This won’t completely destroy trucking but make it better. Brokers are getting over on truckers along with trucking companies getting over on their drivers, undercutting and over saturating the market with useless office workers who seem to make more than the truckers which has always been crazy to us. The whole supply chain industry needs a restructuring and rebuilding. Not every person will make it out on the other end but that’s actually a good thing because the supply chain industry has been a mess for years. Especially with drivers. If most drivers knew they could make the same check they make now in the restaurant industry, they’d be sick to their stomach. There are far too many scammy brokers. Far too many in Trucking management who don’t do legitimate business, too many unqualified drivers as well. Things need a shaking up. Things need a change.

Look I started in 96’, long over due for some real pain. The American people, shippers & receivers can’t stand drivers either. It all needs to come crashing down and I think it very well may this time. I also believe we are going to see very soon drivers getting out by the masses. Look the bread basket of our country (Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois) the rates in these areas have already dropped. We used to say, “ when these areas fail, we are in serious trouble”, we are there now. To offer a driver/company rates that are $1.20 -$1.90 and expect them to pay tolls, scales, expenses and support their families should be criminal. Stay safe.

@@sburns2421 Good Evening, I appreciate the feedback. I'm not sure what you are referring to regarding my comment, I am assuming that you are saying or implying, "drivers should take these garbage loads and be happy." Well Look I started in 96' done a lot over the years including sales, operation to name a few, listen many of us made more in the 90's than many drivers make now, or roughly the same. Think about that for a moment, our job as professional drivers is inherently dangerous and more so today with advances in technology like the cell phone. For drivers to be offered loads that are egregiously ridiculous and well underpaid is down right criminal, the industry cannot have their cake and eat it too, what do I mean? Many companies expectations have increased over the years, the dot rules or expectations have also increased, we cannot say in one breath, "Trucking is a dangerous hard job that requires attention to detail and in the next breath say, "we will pay them inadequate wages and the driver will have to decide whether or not to pay the house bills or to fix their trucks." So not sure what you mean by your comment, I'm not worried about self driving trucks and most of us out here today will not have to worry about them either, there are many reports/studies that lay this out and have said, " if your 35-40 years of age you will be able to retire driving a truck if that is your wish. The infrastructure is not there and the economics of the self driving or electric trucks are nowhere near where they need to be. Just look at the dollars and cents to this: -$400k for an electric truck, - 500 truck fleet - $200 MILLION - Run the simple math for a company like Swift 30,000 truck fleet, ya, it's not doable to say the least. One way to fix the rate issue is to have broker transparency for rates. Why is a freight broker the only type of broker that has secret pricing. A real estate, insurance, loans etc are all required to inform of their rates. Freight broker? No. They do not need to tell the customer what they pay us. They do not need to tell us what the customer paid them. Every new regulation on the industry is for the trucker. That one change of transparency will be a huge fix.

@EfficientRVerАй бұрын
True. If the government forced a stop to the strike before it started, that would be considered union busting, before any damage was even done by a strike, favoring ports/companies over workers. The law allowing them to intervene is intended to stop major damage to the country. It is not intended to completely take away the only bargaining tool that workers/unions have, which is the right to strike. I do think that this particular union has been stupid in directly threatening to bring the country to its knees, because that is the exact situation where the government can more quickly step in and force them back to work. But even a stupid union is entitled to flex its muscle by striking for a little while, to gain some real leverage and keep some balance between employers and workers.

Anything that happens at the ports takes 30 to 60 days for it to be felt in the surface part of transportation. The timing isnt an accident, and Im not worried about the next 3 months by the time it ripples into the economy, it will be past Xmass shopping season and then we are into the winter lull of the freight market. What concerns me is it lasting into the spring and it pushes the entire economy over the cliff. Then it wont just be trucking that gets gutted.
@sburns24212 ай бұрын
IMO a far too optimistic assessment regarding the timing. Retailers are bringing in product for Christmas now, with virtually everything at least on the water or sitting in port waiting to ship. Much of this stuff is worthless if it arrives late. The timing of this could not be better or worse depending on your perspective, and the impact will be virtually immediate to the average consumer. If the media finds stories of supply-chain doom generate clicks and traffic, all will be reporting on it within a few days. People start Christmas shopping early to ensure they can get things, which causes a run on numerous products. Many in the public will be shocked and confused when "some guys that unload ships" cripple the entire US economy within a couple of weeks.

No hired drivers- only my business partners at this time. But before- 75 cpm on all miles, tarps paid, layover paid. Yes, even in this market.

How are flatbeds going to get inside the Ports? They're going to lock the gates. There isn't going to be anyone there to load them up if they we allowed to enter...

Nobody are you kidding me if we don’t have people driving the trucks to the stores so I can unload them so I can put the shit on the shelf so you can fucking buy it. I don’t have a job. There’s always shit. I can do always backstock work, but there’s only so much backstock if I run out of that I’m fucked

Ilwu also can't actually strike since they are in contract, but they can refuse to work diverted ships. That's what they will be doing to enforce the east strike

Let’s get ready LA/LB!!! we have three automated ports, and if the longshoreman in the West Coast decide to do that sympathy strike, they will be shooting themselves in the foot. Gene Seroka and Mario Cordero, who are the chief executive officer of Los Angeles and Long Beach,, were already very vocal that they did not want the union in the terminals and accuse them of intentionally slowing down operations. Which is true.. our busiest terminals are the automated ones out here in the West Coast.

I have belonged to IBEW for 30 years and OPA (Ohio Patrolman’s Association) for 24 years so far, meaning. We all have to work together for all of us to be able to survive. I have never been on a strike in 54 years, and have excepted from 2.5 to 3 % increases as not to loose my job and not cripple other work forces. This longshore union president interviewed is hell bent on crippling the American way of life if his demands are not meet. The union wants 70 to 75 % increase, now making $200,000 a year and the company offered 25% increase. You judge who is trying and who are not trying to settle

The best way to attract sharks is to chum the waters. Technically, it will affect the east, southern, and west coast ports. Two unions are all in at the poker table. Bluff or not? You decide.

The problem is that not every job at the port is union? The guys that run the cranes the off load the ship are union but, the guys that store and stack the containers on the yard are not??

All labor at out port is union. From the crane operators, to the container repairmen.

Hi Miranda! 🫡 Have you ever seen the amount of ants on dropped food at a food event? Thats what i see in the foreseeable future if a strike takes place, and if the ports shut down. Sure they will offer good rates to move the loads, but the congestion that it will bring to the area ( truck stops, rest stops, on/ off ramps, highways....etc) you can only have so many trucks in the port to function effectively/ efficiently. Even if they add more transporter cranes to move containers, the entry to every port/ yard will have lines backed up for miles. So while some might see this opportunity as a gold rush moment, i think differently. A food truck at the ports would be better time/ investment in my opinion!
