Highway is out of control. If you don't have an ELD with API (so that they can gain access), the only other option is to provide them with PROPRIETARY information such as a copy of your truck's loan agreement, your truck's title, and your driver's license. They literally want people to upload that information into their database. This seems illegal. I refuse to buy a new ELD (just so they can gain access) or provide them with my personal information, so I'm now cut off from 30+ brokers that I've done business with since 2015. If you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything!

When I started this biz almost 11 years ago, I routinely booked flatbeds or step decks for $2-2.25 a mile. Vans were cheaper, sometimes as little as a $1-1.10/mile when rates were stupid low or coming out of Florida. Depending on the lane, flatbeds/steps are still at the $2-$2.25 mile rate but expenses have more than doubled in some cases. That's not sustainable.

I get called to run a load , I don’t have to sit on the load board hounding worthless brokers who are crooks anyway … Am I getting the most or best rate per mile ? No, probably not but I’m home almost every night and have peace of mind and my only expense is my truck maintenance next to fuel of course because all the other expenses like insurance , dispatch , e logs , trailer … etc are almost non existent. I figured that out in 2009 and sold my truck and went back to LTL running local at first then moved to Line Haul. Getting a raise in 2025 to 93 cents per mile for running team on a W2. The company had to match Old Dominion's new pay scale to keep from losing drivers. BTW Old Dominion will probably make over $1.2 Billion in profit for 2024. The reason why I never had any Problems......... Let me say that again guys, The reason why i never had any problems is because i only pulled loads in a Truckers Market. A truckers market means the shippers and brokers are in a mad scramble to find a truck due to a truck shortage. In these times they bend over for me. So let me unpack all this, We have a supply and demand industry. Supply swings from truckers market to shippers market back and forth every few years. We have been in a shippers market for sum 4yrs now and it has bankrupted most of the truckers that did not park the truck 2yrs ago. My point is guys...... We have the power, when this supply thing swings the other direction, it is my opinion that when that day comes and the truck shortage is here we should all be charging so much money per load that we can all pay everything off with ONE LOAD .......... lol ........... Just my little old opinion.

If you have no payment you probably have a truck that’s a little older with more miles that will need more maintenance the only difference is that you can pick and choose your loads a little more because the bank won’t be coming for your truck if you skip a few loads.

I think we are also dealing with over capacity in the broker space. They are bidding for these loads against each other. This is driving down the available rates remaining for the carriers. The smaller brokerages are losing more loads, so they are taking a larger cut on remaining loads; further driving rates lower. Another issue in this broken industry is the over capacity problem in the mega carriers. They also greatly expanded their fleets during the high. It cost them less to keep a driver in that truck running loads than to have it sit. Reason mega carriers are now redeploying trucks to the spot market. I would think they are at a much lower cpm than say an o/o, small fleet, or an independent carrier. This is due to cost savings achieved through scale. On a side note, i believe your partner is correct, but it is only one part of the capacity problem. Another potential reason is all the government loans given out during the pandemic. I would also add that all the fraud is also allowing a fair amount of carriers to stay alfoat. It would also be foolish not to admit that there is some amount of trucks hauling loads that have no insurance and are being driven by drivers that do not have a CDL. Let's be honest with ourselves. Better vetting by brokers is not necessarily a bad thing. Will weed out a lot of the bad actors. Unfortunately, it also can have a negative impact on honest ones. All of that without even going into the carriers taking cheap freight or new to the country people that see the gross and think that is more money than i ever made in the country i came from. These are usually the people who dont know their cpm and also probably the majority of the carriers that are accepting the cheap freight. Not dogging anything you said, just trying to add to what you said some more things to consider.

I agree with your overall assessment in what is going in the industry. However I am in my fourth decade working in trucking. Mostly O/O since 1995. Been through at least 4 economic and probably more freight recessions. In trucking you simply have to be always prepared for extreme lows and highs in both freight supply and rates. And with very low barriers set for anyone that wants to enter the industry, this will always be a problem for us. Nevertheless if you find good stable carrier to lease or contract for, you can make a good living. I will retire comfortably in 2025 when I turn 60. Cheers and good luck with the channel.

The one thing I was struggling with in this industry for years now is a lack of reputation institute. You can be the sweetest carrier, delivering on time, always tracking, sending POD seconds after delivery, have perfect safety score, providing excellent customer service in general. BUT, nobody cares. And you will not get a load if another carrier bids $10 less. There are some exceptions with some brokers but mostly it's true. And Go Highway is a pure reflection of it. For brokers we are just a MC number. The reason so many brokers got go Highway is that it gives them a way to filter carrier based on their requirements even if their requirements don't make any sense. But let's be strong, payback is coming...

Broker gets their hands on load first!! They take whatever they want off of it.. some Ahole will haul it for dirt cheap.. an easy fix is to regulate them to 10% of the load!!!!

Yes but you must also have transparency from the brokers, proof is better than taking them at their word!

I to wanted my own authority at one point but decided to partner with Landstar! After learning how much insurance would cost and only a handful of brokers would work with me for the first one to three years and all the headaches of having your own authority….thanks but no thanks! I am good!

😂😂😂😂😂😂 When I said what you are saying, I get canceled, people get upset , some people think I’m very rude 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I can’t blame them, I get upset and frustrated and my vocabulary shows it . Miranda , this trucking business is not set up for someone with 2 or more trucks , it is not set up for lease drivers, lease purchase drivers , it is not set up for renters . You want to be in this business , you either drive for a good paying company with all your benefits OR you become 100% independent O/O and you drive it , period ! If you do what those suckers are doing holding their breath ( paying equipment /drivers) they are going to end up in bankruptcy. Because no one can compete with big companies and corporations. Brokers know that if your MC shows more than 1 truck , they know that you have not choice other than accept their rates . So, do we want to kill this industry or do we want to fight back and keep it for the truckers ???? It is up to you US .

To much fraud, to much imbalance. Impossible to compete at a good price. That simple. Something needs to change.

I just read that there were 3.1m registered combination vehicles in 2021. 3.3 million registered combination vehicles in 2022 and there is 3.4 million registered combination vehicles as of today.... No wonder rates aren't going up. We are getting a surplus of a trucks in the industry even in this market XD

This is why long term in trucking need enough trucks to do contract freight. Or fewer trucks and broker as well. The money is in the control of the freight.

Highway is really getting out of control. They're trying to force carriers to give them access to anything they want if you as carrier want to book a load. Horrible.

I have been an operator with my own authority since 1999 no claims almost always early for pick and drops truck does not require elds highway now requires me to give a copy of my license registration loan agreement and a copy of my title I lost 3 loads last week because of this crap almost 50 years of being an operator so parked my reefer and dedicated to a carrier 😢

It's a broker market and they are smart they sticking together and making all the systems and laws to their favor so when the market flips on truckers' favor they gonna be in good shape .but on the other hand, truckers, specifically owner ops are always really busy fitting with echather and lost basic toch with reality and forgetting to support and try to find a solution to this by getting together and build a system the gets this broker a run for the money. This truckers the just care abut who's got the most frisking shining and the most beautiful and expensive equipment and they look down on others is what got us to this point divided and conquer.. so keep playing the game of market own your own and it gonna take twice more .. let's stick together people.

The market is correcting. carriers are not supposed to survive. That’s the point. the market is going to make people leave trucking completely until we get capacity to normal level.
