Spiritual Unfoldment with John Butler

Spiritual Unfoldment with John Butler

4 жыл бұрын

In this conversation, John answers the question "Does silence heal?" With beguiling candour, he addresses our deep need for healing, with our desire for peace and wholeness. Then, referring solely to his own experience in trying to 'Make the world a better place', he offers an answer to the question "How do we make peace with what takes our peace away?" As usual, his starting point is stillness, from which, where does silence, or space, or freedom, or peace, or God begin and end? There's nothing wrong with this creation - expect 'me' in 'my' absence from God. Isn't everything that dies out or fails, the consequence?
Recorded: Somewhere in Portugal, 2 February, 2020

Your old school wisdom..and even how you look reminds me of my old dad. He was born in 1907..so was very similar to johns out look in life. I miss him so much. I trust in a God to look after me when I die and bring me back again. Maybe we are on a infinite loop...we die ,we relive that same life again...who knows, but I trust in him.

To interrupt peacefulness, with irrelevant noise, is to insult the wisest of all teachers. In order to learn anything we must pay attention, whether that is digesting wisdom, via the well informed, or feasting upon the sanctity of silence. I love listening to John. I am always moved by the careful consideration of what he says, without any of it being contrived or overthought. He is a wonderfully natural teacher. I am sincerely thankful for John and all his videos. His book " Wonders Of Spiritual Unfoldment " - is a real treasure.

On a lighter note, when I saw the microphone cord attached to John's shirt, I was thinking how ridiculous it is for us to try to hold on to something or someone so brilliant, the luminosity of his very being. How do I make peace with that which takes my peace away?" Byron katie and many illumined teachers have said. its not the situation or circumstances which takes the peace away. its out own resistance that causes suffering also. its the unquestioned thoughts and beliefs that take our peace away. finding ways to let go of the resistance and contractions to "what is" results in immediate peace

19.30 - ‘We fall from paradise.....’ John describes this moment to moment transition of state many times in his writings. Here’s one example which has been resonating frequently for me: ‘What then of imperfection? How does it arise? One thing’s for sure - it starts with separate “me”. The very question brings it into being. Watch how it works. Following that train of thought, we spawn a brood of mischief - enticing us to doubt, divisiveness, and loss of what I’ve just described - Oneself. Thus, we fall, and become the foundation of our fallen world. I see it in myself - I do it still. I look into darkness, and believe what I can’t see. I sink into forgetfulness - lost, contrary, shadow self - other, ego “me”. Such worldly wisdom is foolishness.....[…].....It’s best avoided.’ Possibly the most counter cultural message to encounter in an environment imbued with social media and scaffolded with deference to technocracy and the supremacy of Experts. Great turn of phrase; ‘we spawn a brood of mischief’ and we’re encouraged, even conditioned to do so. When, inevitably, that brooding becomes externalized - well, the fruits are there to see, but not easy to recognize.

I have to say, I have been watching a few of John's videos the last few days, and I don't think I have seeing him with as much energy as I have in this one, especially at 0:54. Compared to his usual style and presentations, it's like a completely different person has entered his body. Whether it is the setting, or the interviewer, or the question itself I don't know, but there is much more animation there, and I really like it. I know some people are fond of his usual plodding and meandering style, and I will admit it certainly has it's qualities for relaxation or result, but in this particular moment he was eminently more listenable. Kind of makes me wonder whether what's going on the rest of the time is natural, or an intentional practiced "detached" affection.

It's fairly easy for someone who has lived a full life without terminal health issues to describe how easy it is to let go of physical ailments. But what about those who have terminal illness that can be cured by that "limited knowledge" that he speaks of? Are we to sit back and just accept the simplest preventable illnesses from taking us from this earth? He doesn't really go into a deeper answer to that. Also to answer his question, why can't we all just go to school to learn the one lesson of glory. Because if we all did that we would no longer exist. We can't all sit around and bask in sedentarianism. Even in our most barbaric state, there have to be those that hunt and scavenge for food, that lead those that do and those that build homes and provide protection from other dangers. Every animal species on the planet operates this way. The human species is no different. There is, after all, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Are to believe this is pointless? The answer to existence can't be that to be human is to be a plant.

uh sir, I think you someone forgot to mention eternal life here. The man is in his 80s. He isn`t telling anyone to be old and white haired like he is. He isn`t telling anyone to be lazy. He is stating a fact. In the beginning God created the Fermament of heaven and the earth. Then he created animals and birds and gave the man dominion over them. To care for them and to hunt and eat them. Peter had the vision of the blanket coming down from heaven filled with all manner of creeping things and all beasts unclean and unfit. And in that God was declaring all animals to be fair game. They cannot make anyone impure. So what you are saying about our barbaric state is not barbaric at all. And there is healing and miracles. Loneliness, isolation and the feeling of abandonment leads to illness and if sin enters into it, death. The Lord offers us life more abundant and eternal. Live or die. The lord offers the choice of death or life and says Choose Life. This man is totally correct in his letting go advice. I was just about a dead man at one point when I was 23. One night in a drunken state I gave up and at that very moment I literally saw the light. Giving up to God is the smartest thing a man or woman can do. You just have to trust that if you want any peace.

You are doing a marvellous thing for your listeners with these talks but it always bothers me a bit when you discount your work as a younger man with environmental projects and farming. All of your work has been motivated by a deep compassion which is so beautiful. Yes, the work you are doing now may be more valuable in the grand scheme of things but what you did to "try and save the world" was still wonderful and driven by love which is you shining your light.
