Produced by Avanti Films, distributed by Macmillan Films, Inc., and directed by Max Miller, this 1971 film titled “The Police Film,” is a social commentary style documentary that sheds light on the issue of police distrust and conflict between law enforcement and citizens. With narration by American actor and director Ben Gazzara, the film pieces together dramatic recreations of factual events with interviews of high and low ranking police officials and civilians. It was likely made as public relations material to improve the overall perception of police and to remind the viewer of their function and responsibility to all citizens. Official description: "Viewers hear from police chiefs in Los Angeles, Atlanta and New York; members of the Black Panthers, Chicanos and hippies; and a spokesman for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Provides a close look at an ordinary cop on the beat."
Conflict between police and hippie protesters (0:20). Police officer rescuing man tangled in climbing equipment off rock’s edge (0:39). Contrasting image of same cop in protest and rescue scenario (1:20). Narrator Ben Gazzara sitting in living room talking to camera (1:24). Ants as analogy for police system (2:44). Scene of Neanderthals sitting around a fire (3:47). White blood cells under a microscope (4:18). Clips of people stopped on the street giving commentary on their view of police (4:33). Riot police looking at protesters’ signs (5:28). Black and white photos of police officers doing their duties (5:51). Photos turn to color and become a moving montage showing the many roles officers take on (6:12). Confrontation between police officers and thief (6:29). Officer saving kid from drowning (7:03). Officer mediating minor conflict between cashier and customer (7:23). Officer delivering a baby (8:02). Officer talking woman out of jumping off a bridge (8:25). Cop car responding to a call (9:22). College graduation (9:40). Riot police blocking path of protesters (9:59). Interview with former Police Commissioner of New York City, Patrick V. Murphy (10:28). Clips of everyday people and opinion on the police profession (12:11). Interview with cadets at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Academy (12:48). Interview with police officers with a few years of experience in Covina, Washington D.C., and New York City (14:16). Interview with Atlanta police chief Herbert Jenkins on policy of Mayor Sam Messel (15:21). Interview with director of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Academy, captain Kenneth Cape on progressive officer education (16:55). Staged class at academy about mob psychology (18:31). Community of Van Nuys and Los Angeles Police community relations program (20:43). Clips of Covina Southern California (22:35). Interview with Covina Police Chief Ferguson (23:00). Riverside County Jail police officers as prisoners program, cops going through mugging and fingerprinting process (24:40). How police engaged with and contained people at the Moratorium March on Washington, interview with Police Chief of Washington D.C., Chief Wilson (27:02). Interview with director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, Eason Monroe (29:12). Public opinion interviews about police accountability and reform (31:53). Interview with an anonymous woman (32:39). Bomb explosion (33:41). Commentator speaks about importance of police in suppressing violence, while at the same time defending the right to free speech. Garazza speaks about violence harming people on both sides of the issue.
The film was associate produced by Sam Altonian, photographed and edited by Jeff Miller, with music by J. Jayem.

Don't want negative interactions? Don't do stupid things. My interactions with police as an adult are limited to accident reports and when customers (I sell guns and you get certain types) do something that necessitates calling them. I've got some stories. People will fail the paperwork miserably, throw fits, scream buzzwords, and knock displays over like that's going to improve their situation. One homeless man called the police saying we were denying his 2nd Amendment rights because we wouldn't sell him a gun without a current address. He left, came back, and was eventually removed by an officer after failing the 4473 anyway (just collecting info) delivering the usual clichéd buzzwords on the way out. He was pacing up and down the other side of the street for hours while the police stayed parked in front keeping an eye on him. The officer confided of all the people he'd dealt with there; he was the most likely to come back and make trouble. Fortunately, we haven't seen him since. I had a woman who was denied and threatened to come back and kill us all. She got a visit from the sheriff's department that night. One guy pointed his gun right at me as I came out of the back saying "you got any ammo for this?" thinking he was being funny. He was told to leave the store, refused until he was waited on, and had a squad car waiting for him when he exited ten minutes later. A teenager trying to buy a handgun with his older (and taller) brother's ID. Then there's dealing with straw purchases, shoplifters, collecting information on denials, etc. Funny how the people I always see having negative interactions always seem to be doing something wrong.

We really need to have a National Carry Act so that everyone who can legally carry does not have to PAY for permission to carry a weapon. I don’t know about now but how on earth could a police officer earn less than a pizzeria employee????, if that was/is the level of reward a police officer got/gets it is small wonder that police departments, not just in the USA, are understaffed, and they are forced into employing people who are not really suitable for the task of enforcing the law, and being underpaid and undervalued is an invitation to the criminal element to turn good officers into corrupt officers, and then when they are caught for taking bribes etc we, the citizens of our respective countries, are outraged and angry that they were recruited in the first place, the old saying of “pay peanuts 🥜 and you get monkeys 🙈 🙈🙊” is fitting for the issues. @ 1:59 the question was “police brutality” or “self defence”????, in my opinion the answer is neither, the are “doing the job they were UNDERpaid for” why do we tend to throw police officers (or any uniformed public servants) under the bus?, here in the United Kingdom there has been a number of cases involving police officers for corruption, murder, sexual assault/rape, all of which is despicable and heinous, however, there have also been cases of officers who, in the course of their duties, made a mistake that caused people harm, and in one case (that I know of) the suspect died from being shot by an armed officer, and he was charged with murder, it was not a deliberate shooting (to my knowledge) the officer made a fatal error that cost a man his life, it is sad and upsetting but it was a pure mistake, and yet he is/was facing time in jail for his actions, and once again the MSM and SM platforms vilified the man without any mercy or consideration of the consequences for the man or his family, that doesn’t just make me angry it makes me ashamed of the way he was treated by our government and judiciary, it’s no wonder that we now have a shortage of armed response officers, many of them decided to stop being in the armed response units because of the possibility that they could be next to be charged with murder for doing their job, mistakes happen and, sadly, innocent people have their lives ruined or ended, it is wrong to destroy a person for making a mistake. Isn’t it amazing that we are still having the same issues and problems that they had when this film was made (1971), the only difference is that the problems have got worse, far from finding solutions we have found many more issues and problems that police officers and citizens have been forced to face every single day, and the police are being blamed for the problems arising in the first place.

Now this film could be more inclusive if it were made today because nobody trusts the police. it's one of the few things all Americans have in common now.

You must never come in contact with CopSuckers. These are the people who call the police if they think you hit your kids. If they see you recording the cops, they will scream at you and berate you for practicing your 1A rights. Some people TRUST the POLICE. Too many people do imo!

@Arthur Morgan I was an Army and civilian cop and I was a good one. I'm very proud of my service to the citizens of this great nation. How do you serve America?
