Some corrections to this video: 1) "Omega First & Swatch Second" I should've emphasised "with regards to Design Contribution". This is a Swatch watch but all the design groundwork was done by Omega, that's what I was trying to put across. 2) The watch case is Injection Moulded. 3) It doesn't have a 12-hour totaliser on the dial, it's a 1/10th of a second counter. 4) I'm sure there will be more to add 😉

Well said @Benjamin Chapman. I was wondering how many 'enthusiasts to be' will buy this watch only to swing back around in 10-15 yrs and buy a Speedmaster as a first luxury piece as a result. Many of us in the hobby end up swinging back around ourselves to re-buy our first watch and even though the Speedie seems to have lost its first 'real' watch appeal, I agree that this release will keep the watch relevant. This exercise will pay off for both brands.

As a plastics engineer, who is also currently holding a Moonswatch, this is definitely injection molded. I've also analyzed the bioceramic material of another Swatch - it's a simply compounded polyamide material with ceramic filler. The PA material is partially derived from castor oil feedstocks and it's not biodegradable. It feels and looks like any other plastic; I wouldn't say it's very special, but it is a unique custom compound. Another Swatch I've looked at also had a case that appeared spun welded or ultrasonic welded top and bottom case, along with the plastic window. Very well thought out construction. I'm curious about the construction of my Mission to Neptune, but I'm just going to wear it. :)

I thinking there is a growing misconception that these watches are for people that can't afford a Speedmaster but desire one. I'm now the owner of a "Mars" Moonswatch. With that being said, I have a nice collection of high end watches and wanted the Moonswatch to add to it. While waiting in line I was actually surprised by the amount of fellow watch enthusiasts who were there for the same reason as myself. I saw many Rolex's on wrists as well as a few AP's. I think that we all understood that we were buying a plastic Swatch watch and just thought it would be cool to have. It was a memorable experience to say the least.

“Gateway drugs into the hobby.” Bingo! My thoughts exactly. It’s fun and will bring more people into the hobby and to Omega specifically! I don’t own a speedy (but I plan to eventually) and a Moonswatch will give me a little taste of a speedy until then. The subtle references to Speedy history are also fun and it enables more people to get into some speedy history they never would have been able to otherwise.

Relatedly, I probably have a special fondness for this release because of what ultimate benefits “fashion watches” I believe have had on the hobby as a whole. I knew nothing about watches from a technical or collectible standpoint years ago. But I always appreciated the look of a gentleman wearing an attractive looking watch (pure aesthetics), so I started with fashion watches. Over time, I came to learn more about proper watches and my tastes and interests changed. What’s clear is that but-for the existence of mass-marketed fashion watches, I likely wouldn’t be enjoying the hobby today.

I am not personally aware of any data that supports this, but I am hard pressed to believe that this isn’t the case. It seems like mechanical watches have only gotten more popular over recent years as evidenced by the explosion of micro brands and watch Instagram and KZbin . 6:25 I believe the watch might be too cutting edge for your worries about disposability. It would be a great thing if this watch would change the mindsets about how we see plastic as a disposable fabric. In a sense normal plastics are one of the most unsuitable fabrics to regard as disposable since they degrade so terribly. We should give plastics way more credit for their attributes of shock resistance, toughness and scratch resistance, weight and so on. We should fearfully respect it’s ageing qualities as well. Let’s use this great fabric wisely, instead of dumping it everywhere.

I had the coax Speemaster back in 1997. I paid $1k for a limited edition dial. I passed on the Schumacher and CART variants. I never upgraded to the mechanical Moon Watch because I thought the money would be better saved towards the Submariner I picked up a couple years later. I sold the Sub nearly as fast I had it because I had high flying stocks to buy like Amazon at $100 per share (now worth $3K per share or $3 million I can't remember which). Just 10 years earlier my first watch was a Swatch Watch Pinstripe and a true watch enthusiasts I added a second the Follow Me with the LeMans inspired super luxurious rubber strap. Well I never did go back to the Moon Watch or any Omega for that matter because I frankly think they're overpiced like Rolex. These mass produced movements are not grand complications of high horology. They're just Swiss luxury totems. But at least Omega have an in-house movement heritage. Actually think about it... Swatch have more of in-house movement history than Rolex (they didn't make any of their own movements until they bought the wholly distinct Aegler entity until early 2000's. Swatch were already 2 decades into making their own movements by the time upstart Rolex tried to get in on that movement making game. LOL. But now that I can afford to buy any watch I want within reason (granted an absurd concept in the watch racket now) I can't justify the now $7K USD for a Moon Watch. Laboriously built movement that produced mediocre accuracy with a sterile dial and has to be manually wound like a pocket watch from the middle ages? Let me sleep on that Hans.... Ah...so satisfying that feeling of a $7k lighter wallet to enjoy the supple turn of gear. Or maybe I just change the dial on my Samsung Galaxy 4 Classic 46mm to Speedy dial that I donwloaded off a website that Omega tried to shut down but not before some Estonian guy copied it to all the watch dial blogs. Hats off to the marketing department at Swatch. Mega win for my home team.

