Judith A. Curry is a climatologist, the founder of Climate Forecast Applications Network, and the author of a new book: Climate Uncertainty and Risk: Rethinking Our Response. In her third appearance on the podcast (the last was December 27, 2022) Curry talks about her new book, the “oversimplified analysis” of climate that’s being used by legacy media and policymakers, censorship, the importance of Twitter, and why we need to see the global climate as a “complex, chaotic, non-linear system.” (Recorded August 18, 2023.)

She sure is, she knows better than to live in right in Reno where they’ve been obliterating heat records in the summer. She lives in higher elevations where it’s cooler, she said so herself. If she was really sane, she’d live over here along the Ohio River where we’re experiencing no summer warming because we burn tons of coal and the SO2 reflects the sun.

Here is a summary of the key points from the podcast discussion between Robert Bryce and Judith Curry: • Judith Curry is a climate scientist and author of the new book "Climate Uncertainty and Risk: Rethinking our Response". The book examines uncertainties in climate science and advocates for more open debate on climate change issues. • Curry argues that climate policy has become constrained, with little tolerance for dissenting views. She wants more diverse perspectives considered in climate debates. • The book contains over 1500 footnotes citing evidence to support Curry's analysis. She wanted it published by an academic press and peer reviewed to establish its scholarly credibility. • Curry criticizes the rush towards renewable energy like wind and solar as climate policy. She sees it as foolish to make our energy system more weather-dependent and vulnerable. • On censorship, Curry has faced challenges sharing her views on social media platforms like Facebook and KZbin. She sees Twitter as more open under Elon Musk. • Curry argues anti-capitalist and anti-democratic ideology influences much climate policy and activism. She wants less top-down control and more open debate. • On the youth climate lawsuits, like Held v. Montana, Curry believes the courts are ill-equipped to handle the technical complexities. She sees the cases as emotionally manipulative. • Curry believes apocalyptic climate rhetoric has gone too far. She hopes for more balance and nuance in climate communications to avoid psychologically harming youth. • Overall Curry calls for humility, constructive debate, and considering diverse policy options when addressing the complex challenges of climate change. -Anthropic Claude-2-100k

Her big thing is to try to emphasize UNCERTAINTY. It's a strategy discussed in the book "Merchants of Doubt." The tobacco industry hired "experts" for years to do the same thing."We need more debate, more discussion, more blah blah blah." For how long? Forever! The overwhelming majority of climate scientists are in agreement as to what is causing this accelerated climate change, and they're backed by decades of studies and research. In climate science Curry is regarded as a crank. What does she get out of it? Lots of attention; Endless paychecks for interviews and paid testimony; Checks from the Heartland Institute as well as other conservative fossil fuel dark money funded orgs. Her weather forecasting company also has oil companies as clients. lol.And now she's got a book to cash in with. There's only a small handful of climate scientists with actual credentials whom the dirty fuel lobby can get to deny the science, so they're in high demand. They can't quite get Curry to do deny humans are causing global warming. She's coy. The most they can get out of the hag is to blather about "uncertainty, " "more debate needed," and say "we don't know how much of it is caused by humans" (and never will), and then she gives her little chuckle.

Judith Curry has been wrong many times in the past. She told us that warming was over in 1995. She said the same thing in 1998, in 2002, in 2007 and 2010. Then she told us we'd likely be cooling right through the year 2030. Wrong every time. Does anyone here every check her history or seek rebuttals? Clearly not. It's why the context box is so important.

 @seewhatifound False, equivalence. So obviously a false equivalence that you are simply stating to anybody reading that you know they're as thick 2 short planks and will fall for your moronic crap. "climate activists" == People who aren't scientists, know nothing much, just concerned about what they "hear", a dog's breakfast, eclectic grab bag of bods of understanding, and motives, as broad as the galaxy is wide. "Judith Curry" a former actual climate scientist (I've used an Arctic paper she co-authored for my hobby science study) who RELIES ON her "Appeal To Authority" from back before she decided her best wealth was to be a Tool of the vested wealth interests instead of an honest, hard-working scientist like the THOUSANDS of others. Your choice to compare Judith Curry with "climate activists" instead of with THOUSANDS of climate scientists is you spitting in our faces without having the good grace to pretend that it's raining.

She was probably right at the time, but as heat islands expand that create much of the increase due to explosions in population where most reading are taken, what was right in 1998 is probably still right today if you adjust for all those influences and everything else. A number of esteemed scientists with respectful credentials and no career to lose have proved that rising CO2 levels over and above today's level will have no effect, if it ever did before. It's all been a money game who can make the most out of the gullible.

@@carolynngockel3670 How is switching to clean energy "worse than the disease?" Wind and solar are the two cheapest forms of energy on earth and, coupled with battery back-up, are capable of powering us 80-90% of the time, according to multiple studies.
@carolynngockel3670
@carolynngockel3670 6 ай бұрын
@@swiftlytiltingplanet8481 because they aren't cheap in lives or money and aren't really clean. Wind and solar are only "cheap" when the wind blows/sunshines. They need a fossil fuel backup. They wind up more expensive because the fossil fuel backup must be manned constantly to be available for sudden unavailability. Batteries aren't a good option. Elon's battery pack only works for a few hours, and wind/sun can be absent for days. These batteries are not even "green" tech though, as they require heavy metals to manufacture. Some places are pretending to be "green" by using wood pellets as "renewable" energy/backup for wind and solar. This is causing deforestation. Look up at how deforestation changes the local temperature. The effects are more intense than climate change. Wind and solar take more space so can cause habitat loss. (Note: rooftop solar does make sense.) A single windmill in Germany (where this was measured) can kill 4 million insects a year. This is devastating for the food chain. They also tend to kill raptors, the rare birds. Wind and solar are decent for about 11% of the grid, but after that the costs mount. This is a short summary. I highly recommend: Unsettled by Koonin, Fossil Future by Alex Epstein, and MIchel Shellengberger's Apocolypse Never. These books go into the nitty gritty details. Green policies aren't human friendly, and ultimately, not environmental friendly.
