I really like flowers and colours and shit so I got a flowery bag and at first everyone was roasting me at school for it and asking me why but later on people started complimenting me and even asking me where i got it from. People are afraid of what they don't understand but that doesn't mean we have to live in a world where we don't try anything new or go against the norm just because we don't understand it.

While you for sure wear a lot of things that i would never personally wear, gotta respect the fact that you're true to you and your own style, and that you simply wear what you like, not caring whether or not its in trend or if other ppl will like it or not. Respect for that for sure, nice vid Avery!

avery, i really appreciate you making this video. i know your audience is probably mainly male but im a female and love watching your videos because its raw and honest and your passion for fashion is so inspiring. this video really hit close to home. i constantly have this internal battle, choosing between what i want to wear vs. how i want others to see me vs. what i should be wearing to fit in..i always feel like i have to "under-dress" to fit in to certain groups of people because i dont want to be seen as superficial or dress more 'trendy' for others and its so exhausting! i feel like im always the one making compromises and im never truly happy with what i wear. i know this sounds stupid but i spend hours on end trying to decide what to wear all the time to uni, out, or just down the street and i know i shouldnt give a flying f about what people think and i should wear whatever the fk i want but its really just not that easy for me. its something im trying to work on though..i dont really know where im going with this but i just want to say thank you for making this video and that your efforts dont go unnoticed :) x
@PendulumCA7 жыл бұрын
i feel the same with the internal battle of for whom and what to dress. week in and week out my mood changes. i think it's all about being comfortable with the way you feel at that very moment, we're not stuck to one outfit or aesthetic every single day. obviously that requires a varied wardrobe, but i found my style to go from being very trend driven a year ago, to just being comfortable and cozy these days.

Aimee, I've definitely felt the same way. It's a lot easier to dress differently when your social circle-or just the people around your everyday life-are more accepting of it. But if I could I'd like to give some advice escalating from easier to harder to do: • Accept that the situation is what it is and just deal with it. • Try to get other people more into fashion and share that hobby with them. • Try to find a better fitting social circle. Make other friends into fashion. • Move. Where you live might be limiting you. Personally, I've done a combination of the first three of those so far to degrees of success. But, even if this sounds absurd to some folks, at a certain point it does make sense to move. If fashion is really important to you and you really want it to be a big part of your life, it moving to a place where that's more appreciated is perfectly fine.

This is a very interesting topic of discussion. I think most people can be more confident in their own style simply because of the time we live in. Instagram and the internet as a whole acts like a double-edged sword both killing and creating creativity.
@GearedTowardGear7 жыл бұрын
That's a great point. And sometimes the double-edges are the opposite of clear cut. Genuine people getting put down, others getting shot to the top, and everywhere in between.
@brianuluocha847 жыл бұрын
GearedTowardGear its a bummer when people daring enough to explore more avant-garde fashion choices get labeled as eccentric while people who copy and paste outfits get treated like innovators. I guess all that matters is that your sense of style genuinely resonates with you, however annoying it may be to see unoriginality flourish.
@Willi4mTrinh7 жыл бұрын
thanks for making this video. "runway fashion is fantasy" perfectly sums up why I enjoy fashion now that you've brought this to light. it's a look inside what a designer would see on the body and it's very personal and vulnerable at the same time. putting yourself out there by dressing how you want in public brings you closer to yourself and as they say "real recognize real".
@LilWayne17277 жыл бұрын
Man finally started putting out videos again regularly. Having your own sense of style makes others appreciate it way more people definitely notice when you aren't copying or trying to mimic someone else. Nothing worse than an Instagram streetwear page come to life and asking to link and build.

When you said you don't wear certain things to clubs, well I'm with you there, It's more a case of dressing right for the environment. You can't wear nice shoes to clubs as they will get wrecked, especially the clubs I go to. Plus most club nights are hot and sweaty and I don't want my favourite pieces to end of stinking of sweat and split drinks haha. You made a ton of other points too that I'm with you on. I'm 34 and I dress what I like and what I can pull off, yes that includes trends etc, but if it looks good then why not? I can't even describe my style, it's definitely leaning more towards streetwear and I'm into really interesting cuts, textures and materials and colour wise I'm definitely an earth tones fan. I think the society you live in has a huge influence on what you wear, I certainly don't feel pressured to dress a certain way where I live, but I can see that in places like the US where people get categorised etc that there would be external pressures. It's a really interesting topic and I could discuss it in length. I like these kind of videos.