I see this as less of an Omega release and more of a Swatch Group release. The Swatch Group is milking their best known luxury brand. Perhaps a bit like how Disney did / does with Star Wars. I wonder what the Omega people think about this move behind closed doors. I’m not hating on the concept, btw. I think this is a daring and creative release. As far as the designs go, I would have not done the black version (or the Mercury one). Doing just the colorful ones would have made the release a bit more swatch and avoid any confusion with the real Speedy. Kind of how a brand called Toy Watch used to do brightly colored plastic “Submariners” - nobody would confuse that for a Rolex, yet it’s clear what iconic watch it refers to.

Why if you don't abuse it, it probably will last a few years probably through one battery change by then at $250. It doesn't owe you anything and you will have had fun with it.

I bet you will bored of the watch long before it breaks. Quartz watches generally a tough as and will last ages. A previous Swatch chronograph owner said his watch is still going after 20 years.

Great video and points.. however I think us as the luxury watch enthusiasts are looking at this release a little too myopically... There are Swatch collectors out there that are not horology nuts, who don't care about the FOIS, or a Red Submariner... they simply saw an incredibly different Swatch design and collab.. so they jumped at it. I'd even say that most of the people that lined up at Swatch boutiques were exactly that, Swatch collectors. I saw a comment on Reddit from a former swatch boutique manager and they stated that Swatch collectors are likely the biggest group of collectors showing up for this release. Do i want one? Yes, but my opinion could change once seeing it in the "flesh"

I like the idea of a collaboration between Omega and Swatch, the short-term upside for Swatch is clear. The upside for Omega is not so clear. The long-term impact of the Moon Watch brand identity is unknown, they have risked damaging the reputation of one of their icons for little upside. I hope that this is not the case, but the risk is real. Hard to see how this will increase sales of the Omega Speedmaster. The one thing this exercise proves is that the Moon watch Brand was a strong brand, which is clearly why Swatch wanted to use it. I can't help but wonder what the collaboration with Swatch would look like had it been based something from the Omega catalogue that was not so iconic? For example, Globemaster, a collaboration with swatch could be used to raise the profile of that collection while still being desirable as a swatch relying on the Omega name. While it is hard to see anybody walking into an Omega boutique asking for a Speedmaster because of the Moon Swatch, people might ask "what is a Globe master?" because so many have never heard of it before. That to me could be a true win for both brands.

I actually like the design of the Omega X Swatch better than the original. The spacing out of the subdials and Speedmaster text in the middle just seems very balance. I also think the design of The Mission to Mars is nicer than the Alaska project, again, better symmetry. Absolutely way more positives to this collaboration than negative.

I basically agree with everything you said here. There are folks hating on this watch, but I definitely think that Omega and Swatch have pulled it off. But not without a hitch, referring to the in store release. I think they should have anticipated the boutique disaster, and simultaneously released it online, thereby eliminating the flipper appeal. Know that I live only 35 minutes from the Pennsylvania release site. Yet I had no desire to fight the crowd to get one, especially knowing it was not a limited edition, and would be available online in the near future. But, I'm 68 years old, and I come from a generation where everything was not instant. Hence, you learn what patience is!

