"If your silence is taken for ignorance, but it doesn't upset you--well, that's the real sign that you have begun to be a philosopher." - Epictetus (AD 55 - 135) Great video, John and Phil! ❤️
@robin-vt1qj3 жыл бұрын
Interesting. How could those two be related like that?
@Avisado3 жыл бұрын
@@robin-vt1qj There is an infinite correlation in the infinite universe. In the underlying substratum (the center of the core of our being and all life) there is the "One without a 2nd". All misery comes from the perception of duality, being separate from anything or anyone. Especially the creative intelligence, you may call God. Only the egoic mind and concepts see separation. That is the root cause of all misery, wars, anything less than Bliss.
@robin-vt1qj3 жыл бұрын
@@Avisado I mean how is being unfairly judged bv you're being too silent a sign of a good philosopher? Are good philosophers too silent?
@Avisado3 жыл бұрын
@@robin-vt1qj According to Ramana Marharshi and several others Reality / Truth cannot be taught by words. Many saints have taken silence as that is their inner state of Being. It's our natural state but there is an epidemic of thoughts, discussions, gaining more "knowledge" (head stuff). The egoic mind got us into this mess. Desires, pleasures, pain, suffering, rinse and repeat for millions of years. It's all a dream if it didn't last for eternity. Some say our True Self is "pure primordial unconditioned, non judgmental Awareness"... It has to be cultivated however as around age 2 - 3 we became convinced that we were separate from the whole of life and the universe. That's where the ego came in and going forward from there we identify with a "conceptionalized" contrived self, transient, mortal and temporary. No wonder there is so much anxiety and unrest in the world. we are way out of sync with nature and completely overlooked our True Eternal Self.
@FrogmortonHotchkiss2 жыл бұрын
@@robin-vt1qj I will have a go at answering this. These days, we think of a philosopher as someone who excels intellectually. But back then, the goal was peace, or 'ataraxia'. One who is at peace will rest comfortably in silence in between thoughts. The mind has no urge to churn and keep itself busy. This may be mistaken for mental poverty rather than spiritual wealth. One who is at peace will not be on the defensive about this mistaken perception whereas most people hate to appear ignorant or stupid and resent anyone looking down on them. With reference to philosophy's ancient aim of peace, Epictetus says that the good philosopher rests at peace and isn't bothered by others' foolish judgements. John conforms to these ancient standards.

I am still working things out, And struggling to work things out, but something John said in this video clicked, And my interpretation is that “Spirit is like the water in the ocean, in the ocean it is all one in the same, you can’t tell where water starts and ends amongst a sea. Then we turn away from god and we are sucked up and away, and dumped down on earth, we are then absorbed by the earth, and we then eventually make our way back to the ocean after being through our trials and tribulations and twists and turns of what the earth throws at us”.

Hey John! I’ve been watching your videos for a while now, and they’ve helped me stay close to God. Alas, as guaranteed, I’ve hit a pretty big roadblock in the journey of life. Thus, I offer to you a story. I’ve been spending many hours of my free time thinking. That’s how I battle my doubts, and if I fail I turn to faith. But recently, I seem to be so contemplative about everything (life included) that it’s giving me anxiety. Sometimes I fear that I’ll never wake up if I fall asleep. It’s gotten to the point where I’ve lost all energy, and despair looms before me. I’m only 18 and just started college- the next few decisions I make determine the outcome of my entire life. But watching this video has really helped me understand I’m not the only one who’s suffered; evil has fooled me into thinking I’m alone. Behold, a flicker of hope, though the battle won’t be easy. I’m planning on making meditation a habit now, and I hope to get some stability in my life once again. As you’ve always said: feet on the ground. It’s unfathomable how much of an impact your inspiring words have on others! I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your wisdom!
@alysong55683 жыл бұрын
One weight to take off your shoulders. While the decisions you make in college certainly influence your immediate path, they hardly determine the outcome of your life. You hardly know yourself at such an age, and you have such limited context of world and circumstance, that to think your life outcome hinges upon these next few years and the choices therein is the path of anxiety and madness. It is a vector only. It can be changed, it can be reexamined, it can be molded and remolded. All it requires is curiosity, an openess to accept that some things you choose will not be beneficial for you and that it is ok to let those things go that do not serve you or God in a beneficial way. The people who find themselves the most fulfilled in life often have the most up and down, backward and forward, topsy turvy path in life. Their finish line often hardly resembling their start. All it requires is the desire to keep putting one foot in front of the other, to refuse the fear in you that demands you lay in stagnation for fear of making a wrong move. To feel the fear and anxiety that this world is primed to deliver, and instead of falling in front of it, but allowing yourself to acknowledge it and move through it, is perhaps one of the greatest skills you can cultivate in yourself. As the line from a great book, Dune, goes: "Fear is the mind killer. It is the little death." So fret not. Breathe in and feel the singularity of your being in that breath. Let it ground you, and know that the awareness of what you are far exceeds the boundaries and trappings of this modern world.
