I think it's worth mentioning that there isn't really an Indonesian culture, Bandung shares a fairly specific Western Javanese sensibility that isn't really reflected in other parts of Indonesia. The country was formed out of a 20th century desire for uniform control, but in a practical sense, it's remained 100s/1000s of different cultures spread across 1000s of islands that stretch over vast distances. What people believe in Iran Jaya, or Sulawesi, or Bali, or Ambon, or wherever else you can mention, varies greatly; the islands of Indonesia hold a great deal of untapped potential for horror. As others who have commented have said, we need much more variety, more non-Western perspectives to weigh in on the gaming landscape.

You call it out in the video and I want to second it: translating the writing textures to English, instead of layering English translation on top of the screen, is an absolutely wild amount of work and an incredible attention to detail. I can't begin to imagine the undertaking of that. Holy moly.

Why? Surely you just design 2 of each texture as you do it and transition between them? Not trying to devalue their work, I just cant work out how/why it could be such a monumental task?

@@darcgibson5099 Sure, the technical aspect is relatively easy, but translating a whole game is not an easy feat. There's a reason it's a whole team in the big studios, and they're not really a big studio.

duuuuuuuude, having the game let you piss off the ghost in-game is so much cooler than it just *being mad* at the start of the game. What a cool idea! I'd love to see that expanded upon in a systems driven/emergent game

Ngl hearing Pocong being called Pho-kong is kinda funny lmao. That aside, I'm glad to see someone not Indonesian talking about Pamali with some more insight than just "ooo sbooky goast game" cause honestly it kinda need more light shed on it and the project as a whole, cause it's super neat. It's legitimately have better play feel and dabble with actual Indonesian horror lore more closely and respectfully than DreadOut which is just "Outlast with vaguely Indonesian theme."

I can relate with the scrariness of the second one, Im indonesian and you see, in my military training waay back then, i gotta sleep in graveyard just like this one. I was scareeeed, all the taboo was spinning in my head... But yeah im too fucking tired and sleep like baby haha Im scared not of the ghost or things like that, but of the repurcussion of not respecting and offending the dead, because this kind of pamali has a long term effect according to the old folk. But yeaah.. im doing just fine. I just got fat Edit: oh wait... Those damn ghosts making me love cakes all these times

same lol we'd patrol some crazy old cemeteries because it was along the base perimeter and as long as we followed tradition and advice from our seniors, we could basically do anything we want like seating on headstones/sleeping atop the cool surface etc. All we had to do was have the intention of 'borrowing' the space respectfully in our minds or to announce your intentions using your voice. one day, a newbie didn't take the advice seriously and came down with a serious fever that gave him hallucinations. On the days he was able to do guard with us, he was complaining about shadows and seeing corpse linen appearing but disappearing as soon as he got a focus on it during the cemetery sector. Only figured it out when the dude was blabbing away on duty with a much more senior officer. ritual stuff was done, warnings and briefings given but none were on the books because well, supernatural. Newbie was fine soon after and I don't really know if my theory is right but that place seems to be a strategic off-grid mass execution site back during the war because it already had really old weathered graves there so no one would suspect a thing.

