I Watched The Cancelled Popeye Movie.

Genndy Tartakovsky's Popeye is infamous for being axed by Sony despite universal interest in what little was shown off of the project. Now, the entire movie (in an unfinished form) is out there for anyone to see, and again, people mourn what might have been. My take is a little different.

Ugh don't get me started. It angers me that voice actors are so disrespected just so actors can be in animated movies too. It angers me that production company's act as if no one will go see 2d movies and don't even give it a chance when it's a booming industry in Japan and clearly people still like it. Even children who are used to seeing 3d animation will sit down and laugh at Looney Tunes. This art form is constantly disrespected when it's such a significant part of pop culture.

If that's Amy Pascal's best excuse, it's a goddamn lame one. There's nothing inherently wrong with the trope, there's plenty of female characters I know that are damsels in distress that are good, competent, and charming regardless if they don't know how to defend themselves, which is true in reality as not everyone is a fighter, especially women who most of them often fall back on relying on their men to be their sword and shield, which also is nothing inherently wrong with. Spoilers, but Olive was also likeable, her femininity was never compromised, and her whole arc is learning to stand up for herself and stop letting everyone in her life tell her what to do, control her, and make her own decisions, and she did this while she was on her adventures with Popeye. I know this because I also saw the leaked movie.

Fun fact: Tom Kenny is one of the few cartoon voice-actors who has a strong presence in Hollywood movies. In a lot of big executives' eyes he IS a celebrity. He played live-action roles in comedies for decades. He was chosen as the voice of Bullwinkle in the new Dreamworks short a few years ago, and was the voice of Rabbit in the 2011 Winnie-the-Pooh movie (also adding onto the 3 Spongebob movies). There is a VERY good possibility that he would've made it into the final cut of this movie too, but I do not feel good about any of the other actors in this animatic. They're definitely temp. You notice the Sea Hag has two voices, one of which is male, indicating major story edits were made since the first one's recording. Tom Kenny does NONE of Popeye's trademark laughing aside from that intro scene, and none of his mumbling either, which would have probably been saved for pick-ups set to completed animation.

Oftentimes the first voices you hear in these animatics are not actors at all, but the production team lending a voice to play out the scene. Now if they happen to have an actor onboard early, you very well may hear them in an animatic, but using a team member as a stand-in is very common practice.

Tom Kenny's vocal take on Popeye is both reminiscent of the classic voice and also something new and different, I really wished this movie came out, at least we have these leaks but man, this would've brought a new life to the fandom and also in general would've been a enjoyable movie with Tom Kenny killing it as Popeye, I'm gonna watch and review the leak myself as well because this is a huge opportunity and it's better not to miss it, and also visually this movie is a treat too, from the original teaser in it's stylized 3D look to even the storyboard art, it's just so good...how and why Sony decided to throw this away for some lousy cash in about emojis (of all things) is very questionable

I loved how Tom brings his own charm to the character since in most versions you see Popeye as grumpy with a snarl but here he looks happy and cheerful along with the fact that he doesn't have a corncob pipe and he's wearing sneakers instead of dress shoes.

The Popeye movie getting scrapped for the Emoji movie is one of the frustrating stories I ever heard and just one reason I threw away my dream of being a filmmaker: You could be an ambitious storyteller but at the end of the day, the studio execs have the final say even if they're in the wrong. If I remember correctly, Maurice LaMarche (Popeye on Popeye and Son) and Billy West (Popeye on "The Quest for Pappy"), both veteran voice actors, have both said that doing the Popeye voice was the hardest voice they've ever had to do in their careers. You can't just grab a Chris Pratt and tell him to do the part. It would've been very difficult to find a prominent celebrity to replace Tom Kenny in this.

Only other movie I know like this was the Thief and the Cobbler. Though that had years of funding production troubles and an edited film did get a commercial vhs release. The re cobbled cut with the unfinished scenes is on KZbin. Its a funny and beatiful animated film. That kind of was spitefull crushed by Disney's Aladdin.

