she only promoted her last NYE special? Then she posted a documentary on Tiktok to celebrate her 30th birthday and her song “used to be young” . the girl doesn’t wanna go on tour so shes missing out on some MONEY. What are your predictions? Its clear she closed a chapter of her life with that documentary series and her dying her hair haha but i feel like something BIG is coming from her in 2024 but what?

Green Day meltdown at the iHeart radio in 2012 is a decent marker. They were the penultimate 90s punk band (the “Dookie” era) but were so good they reinvented themselves and became the penultimate 2000s pop punk band (the “American Idiot” era) just as they were losing relevance. In 2010, they were headed back to their 90s roots, dropping the eyeliner and the theatrics. The meltdown for me symbolizes the death of that emo aesthetic that Green Day helped cement into pop culture. They wanted to kill it. The irony is that they weren’t brought along for the 2010s 90s nostalgia ride after that (see surf punk bands like FIDLAR) because Billie had to go to rehab, and the tour they were on to support those back-to-basics albums was cut in half. Promotion wasn’t as good as it could have been, considering how big Green Day still was. That said, would they really have needed to join that 90s nostalgia ride if they were already that band in the 90s?
@bridgetvanvalzah2539 ай бұрын
I think another possible factor to consider that contributes to nostalgia-bait is that much of the orginal source material used for this repackaged content is not familiar to younger generations, so film/music/art creators can continue to monetize off the original concept with a younger audience in mind that's just now discovering this stuff.

I love sequels when they’re done well like How to train your dragon or Indiana Jones (most of them, not the two recent ones) and I’m not a fan of prequels because I already know where the story is going and especially if it’s a tragedy, why would I watch it if I know it’s going to end in disaster. For example, I watched 5 episodes of House of the Dragon and then just watched recaps on KZbin because I couldn’t watch everything descend into madness.

Mean girls is a great example of this. That movie is absolutely iconic, what is the point of remaking it? Sure, young people today may find it relatable, but just make a new plot! Make an entirely new movie!! There’s no need to piggyback off of something existing. The only reason they would do this is to bring in previous eyeballs and generate more cash. Cocoe absolutely nailed it re fast fashion. Art is being ruined by capitalism. Everyone’s in a rush for new content that none of it’s actually good. We find ourselves revisiting old films because they are much more nuanced and thought out. More impactful. Less flippant.