Well done for describing pamali as simply "supernatural manners". I'm an Indonesian myself and i couldn't think of any better words to describe it. Even if people were to ask me what a pamali is, I probably wouldn't be able to put it into words. You see, it's just something that I, and probably most other Indonesians, immediately understood. This concept of not to do this or that because it's a pamali has been drilled into my head since I was little. Also, as far as I know (fellow Indonesians please correct me if i'm wrong), the concept of pamali is limited to the java island, especially the city of Bandung where the developer of this game is. This might explain why the hungry witch feels so... detached compared to the other chapters (no pun intended). The Leak is mainly a Balinese folklore so there probably isn't that much pamali to begin with. So I get why the developer would tackle a different angle on that one. But yeah knowing that makes it feels more tacked on. With that being said, I have no doubt that people outside of the java island have their own pamalis even if it's called by a different name. I do have some pamali experience myself when I was in Lombok, an island further east of Java and Bali. I was on a business trip there and at night I decided to go for a midnight stroll with my colleague. We wanted to do a little stargazing so we figured that we'd walk up to the tallest hill to get the best view. That hill was quite a distance from our cottage though. And we basically have no idea what the road will look like. And turned out, after a few meters of walking, the road was pitch black. I started thinking about those supernatural beings and just carelessly told my colleague "You know, what'll we do if they show up?" I said "Don't be sompral" my colleague replied. I immediately realized the mistake I've made, I shouldn't have said anything about them because that'll only invite them (this is what being 'sompral' is). Sure enough, after a few meters more of walking we met someone. It's some dude with a hoodie. My colleague greeted him and he replied with silence. He just walked over us and then stopped walking after passing us by. I didn't get any strange vibe from the guy... except this dude had no face. When he walked over us, I tried to get a good look at his face and I see... nothing. Pitch black. Like I couldn't make out any face at all, not even an outline. It's as though as it's hollow. Of course, it could be easily dismissed due to the poor lighting condition. I never talked about it afterwards until a few months after. It was when I told that strange occurrence to the other colleagues that this colleague that went with me joined in. He too confirmed that he saw nothing inside that hoodie. No face, no outlines, nothing. Again, it's probably just a normal dude with a hoodie seen in a poor lighting condition. But the fact that I was being sompral just moments before makes me believe that that guy in a hoodie was something else. I don't know man. Just mind your supernatural manners if you ever come here. Better safe than sorry.

Even being European myself, we have our own Pamali. So even though non indonesian natives may not understand the phrase, we do understand what the supernatural superstistions are. I'm from Scotland and Gaelic and Celtic heritage, we have many Pamali that we stick to, although modern culture and atheism is taken grasp of our land, so younger generation are starting to kind of lose our cultural roots. Even though I'm not Indonesian, I can attest that Pamali seems to be mainly from the Java Island. My wife is Betawi and from Jakarta and she strongley follows Pamali (even though she is Muslim and in Islam we do not really believe in supernatural occurances or superstitions, so we both kind of share that in common, where out cultral heritage mixes with our religion, but because from young age we have been taught about Pamali (superstitions) we are still uneasy about breaking them lol). For example my wife knocks on each door she enters, even in hotel rooms and say "assalamualaikum" to greet and be kind of spirits that may be there. I reminds me of my grandmother in Scotland, she always used to knock on doors before entering, even in her own home and used to say it's a mark of respect to the dead because in Celtic culture we believe that we share our homes with other spirits, so it was pretty cool to see similiar traits from two very different cultures that exist on different ends of this planet. Also her mother had never met many Bule before and she was hesitant that cultures would conflict, but she took a really big liken to me when I first met her many years ago and she was supprised that the manerism of Celtic people where exactly the same as Indonesian and the strong family bond and respect for elders where exactly the same and she was excited to listen to stories of my culture and extremely suprised to how similiar it was Indonesia (though even we had polarising cultures and where typically nothing alike, if that makes sense). Also during the night time my wife even gets scared to mention the word "ghost", she is very mindful about not angering or annoying spirits. I remember one night we where walking from Kelapa Ganding mall in Jakarta and we took a shortcut away from the main roads, my wife wanted to get a gojek but I told her to stop being so lazy (in scotland we love to walk everywhere and not overuse public transport unless necessary). Also it was dark and I really like when Jakarta is quiter during the night and the nice warm air and the sounds of nature. It just felt nice and peacful and good night time walk to relax and I love to take in and see my surroundings (as Jakarta is massive and I want to eventually learn and see everywhere so I can become as comfortable as the natives at navigating the city). We where walking through a neighbourhood and it was really small, mixed with tradional betawi houses and modern apartments and lots of trees and gardens and I remeber saying for a joke that maybe we might even be lucky to see a kuntilanak in the rubber tress lol. This set my wife off, she instantly freaked out and said Shhh shh" dont say that word and don't speak about. She had a really bad reaction of fear and I late found out that speaking about ghosts at night can anger spirits and maybe they might think you are mocking them. So yeah, that was one of my first hand experiences of Pamali and from my wife I have learned many different customs of this. It's really interesting. Also in Indonesia it's weird, I feel a sort of mystic energy, I cant' describe it, but it has made me understand why these cultral customs exist. Bali is where I felt this energy more, I really cannot describe it, it's more of feeling than something I can demostrate. Like it ecompasses all around you. Really interesting place Indonesia, it certainly has a mystic vibe around it and makes me love the place eveen more (I mean the people I meet, the food, the customs and the culture is also what made me fall in love with the nation).

