The Marvel Phase Four Announcement at San Diego Comic Con was...a lot. We got information about eleven new shows and movies some of which we didn't even know existed before the panel.
And yet, many people had concerns about the announcement and what it meant for Phase Four I believe if you take a closer look at some of those concerns, you discover that there is more to be excited about from Phase Four than meets the eye.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't The Celestials, the creators of The Eternals, first appeared in GOTG 1 before they appeared in ANY Marvel movie? Also, I seem to recall that the First Thor movie featured The Destroyer. In the Thor comics, it was an animated suit of armor that Odin created to wield a weapon called The Odinsword should The Celestials appear on Earth again to evaluate their "creations" and wish to "reevaluate" their decision and destroy them. Maybe Thor Odinson or Lady Thor will do what Odin couldn't since he died in "Thor Ragnarok" and set the stage for "Thor 5 - Ragnarok II!" Just a thought.

This phase of the MCU seems more like a palette cleanser than anything else. In the comics when they finished a big storyline, they'd have a handful of one-off or filler stories just to give the readers some breathing room before the next epic. I feel that's what they're doing here. There likely isn't any grand plan save for making fun movies and earning all the money. Also, I'm tempted to call this phase "Journey Into Mystery" (after the anthology comic where Thor first appeared) because it seems that Marvel is delving into the more weird and unusual corners of their movie universe.

maybe this phase is lowering our expectations? instead of constantly building and building and building up the power levels of characters and the stakes, they're gonna lower them through this phase. then we can restart with assembling a new team of avengers, setting up new villains with lower stakes, then build again, then restart, etc.

Even the color palette makes sense now if you look up which MCU entry is colorful. The muted color movies are all set on earth. All the cosmic movies are almost psychedelic. GotG, Thor, esp when they head to Thor: Ragnarok. It's all planned. Trust the Fiege. Black Widow is tellingly not part of phase 3, but phase 4, despite being likely to be a prequel. They used her to set up the Winter Soldier before so it's possible they will let her introduce a major villain.

Honestly, I would argue Phase Two wasn't really leading to Ultron either. He wasn't set up ahead, Tony wasn't thinking about building this bot during his movie, it all just kinda... happened... in a very rushed first hour. HYDRA is a bigger thread, but even that only treads two movies (Winter Soldier and Ultron). The bigger arc was that all of them reacted to the events of The Avengers: Tony with his PTSD, Thor with his brother issues, Cap with SHIELD, Ultron with preparing for the next big invasion. But it wasn't specifically leading anywhere - they didn't even introduce the new characters for Ultron until Ultron (unless you count that one post-credits scene).

I think you are right. The MCU shouldn't immediately go after the next Thanos-level-villain. Conflicts don't need to be potentially universe-ending to matter. If it comes up naturally, go for it, but otherwise, let the remaining characters do their own things for a while.

I'm surprised you didn't mention House of M. A story where Wanda loses control of her powers and shatters reality after she loses Vision and the family they built together? WandaVision is probably going to be about Wanda somehow bringing Vision back (likely using her reality manipulation powers) and building a family together. WandaVision will lead into Multiverse of Madness. Wanda will play a prominent role in Multiverse of Madness. But uh... no mention of Vision in Multiverse of Madness? Gee. One might think that maybe, perhaps, something bad happens to him at the end of WandaVision. Something that causes Wanda to have a breakdown - like losing him for the second time would. Something that leads into Multiverse of Madness. And gosh, would you look at that alliteration in "Multiverse of Madness"? Dropping the coy act, basically I think at the end of WandaVision, Wanda's gonna lose Vision, and also their children if they have some. (Yes, they had children in the comics, but they weren't... you know what, let's just say it's comic book complicated and leave it at that.) Anyway, Wanda snaps, shatters reality, and is kind of the unintentional antagonist in Multiverse of Madness. Obviously a lot will have to change from the original story since, you know, no X-Men. But the general concept of Wanda creating an alternate reality where she's happy would stay - and also be an opportunity to bring back Quicksilver, even if only for one movie. And of course if they want to bring mutants into the MCU, could you think of a cooler way to do so than ending this movie with basically a reverse of the "No more mutants" moment? Honestly I'm half expecting them to pull a switcheroo with Doctor Strange's subtitle closer to release and just straight up call it House of M.