@dominiquej54657 жыл бұрын
idk something rubs me the wrong way about dressing as you see your internal self, because self awareness has limitations and not everyone has the time to sit down and be introspective about that style as a result of lifestyle is passive and what trend-casters draw most inspiration from. lets not forget ultimately class reflects personal style

Love hearing your thoughts. Confidence is some deep mumbo jumbo shit, but that was real talk. I feel that it's not two sides of a coin or one way of dressing or another, but more of a spectrum that changes depending on the factors surrounding it, like you said at a club and not wanting to get your clothes fucked, and trying to fit what's expected, but maybe that's just me. Sometimes we want to be recognised and given attention to for wearing things that are in trend, but don't want to be recognised for things out of it although that can be our real representations or real style of dressing. I find myself in a situation right now similar to yours a while back, still trying to find my own sense of style and I don't really know whether it's coming to fruition to represent me and whether or not that's really important as long as I think it's cool. I like to pick out things that I see on a daily basis and incorporate them into my own style. I try to stay away from the so-called hypertrends and really stick to things that inspire me or things that I have admiration for or things that I just find cool like a certain colour scheme, and even if they are somewhat trendy its something I will continue to wear even after the trend dies, but I think this can only apply to me on my free days where I don't have things like school or work (as I have a uniform for both), which put restrictions on me. It can even sometimes be the social group/construct around you that limits you (smh at all these mofo hypebeasts), but then again it's up to you to have the confidence to just dress however the hell you want and as long as you think you look good, screw the opinions and the looks and the discussions other people will have about you.
@GearedTowardGear7 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing all this. Spectrum couldn't be more true. When you're at school do you try and switch some things up? Like finding attitude in simple changes such as socks or shoes or undershirts?
@bobbyyomi-ashiwaju85317 жыл бұрын
Sometimes, almost all the time my socks aren't a blank colour.I try to incorporate things and push the edge to see how much I can get away with, like wearing turtle necks, or denim jackets even though it's just supposed to be blazers (suit jacket) and shirts, and when I can't do that I like to wear shirts with nice colour schemes or things like polka dots on them. The only shoes I wear are really derbys or brouges, as although I like the look of things like loafers and chelseas, they don't really suit my feet :(

Yo man I really love this. I really try to dress to my situation and how I look I go to the gym quite a bit so am quite muscular, so when I go clubbing I tend to head toward more form fitting clothes like a slim polo or slim button down. But when I head into college I love dressing over size and layering so I layer huge polos over hoodies and wear big old puffa jackets. I also tend to try and stick simple - don't wanna be too crazy unless I get roasted. When I'm not in college tho I dress crazy as I like and I do really enjoy it. Love this video man and love your channel!! Keep it up x❤️

i relate so much when you mentioned wearing weird things for attention vs. for yourself. back in 2008 I studied Industrial design and wanted everyone to think i'm "unique", so i wore every shit i knew would make heads turn e.g. boat neck t-shirt with over suspenders (think Chris from King of Fighters) even though it was not exactly something i liked. then when i realize i was being an attention whore i totally changed how i dressed up and just wore boring t-shirts & sweatpants, or just things that everybody else wear. i got bored from looking like everyone else so easily, but now i just can't wear the things that i really want to cuz i know it's not the norm and people will look at me, even though i'm not trying to get attention anymore

I'm so glad you made this video. This sparks a conversation I've been wanting to have for so long but just never found the time to do it. I first want to say that I love you Avery. You and I have completely different styles but yet I still admire and get inspired by your unique look. Which leads me into why I am commenting. I get what you're trying to say in this video. It's quite obvious. I feel as if you are throwing shade at people who wear more of the mainstream brands like, Fear of God, Off-white, Supreme, etc. and although I do agree with some of the points you mention, like dressing to express who you are, I do have to disagree with the "If you don't wear something super crazy and over top unorthodox then you're just dressing to fit in" vibe you're going with. I am someone who dresses like Justin Bieber more than anyone else, but that's because I like that style. I didn't see justin bieber wearing what he does and go "OH! I NEED TO WEAR THAT! I'LL BE SO POPULAR AT MY SCHOOL IF I DO!" Never once did that cross my mind. I fell in love with a similar style of his because I felt like it represented me. and coming from someone who was still wearing Aero in 10th grade I wanted and needed a change and while I was buying new clothes I naturally gravitated towards that " big tee, zipper pants, with vans" look. it's just what I like and I didn't think you should shun people because they don't dress like something you would consider not mainstream. If I like something I'm going to wear it, regardless if it's mainstream or not. Most of the time I don't even buy that super hypebeast shit. Ask me if I have a pair of nmds or ultra boost...the answers no. I'll stick to collecting my vans because vans are dope af! As someone who doesn't dress "unorthodox" or much like yourself I still love have HUGE respect for people who dress outside of the norm. I admire so many different styles that I wouldn't even consider my style interesting like most of my peers do. But just because my style is a little mainstream doesn't mean I don't respect fashion as much as you do or that I'm trying to "play the part". What I wear is who I am, and I fuck with it. Heavy. Fuck you if it's too "mainstream" for you. why would I force myself to wear something I don't think I would necessarily look comfortable in. That makes no sense. Like I said, I love you bro. But some of the shade you tried to throw in this video really set me off.
@MW-ud8zp7 жыл бұрын
I just cannot force myself to wear something I don't like just because someone else thinks it looks good. I dress for myself. If I feel cool that probably means I look cool. That being said I don't dress in any extremely unusal way nor do I identify with any of the easily recognisable subcultures, which means I rarely come across negative social response...which makes me believe that if that was the case it wouldn't be so easy for me to dress true to myself...shit...it's complicated.