Pamali is just translated as “superstition”, “bad luck”, or “evil omen” then. Every culture has stuff like that. In the US we have superstitions too lol. People think it's bad luck to toast with water, or to open an umbrella indoors. Idk why you think this is something specific to Indonesia.

The word "Pamali" (which is a Sundanese one) has similar meaning to English word "Taboo." Both words are about things we should not do, often associated with bad things (but not always about supernatural things). Anyone who is Sundanese by origin, or people who live near Pamali river in Brebes district, know better about this thing. It's safe to say, though, all cultures around the world have their own form of Pamali.

In The Little Devil, the tension between understanding The Lore versus getting to the pawn shop strikes me as more thematically sound than you suggest. It's fundamentally a moral choice made through gameplay: do you value saving your father's life (thereby choosing to not resolve and possibly not even understand the demon's pact), do you value your own wealth and propriety (at the likely cost of your father's life), or do you value an abstract notion of justice or goodness (similarly at the likely cost of your father's life.) It seems to fall into a similar structure as The White Lady, where you can basically choose to not care about ghosts in the ghost story game you just purchased.
@Yous0147
@Yous0147 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, life is usually these kinds of dilemmas all the time, so it seems very much real that that would be the case. However, I also agree with Errant in some way. It's pretty clear that most people playing the game would heavily prioritize saving their father over anything else, morally speaking so that would likely seem to weigh above everything else. The only thing against it would be that he is tied to your grandpa, and so the 3rd option might make you reconsider once you understand that the family has skeletons in its closets. But by and large I imagine the large majority wouldn't pick the 3rd choice because of a genuine choice, but rather as a secondary thing to try after having played the game one way before.

@@keypath4389 I'm pretty sure that you were refering to kuyang or palasik and not leak mate. You see, I was born and raised in Bali, and I'll just say that the whole subject of leak is quite a complex thing to comprehend and study in itself. For starter, "leak" is not a mere ghost or the stereotypical paranormal entities or something. Leak as a supernatural being must be understood as a certain manifestation or attainment of someone that is practicing the ancient, mystical, ( and some also say 'dark') arts of Pangleakan. Thus, the appearance of leak among us is only the causal extention of the paths of Pangleakan itself, more or less anyway in the most general sense and majority of cases. Historically, Pangleakan is one of the numerous sub-sect of the Bhairawa Tantra traditions that began to differentiate itself with the main branch over long peroid of time, while the arts of Pangleakan itself is also further divided into its own more specific schools, sub-sects, etc. with their own respective levels of proficiency and sectarian hierarchies. Thus broadly speaking, in that way, it has a pretty similar religious structure, patterns of practices as well as the social role with the Shinto traditions in Japanese society IMO.

heyy! The White Lady is also my top favorite! With Little Devil coming in second! I personally think they could do so much with Hungry Witch, if they kept the White Lady formula and mix it a little with adventurous nature of Little Devil. But I don't know why they went with cinematic, more linear story. It personally feels detached from what makes Pamali a great Horror game. Pamali is great because of White Lady, no other horror game has scared me from it's atmosphere alone but that damn one episode but they went to cheap jumpscares and the only thing I hate the most in a videogame, quick time events. Hungry Witch's trailer got me hyped but it ends up becoming the weakest episode. I hope if they are interested in making a sequel, they go back into White Lady and expand further that formula. There is nothing more scarier than the dread of the unknown and atmosphere. Thanks for the great video essay!