That's all great and all, but in MCU Wanda's powers come from the mind stone and involve mind control and precise, powerful telekinesis, and not reality warping. It'd kind of come out of nowhere. Unless they make some retcon and, say, claim that her powers were somehow influenced by the reality stone during the dark world and that's why it gives a red glow. Okay, actually, nevermind, they could pull it off.

He makes origins relatively simple and convenient. Also, the X-Men have years of history so introducing them through the multiverse or an alternate reality doesn't really make sense. My theory is that they will be inspired by the brand new comics by Jonathan Hickman (House of X/Powers of X) in which the X-Men live on an isolated island-nation called Krakoa.

The movie version of GotG was far LESS established than Eternals. Eternals have been around since 1975. The movie version of GotG was established in the 2012 Marvel Now series. The original GotG team of Astro, Martinex, Charlie 27, etc was established in 1968 but that is the not the movie team based on Marvel Now.

However, the Bendis incarnation had the personalities, precise appearances (StarLord's blonde hair, for example), clothing, etc. of that would later appear in the 2014 film. Marvel Comics tends to promote versions of the characters that will soon be in film form. Gets fans to accept a sort of New Normal about the characters.

Um, James Gunn has mentioned multiple times in interviews that Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's Guardians of the Galaxy run from 2008 was the primary source of inspiration behind the movie. The garbage Bendis run in which he changed the personalities of the characters especially Quill and Drax in order to match up with the movie was done after the movie was announced. It didn't inspire the movie, its actually the other way round. And I hate Marvel for doing that. The comics should influence the movies, not vice-versa.

@@cosmicdream17 Inspiration not basis for appearance and personalities. Look at the Bendis series from 2012, before the 2014 GotG film. Clearly Marvel and Gunn collaborated on making the PRECISE presentation of that is the MORE MODERN Guardians and got fans accepting of it by first introducing it in the comics. You are right but not precisely right. Fans of the Marvel Now series were asking why is Star Lord blonde and Rocket looking a bit different since the 2008 Abnett and Lanning run. They were close, but there were cosmetic and personality differences.

Another thing to consider is the state that we are in as a culture/world with the pandemic. Now may be the best time to do lowkey movies and take some chances with lesser-known characters. Then after we get things figured out as far as dealing with covid, they will bring out the big teams such as the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and the next iteration of the Avengers.

I mostly agree with this. I do think Phase 1 up to Avengers was less planned out with a lot of the phase going to getting the avengers together and The Avengers setting the course from their. Perhaps Phase 4 is similar in this way - getting the pieces in place that set the course for later phases.

Zemo was the only choice for a villain. I wonder if they'll do something like in the comics, when Bucky was Cap & Zemo outed his Winter Soldier past to the world (in this case, exploit that Cap is running around with a known terrorist. The MCU world only knows him for his false-attack in Civil War, not his long history as a top global assassin; time for the world to know). Also, WandaVision tying directly into Strange has my ears perked. The fact that two other shows will also be about romps through the Multiverse. I like the speculation of Wanda is being about her having a sort of mental breakdown & tearing at the Multiverse. King's Vision was a wholly unsettling series to read

Nope. Look into the history of the Mutants in the Marvel Universe (the 616 one). Then look into the history of the Eternals and the Deviants. Realize their origins are one and the same event. Finally, conclude that Mutants will be introduced into the MCU by means of _The Eternals_ .

