"Nothing better than to see a legendary band kick ass in their prime." Agreed, super high energy there near the end. Sting has had such a long career we've been able to see him mellow out and become a very chilled performer, but he was "full on" energy at this time in his life.

Yes love Stings songwriting and singing, and Copeland's incredible drum fills, but please let's not forget Andy Summers rock solid guitar playing- and all those great riffs he came up with for The Police songs.
@NojusVala
@NojusVala 10 жыл бұрын
Andy didn't come up with riffs (it was almost always Sting and sometimes Stewart Copeland who created guitar riffs for Police songs). If you watch older documentaries about "Police" you will see how they worked. Most of the ideas and parts (riffs, lyrics) were created solely by Sting (especially in the period of 1978-1984). He would go to a room and play around with guitar, come up with some lyrics, then he'll record that on tape (using multiple instruments, including drum machine), then he will show it to the band, they will play it immediatly and go straight to record studio. Sting had very big ego, so did Stewart Copeland (though he was almost forced to give up writing songs after it was clear from quite early on that Sting's songs were much more popular thus even labels preferred Sting as a songwriter). There was no room for Andy Summers in the process of songwriting (and coming with ideas for them) at all. He was just merely a musician who played what he was told to play. Plus Andy Summers was 10 years older and thus always there was somewhat bigger distance between him and remaining two members of Police. There was only one exception, though: Andy Summers created riff for "every breath you take" (that song is basically based on chord progression of "Stand by me") but Sting's ego was big enough to claim himself as the only songwriter of that song (and collected all the royalties).
@ericscottstevens
@ericscottstevens 10 жыл бұрын
Nojus Vala Pretty much underlying the blueprint for a Police breakup in 1984. Two huge egos of Copeland and Sumner at each others throat. Summers the older replacement career session guitar player who as "Sting" credited as being aptly able to play the "expensive" guitar notes. But as the junior member Summers guitar skills helped heighted the songwriting with his lead and rhythm guitar playing over Padovani's ability. Have to say those Summers and Copeland inspired songs put on the mid to later Police albums were pretty dry and forgetful. It is almost as Sting refused to spice up these Copeland and Summers composed songs as to tell the A&M music execs and listening audience who really was the star at writing all the good songs for The Police.

@@NojusVala Andy himself says he wrote the riffs for bring on the night, message in a bottle, walking on the moon and Roxanne, among others. To suggest he played absolutely zero part in songwriting over the course of 5 albums is just ludicrous.

Andy was not a shredder by any stretch but he did have a way of making "less sound like more" and I like that actually. It's not how many notes you play: it's how you play them. I saw The Police in '79 at the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Texas and they blew the place away. They were called back for 5 encores and on the last one Sting told us "We've played everything we know." The crowd kept stomping so he said "Well, we'll play some again." And they did replay 2 songs....Quite a night...They had not hit it really big at that point but I could see the handwriting on the wall.

Saw them in 2006(?). First concert I went to where they sold seats behind the stage. Only ones I could afford. Perfectly happy to look down right at SC. The other two would walk around from time to time and play to us, but I was happy just watching Copeland work.

Like 'em or not. I resisted back then. No, disliked them, in 1979. But dammit! Their intensity and commitment is undeniable! Seen them a handful of times. Great musicians.

And yet.... their first major and international single release came in April of 1978. Their first album was released at the end of 1978. Their second album was released at the end of 1979. Of their 5 albums, 3 were released in the 80s. All of their major tours were conducted in the 80s. Their stardom was fully achieved in the 80s. The bulk of their work was between 1980 - 1985. As for them "paving the road for bands transitioning into the new decade", they made a name for themselves after releasing Outlandos D'Amour by touring with already established, similar European acts like Cherry Vanilla and the Electric Chairs... then becoming the opening act for the Clash (an act which could truly be described as paving roads for transitioning bands). At least research the facts before you call someone else stupid... for being correct.

So what ur saying is if The Police released a song in 1978 that would mean they released it in the 70sis that it ?
@Unlitedsoul
@Unlitedsoul 7 жыл бұрын
No, what I'm saying is that the Police was more of an 80s band, since all they really did in the 70s was their debut album and tours... which weren't all that popular until they released Reggatta de Blanc at the end of 1979. Outlandos D' Amour didn't do much at all until mid 1980 when the Police were starting to gain traction because of Reggatta, and more so because of Zenyatta Mondatta released at the end of 1980. Calling the Police a "70s band" because they released their debut album in 1978 when all of their success came after February of 1980... is like calling Nirvana an "80s band" because they released Bleach at the end of 1988, despite no one knowing who they were until Nevermind was released in 1991.

Frenetic but controlled drumming--Stewart Copeland is the best! And Andy Summers' playing is so nuanced and brings just enough to make the music soar to new heights... And Sting? Genius. 'Nuff said.