On top of everything else, this game has its hooks in me simply through the use of gamelan in its soundtrack. I *adore* the sound of gamelan ensembles, and particularly the slower, contemplative style of composition used here, which typically accompanies traditional theatrical performances. The way that gamelan percussion is tuned creates a kind of soft rippling effect, which in the old Javanese tradition is meant to evoke the footsteps of a god, and I think that numinous quality suits such supernatural and ritual-oriented subject matter quite well.

@@QuintaFeira12 Well, technically neither Kayako (Ju-on/The grudge) or Sadako (Ringu) are "ghost". They are more of a curse... but the ghost of a regular person should be more like "look I'm trying to cope with this eternity thing, don't bother me". You need to have that in consideration if you are trying to make the ghost somewhat antagonist for the main character. But there are games where the supernatural is... just there.

Different region have different take on folklore. I think, the Japanese horror is more on 'wrong place wrong time' kind of take, while the Southeast Asian ones are far more personal - some might even say they're targeted. I'm not sure I like these takes though, indiscriminate haunting means you're insignificant in the scheme of things, while personal means either you or your family is the source of the issue.

A lot of what you see in Japanese media is wrapped up in Shinto and Buddhist folklore. In the case of the curses, think of it more as spiritual pollution caused by a major violation of the natural order and the ghosts are afterimages. It is also possible to inflict that kind of harm on people. The Grudge (albeit Korean) was like spirit Chernobyl and everyone was walking through the reactor sarcophagus in their underwear. A lot of Japanese taboos have to do with their conception of uncleanness. The mixing of the religions into a syncretic amalgum causes some oddities. You have your angry wronged spirits from Shinto all mixed up with your wandering hungry ghosts from Buddhist reincarnation.

This was a really interesting analysis of a rather interesting game--thank you for it! ^_^ Regarding the fade-in translations, I wouldn't be surprised if it _were_ pulling the translations in from a string-source as per usual, then fading between the original text-object and the translated one. Text can be rendered in a 3D context, I do believe, so having the text appear "on the surface of" the relevant objects shouldn't be impossible. Thus the lettering needn't be a static texture, and can be dynamic text. (This, at least, is based on my experience with the game engine that I tend to use; it's plausible--although unlikely, I think--that rendering text in this way is infeasible in whichever engine the devs of Pamali used.) That said, I do really like their implementation here! As you say, I think that it helps to keep the game connected to its Indonesian roots and setting, even when effectively experienced in another language. ^_^ Regarding the endings, one of my favourites (from the first episode, at least; I forget whether it's in the others) is that you can actually just turn around and immediately leave, as I recall! ^_^

I think the variety in what they're doing here is impressive. Even if there are some missteps here or there, it's really cool that they managed to tell 4 different stories in fairly mechanically different ways in the same game. I find that desire to explore a bunch of different creative spaces instead of laser focusing on one really relatable.

back in your Fortnite video you talked about games with diametrically opposed objectives, and the third game/episode sounded like that kind of thing - the adventure game story clashing with the pawn shop story. to me (baring in mind I haven't actually played it) it sounds like a delibrate choice by the devs to add extra stakes; do you focus on getting enough to sell to save your father and leave the demon be, or do you break the curse at the risk of your father's health?

I might be missing something here, but man come on, the setting is in Sunda or West Java region isn't it?? But of course that Tuyul summoning ritual must be conducted with some Javanese incantations and not the Sundanese ones... Come on folks, please stop this kind of stereotype that everything supernatural, horror, scary and stuff must be attributed with the Javanese or Balinese culture, tradition, history, etc. I mean, the whole freaking archipelago is quite damn spooky if you ask me. Seriously, all those ghastly stories, legends, lores and practices in various parts of Kalimantan, the Nias Isle, Toraja and up to the eastern islands are just straight up brutal and nightmarish IMO. And man that particular legend about that one infernal, godforsaken isle somewhere between Riau and Natuna archipelago always give me a cold shoulder everytime I think about it. Just try to imagine if the Lovecraftian mythos and the most bone chilling of all Japanese mermaid folklores have an abomination of a child. And the mere fact that its diabolical presence through its distant silhouette and oral lores alone manage to terrorise those locals in the surrounding isles, in each and every night of their lives. Man hope I don't get some nightmares tonight...