Swatch said it is not limited edition. But they did NOT say it would be available online. In fact, they said more would be available at select stores - which sounds like the only place to get them are a still only going to be at the stores chosen for the release

Wow what a completely different video with a different slant / take on the whole subject! 👏👏 However ppl keep talking about The Gateway to Omega purchasing one of these OmegaSmoon watches but knowbody has ever mentioned the POSSIBLE downside to it though? Let me explain my holy grail watch was once the Blue Omega Seamaster 300m so in 2019 I eventually bought one and yes approx 18 months later the novelty wore off so I sold it. I'm personally not in the market for a Speedy (if I was to get another Omega it would probably be the Planet Ocean?) But anyway I would love to get my hands on a Mission To The Moon model as for 250 bucks it's a no brainer! But my whole point is because these new OmegaSwatch watches are more or less so identical in looks and dimensions etc to the real deal Speedys especially the Moon variant would you really want to go from 250 bucks to 5K+ to basically have the same / similar styled watch on your wrist that you already own? Yes of course the bigger brother from Omega has all the top bells and whistles mechanical movements etc, etc but at the end of the day the reason I want a Moon watch is because it's the nearest looking to its original counterpart and that's my whole point.

Another gem video. Whether it is 3/4 Omega and 1/4 Swatch, it remains a Swatch. I have to say though, it is the best damned looking Swatch I have ever seen. The sheer interest from the watch community in this collaboration proves it will be a success. Think of it this way maybe, did the Swatch Group release this as a means to eclipse Watches and Wonders that starts this week?

Excellent analysis - personally I love the idea of making this design accessible. That said, I have to differ slightly with your idea against creating disposable products. I believe that lifecycle and recycling need to become a more considered part of the product design process, given the state of the world and how things like plastic have really put our environment in a bad place. Making things last absolutely addresses that, but that’s not a reason for us not to consider making products safer to dispose of at lower price points. Just to note though - bioceramic, while great because it doesn’t use oil, is still not a pure material and I’m not fully aware if it is biodegradable/recyclable. Bio plastics are also not a solution with the current food shortage in the world, as at times they can cut into our food sources. Random rant over, but as always, enjoyed you sharing your thoughtful perspective on this!

I see very few downsides to the MoonSwatch at all. This watch is going to get more young people’s feet in the door of watch ownership, and they are the life blood necessary for this hobby to survive. Even my mother wants one, and she doesn’t even wear a watch. I’ll be getting one in not-too-distant future, and one for her too if I can. These cynical investors complaining about the MoonSwatch hurting their Omega’s equity and resale value need to take their ball, go home and find another hobby, because we don’t need them. We need the new enthusiasts, otherwise owning watches just becomes a business.

I really wish the seconds ran smooth and not dead-beat. However, I realize that would likely have raised the price, and the point is to keep it low. I don’t think this watch will hurt Omega. Seiko makes everything from the super high end Grand Seiko to the everyday field watches and they do just fine. People should realize that Omega is not compromising on quality. They are simply addressing a market they have previously ignored.

Hi IDGuy, I’ve followed your channel for several years but this time I’m not in line with your conclusions. Frankly I don’t understand where the watch industry is heading, especially Omega with their current release. As an owner of several Constellation, Seamaster and 321 Speedmaster watches I’m questioning why Omega is diluting their brand name. Frankly speaking, as a senior watch collector I respect the brand for there historical achievements but this time in collaboration with Swatch, a total disaster……I believe Rolex, PP, AP and the other reputable brands are just laughing, I’m almost sure I will never see a battery driven Daytona at my Rolex AD shop in a near future.
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
Good point here Frankie. I think at the end of it all when we boil it down, Omega didn't have much of a say in the matter. Swatch gave them the break-down and made them come up with a game plan to get to work. The best that Omega could do was justify that producing these will bring more people to their stores in the future (which I believe will be the case) - these could represent a "try before you buy experience" for many. I remember getting my first Nokia 7110 as a "dummy" before buying the phone and that was my gateway. From the feedback I've been seeing, those who've never considered owning / wearing a watch (others who've only ever bought fashion watches) are looking at these with excitement. I also just think about my generation and the younger years. This offers a somewhat "fresh" take on a model that we stuffy enthusiasts have always touted as great. It can definitely be viewed through two lenses thought and I think the discourse is the reason why there has been SUCH an influx of interest and disdain. In the case of the Swatch Group, their motto could be seen as something like: "Why restrict amounts and charge more where we can increase amounts and charge less?" 🥃
@namelessrace98032 жыл бұрын
@@ID-Guy imo, this had the effect of why by a Speedmaster for more when we can buy it for less--because, as mentioned, with all the other gazillion speedy variations, it is no longer an aspirational luxury watch one would want to save to buy.