Animatics are really entertaining and it's sad they are unseen by the general public and often deleted at the end of a production. If a studio really wanted to save money they could release a movie as an animatic with "temp" voices and I'm sure there would be an audience for it. I've had people tell me they prefer watch animatics more than a finished film because they can "see the drawings."

Couple thoughts about this unfinished movie. 1. It's pretty clear that Genndy was working on Hotel Transylvania and this at the same time. 2. Bluto has a pretty bit part in this, and I felt like they could have cut him out entirely. Since he's Popeye's main rival I felt that's disappointing. 3. The "all is lost moment" at the end of the second act was shoddy. It happens too fast and drags on for longer then it should. 4. I wish Popeyes dad played a bigger role. 5. The sleepwalking bit came out of nowhere and was never brought up again. The jokes and slapsticks are funny and the overall story and message are good too. Even with all my nitpicks if they had released it as is I would have called it a pretty decent kids movie.

The sleepwalking scene & the music was a good callback to the old cartoons since that's what happened. 0live would sleepwalk to a instrumental version of, 'Have u Ever Seen a Dream Walkin'.

What's the pilot called that you worked on exactly? Also I heard that the creator of this movie might make this movie again but with Warner Brothers instead of Sony and he would start from scratch. He would also make it with the same company who made the Cuphead cartoon (so maybe Warner Brothers will distribute the movie and the company who made the Cuphead cartoon will produce it).

I grew up on Popeyes in the early 90's. I was so confused why I never heard of this movie's release date. I see why now. Not to mention had no clue they got the creator of samurai Jack and primal to make this masterpiece and once again, Sony proves its reputation to be on par with Electronic Arts... absolute garbage

It really is a charming movie, but I think it's not really indicative of a Popeye movie. It's really weird. Bluto plays little to no role in the movie and I feel like that's a big unfortunate misstep. It's like, he's there, he's Popeye's RIVAL. USE HIM! But no, sadly he's relatively unused. If it had released, It'd have been nice, but not amazing. Always amazing to see lost media crop up though.

You killed me right here 3:07 with the SEEEN IT. I too have watched that movie, and have been a long time fan of Popeye and so has my family! My brother was the guy who painstakingly compiled a list of his powers and feats for Popeyes death battle bio. It means so much to me that we all agree that this animatic is Miles and miles above the movie that it was scrapped for.

It was great actually having some more context to Olive’s “hairy children” line - the test scene alone when she says it perfectly sets up how wonderfully neurotic she is (provided you can chalk it up to being just a random thought that popped in her head).

The goons, the jeep, I've never going to get to see this, didn't have baby sweet pea in it? The fact that I can recognize the characters from just the material that you have provided, proves that it would be a credible if not great movie. You have to wonder about the choices that modern producers make. We all know they cannot make a good fantastic four film, because they do not understand the family dynamic.... BECAUSE MODERN PRODUCERS HAVE NO IDEA WHAT A FUNCTIONING FAMILY SHOULD LOOK LIKE! They're inexperienced and incompetency kills things like this Popeye movie, because they don't understand them, they don't like them, and they want to put their own spin on something that has already beloved by fans everywhere. Maybe it's just as well it didn't come out. We all saw what they did to Lost in space, I don't believe I will ever get to see a remake of forbidden planet and a modern proper version of Robbie the robot. Maybe.... It's just as well.

One thing that I'll add to this discussion: as much as we like to bemoan the lost media aspect of this project, even if it DID get released, there's no guarantee that it would be released in the state it was in during the animatic phase. It is completely within the realm of possibility that Sony would've mandated that the crew add things that would've ruined the movie, like modern gen z references, unnecessary pop music, or shoehorned overly cute animal characters ("we gotta have something to compete with the minions!").

I remember back in 2014/15 around that time really wanting to see this with my mom, because this was one of the rare cases where I felt we shared a love of something, especially since she grew up with the show but to hear it was cancelled for the comparitively, painfully okay to bad Emoji Movie, makes me kind of sad, but I am glad it's available in some form now