I really don't understand the sentiment that Marvel has dropped the ball with phase 4 - not least because none of it's been seen, yet... Did people just want more of the same? Iron Man Legacy, perhaps? Old Man Cap, maybe? All culminating in Avengers Resurrected? This might be the phase I'm most interested in, because I really don't know what to expect. It's all over the place in terms of style, genre and time-frame; it's introducing characters I know little about; there's probably going to be some movement towards the introductions of FF4 and X-men; and I bet it is building to something, but we won't know what until it gets there. Great video, as always.

I've had a hard time taking my mind off the idea since and I'm curious if you've put any through to the idea. Like how might Civil War have been different if Wanda and Pietro were on different sides of the conflict? Or what if Pietro survived the snap and Wanda didn't?

Wouldn't be the first time they do this. Avengers was fallowed by Iron Man 3 - a story primarily about battling PTSD, obsessive behavior and the demons of your own past. Age of Ultron was followed by Civil War - a story about one man's vengeful attempt to disassamble a team of friends and lead them to battle each other to the death, while calling into question the very idea of what they stand for

They might also be setting up something cosmic for the next round of phases. We now have the Kree and the Skrulls in the MCU, and we now know that Nick Fury is somewhere in outer space with some kind of armada of spaceships. They could easily do something like the Kree-Skrull war in which Earth is the ant at risk of being trampled by fighting elephants. Or heck, now that they got the rights to the X-Men characters, it could be some kind of three-way war between Kree, Skrulls, and the Shi'ar empire.

It seems clear to me looking at the lineup that eternals is a launching point for the next few phases. Eternals -> Xmen & FF. Masters of Evil wasn’t something i was thinking about but would be dope, I definitely see the next “Thanos-level” threat being a Galactus or Dr Doom long term.

Maybe they are secretly plotting. Thanos’ inclusion into the first avengers was a random choice where Joss Whedon had no idea how crucial he would be to the plot. We don’t know what’s happening here.

Masters of evil, cosmic adventures, horror and the dark arts. Phase 4 is gonna be awesome. However I think the Thunderbolts is far more likely than the masters of evil considering the state of the MCU with the accords and the lack of heroes now. The government will probably form a team of enhanced criminals to round up heroes that haven't signed the accords and to take up the role of the new avengers team.

Phase 4 has Loki, Blade, Black Widow, Doctor Strange in a horror set up, Scarlet Witch and Vision.... I am in. I have always loved Loki and Black Widow in MCU. I really liked the Blade 1 and 2 movies, so, I am interested in MCU's take on this character. I have always felt that Vision and Scarlet Witch were not utilised properly by this franchise but now they are finally giving them their own series. I guess, I am kinda curious about winter soldier and falcon...depends on the show. In the end, I am not hyped for phase 4. But it's MCU. I have expectations from them. Till now, they have mostly not disappointed me.

Masters is Evil would be ok, but what I’d really love to see is the Thunderbolts. I know they’re basically the same group, but presentation matters. What a great moment that would be to have a new super team show up to fill the vacuum Tony and Cap have left and then get the Zemo reveal. The pieces are all there.

Master of Evil...If I might take a page from your book, sir: a couple of simple changes that could have introduced the MOE and a more faithful Zemo back in Civil War: Mostly the same, except Crossbones gets away at the beginning but Wanda still causes the disaster. Then it's Klaw that causes the explosion that kills Black Panther's dad (setting up the Black Panther/Klaw personal enmity from the comics). At the end, it's revealed that Zemo is a rogue Hydra commander with his own plan, counter to Project Insight: instead of eliminating 'exceptional' people, he believes an organization of exceptional people should rule openly, not from the shadows. Ending is the same fight between Iron Man and Cap, but prior to that, the Hydra elite supersoldiers are already dead, and Zemo draws blood from one and injects it into himself: the Hydra elite is his father and the blood gives him enhanced strength. Then when Black Panther shows up to confront him, Zemo fights him off, and is joined by Crossbones, Klaw, and Dr. Zola in a robot body. During the fight, Zemo's 'face' is torn and it's revealed to be a mask like they used in Winter Soldier, and beneath is the purpose Zemo-mask stuck to his skin. As Zemo, Zola, Crossbones and Klaw board their escape craft, Zemo says: "The world has had its Avengers. Now, it will have Masters!"

