Back in the 90s when I was stationed locally, I don't think they had a visitor centre then. As you drove past on the A303 you could see all the stones clearly from the main road. Not sure about that now, as I haven't been near the place since way back.

We did too, in the 1960s. Going down the A303 for holidays in Cornwall we were all excited about a break at Stonehenge where you could just walk into the stones. All this "protection" now is clearly just to make money rather than to stop vandalism.....aka what happened with Just Stop Oil a few months ago. Those fences just ooze spite towards the public. Avebury (so far, anyway) is a much more atmospheric experience than Stonehenge because you can mingle with the sarsens.

I used to drive past this place along the A303 quite often in my Army days, going to and fro from Warminster. As for aircraft helicopters etc, they certainly fly over it. I've been in helicopters that have flown over it, got to see it for free 😂😂😂😂.

Girl on right with glasses is an example of this. She states her case, then mostly shuts up and stares blindly once she can’t compute the situation or can’t cope with someone questioning her. If you go through the housing estate close by and get to Fargo Road it's a short walk to the public footpath, although you can't walk around the stones you walk alongside the paying visitors and are as close as you can get, separated by a fence , for free.

This part got me too. She isn't familiar with Bernoulli's principle or the venturi effect clearly. Whilst wind speed often increases with elevation, having things like mountains, cliffs and valleys causes more pain for unpredictable winds than a flat wide open field. I fly drones. I live in the Highlands. I've experienced it too often.

If you search on google there is a copy of a letter from the CAA confirming that it is legal to fly over English Heritage and National Trust land as they don’t own the air space and provided you follow the drone rules!

In the early 70's I rode my motorbike from Chippenham to Stonehenge, parked up next to the stones, sat in the circle and had a cig or two. Did that quite a few times. No car park, no fences, no pathways and NO CHARGE. Haven't bothered going back since it became a tourist zone, drove past it a few years ago and was amazed by the crowds.

Yeap I remember that. The good old days when it was free. People use to flock there for the summer solistice too