Watching this in 2021 is interesting. They are clearly not pantsing after all. Phase 4 (and maybe 5 and 6) is going to be dealing with Kang the Conqueror and the multiverse. And I like how much the Disney+ series have really set it up for us.

Watching this video in January of 2023 after Phase 4 has ended, really puts what we ended up getting into perspective. Not everything in this video aged well like the villains list. But the overall feel of Phase 4 makes sense when you think of it as a pantsing phase. And I personally enjoyed it!

Soooo excited for WandaVision. Not only did i love the 2016 Vision comic it could draw influence from, but i love these two characters, and I've always felt they were put on the backburner. I think going Masters of Evil route would be extremely interesting. Like normal you pitched an idea I have not thought of yet and I really like it. One of Marvel's main criticisms is having too many one off villains so how amazing would it be to pretend to do that in Phase 4 and Phase 5 but then in Phase 6 or even Phase 7 bring most of them back as the Masters of Evil. Not announcing another Avengers movie makes 100% sense. The Avengers as we know it are OVER! Black Widow and Iron Man are dead, Hawkeye has retired again, Captain America is retired and old, Banner merged his two personalities and is tamer, and Thor sound like he'll be off world finding out who he is. Spidey has said multiple times he is a small picture, protect the neighborhood kind of superhero. Everyone else are sidekicks or have their own things and wouldn't make sense to lead the team. New Avengers wouldn't stand up to the original Avengers and Young Avengers would be difficult to do. Expecting Feige to announce or tease the new big bad is idiotic. Thanos was first teased in Avengers 1, which was the 6th movie of the MCU. Give Feige time to reestablish the universe and introduce new characters.

I think we’ll finally get to see more of that element of playfulness-in storytelling, in visuals, in characters-in the MCU that is in comic books. It’s what makes that storytelling medium so unique and fun, is the freedom in how we can tell a story. I’m excited for that freedom to mix in a movie universe. Very excited.

I think each project has a purpose going forward. Not all are clear yet but this is what I have: Shang Chi, Falcon and Winter Soldier, Thor Love and Thunder, , and Black Widow are all projects designed to continue a legacy they'll expand on in phase five (Mandarin being a big bad). Zemo's intro will probably be used to set up the Thunderbolts - a team of villains drafted to become hero's - in phase five. Hawkeye, Loki, and WandaVision are building towards Young Avengers. And this is my big one: Wanda Vision and Doctor Strange are setting up House of M to introduce mutants.

The idea of a Thunderbolts movie has been thrown around a lot recently, so depending on what version of the team they're going with (most likely Zemo's Masters Of Evil in disguise) it wouldn't surprise me if we saw that squeezed in at the end of Phase 4 or midway through Phase 5.

I think for phase 4 and even for phase 5, after finishing long-waited and big events like Infinity War and Endgame, I think they're just gonna cool down on the cross overs and focus on new solo story lines for new characters (shang chi, eternals, blade, fantastic four, etc...) while also continuing the story arcs for characters that has already been in the mcu (spider-man, black panther, doctor strange, etc...) while secretly preparing a big bad villain for the next big crossover....

The Hawkeye in that series always strikes me as younger and less settled (or at least less fulfilled) than the current wife-and-three-kids one of the MCU. Are they going with a different actor?

I personally think instead of having all of them team up against a bad guy, they should do a sort of Battle Royale like some of the comics. That would mean they can get as creative and crazy as they want and fans could get behind and root for their favorites. Imagine two favorites characters Shang-Chi and Captain America, fighting in an actual battle to the death and you’re afraid because you know that he universe can move on without them. They could do so much great stuff
