How to wake stone dragons: kill your lover (Nissa Nissa, Drogo, Eurons girl?), sacrifice priest/mage (MMD, Aeron), dead unborn child (Rhaego, Euron's child) Euron is going to resurrect an undead dragon that is under the sea in Oldtown (base of the hightower is Valyrian construction and its called "Battle Isle" for a reason) It's really likely that this is what Egg wanted to do at Summerhall and was foiled by Dunk and what Aerys was also trying to fulfill. Interestingly Melisandre could also fulfill these requirements all by herself for Stannis (or i guess jon )

Lots of people have speculated that Jon or Dany might be Azor Ahai, but it seems quite clear that if it's anyone, it's Euron. Given that the original Azor Ahai supposedly murdered his own wife, we shouldn't assume that Azor Ahai was some morally upstanding character and might have been just as evil as Euron, and just became whitewashed by history.

Another great theory! I never made the connection that "king's blood" comes from the prophecy! I thought of mirri maz duur as 'just' a sacrifice but her innate magic and priesthood being the catalyst makes a lot of sense. As priests/godkings were imporant figures, sacrificing them would be a costly price to pay for powerful magic. I want to propose a thought to you: could Nissa Nissa have been a priestess and that is what made lightbringer so powerful? First came the creation of the sword, possible taken from a meteor. Then he tried to strenghten it through magic. When a 'regular' blood sacrifice (represented by the lion) wasn't enough, he tried again with holy blood to create a stronger magic. If you think of it like that, it parallels the bloodstone emperor killing his sister, a godqueen. What might have been a necessary sacrifice back then could be viewed as atrocious by a society that sees kinslaying as a sin, twisting him into a bad guy. Therefore the bloodstone emperor might have been azor ahai, who sacrificed his sister to create a magic sword through her holy blood and defeat the others. This is a thought i got while watching your video, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this

I really vibe with the theory that Azor Ahai and the Prince that was Promised are different. With that theory, the bloodstone emperor was the first azor ahai and started the long night. And the prince that was promised or the last hero was the one that ended it. I think Euron is azor ahai and will wake dragons from stone with a massive blood sacrifice. I think Jon is the prince that was promised because he is kings blood that was sacrificed to wake a dragon, meaning himself. I think the Jon that comes back will be a lot more Targaryen like. And this checks out because the targaryens were considered to be gods when they first came and had dragons. I suppose dany could be the same, but i think Jon will be it if he is resurrected.

Kris B Thanks! I think it also fits with the theory that the Great Empire of the Dawn (the forebears of the Yi Ti people) were dragon riders and that they were the people that taught the Valyrians dragon riding and that their capital was Asshai. Because with that theory it’s very likely that the bloodstone emperor and his sister were married in Valyrian style and that the blood betrayal was him killing his sister wife (nissa nissa). And because nissa nissa was considered to be a god at that time, he used that as a sacrifice for some ritual. I think this makes sense because of how I think magic works in the series. Varys said it best: “Power resides where people think it resides.” The sacrifice of a god king is powerful because people believe god kings to be powerful. The sacrifice of a king is less powerful because they aren’t considered to be as powerful. That’s why magic is stronger when there are dragons. Because dragons are living proof of magic that no one can refute. That’s why people think that Jon or dany will be azor ahai/prince that was promised. Because of their Valyrian heritage, they are believed to be above everyone else. Jon even more so because he came back from death. That’s just my thoughts.

I would love to discuss more with you so that we might look into it further, maybe collaborate. The word I use is also discussed in Jon's last 2 chapters and in one other chapter of Davos's. So, when im talking about king's blood in the video im talking about the sacrifical king's blood. There are for sure other times when a king is slain or someone mentioning being descended from kings within the series. I mean, fire and blood is full of dead kings, we have aerys, robert baratheon, robb stark, balon greyjoy and these are just the predominent ones. However, none of these deaths any magical aspect to them. What i had to do was find the context for the magical and sacrificial mentions in order to understand why melisandre would need this type of a sacrifice.

@@TheDisputedLands Yes, to be sure, my focus is on the magical potential, or lack thereof, in the living person than whatever small or large magic can be brought about by their death. Incidentally, my concept of kingsblood might tie together your concepts of holy blood and King's blood. anyone with "the gift" as varamyr calls it, can reach out with their mind. When holy people do this it is called praying. That is why Euron is asking Aeron to pray IMO, to waken the gift within him, to connect him to the krakens, just as the starks are connected to the direwolves and the Dany to her dragons.

I think blood in this context means gens. In asoiaf they talk of bloodlines and that relatives are of the same blood. What is needed to wake dragons from stone? Special gens. Targaryen gens. They probably are descendants from the Royal family of The Great Empire of the Dawn. They are probably "the kingly ghosts" in Danys wake the Dragon dream. And what does bloodmagic mean? Probably genetic engineering. We know the Valyrians did that and probably The Bloodstone Emperor before them.

@@jonhauge-evaldsson783 Yeah I agree with that but I think ultimately more people have Targ blood and potentially even more ancient Valyrian blood than many people realize. Daynes most likely have Valyrian blood so a lot of Northerners in general most likely do too. So a lot of people have kings blood, to the point that it raises the question of why obsess over purity? It's a pointless game. George has said in interviews obsession over blood lineage is pointless because everyone is a mix of many things. I personally buy the theory that Dany has blood of old Valeria via the Dayne lineage.

Spot on Amanda , excellent vid as always , look forward to you easing back into creating more content again. As usual I do agree with you here , the actual concept of king's blood in the traditional sense seems a flawed mess ; when we factor in usurpation , succession crises / issues , unexpected deaths , ntm the sheer amount of petty kings all over Westeros and the entire world at one point. The political power / governance / ruling aspect and designation with king's blood just does not make sense to me with magical ritual given how being considered royal or not , succession processes and the path to the throne can change over one's life or generations etc. Amanda your explanation makes much more sense to me and is close to a long held belief i have had that you have explained much better than I ever could. As we know magic is real and exists in GRRM's ASoIaF universe and the religions therein mostly seem originated from & centered around types of magic either closely connected to them currently or at least were at some point in their past (as is likely the case with the Faith of the Seven). The religions seem a vehicle to explain and reconcile those various types of magic imo. In that respect the magical and / or religious blood makes much more sense to be coveted and useful in ritual(s). It is also possible the "king's blood" concept came from that fact these ancient legendary kings & rulers were likely magical people / practitioners ; these kings of legend from all over the world likely embodied and practiced some form of magic (likely specific to where they existed and ruled from) which set them apart , gave them an edge to seize power and would be a reason why the masses in a given area would rally around them. That could be the nexus point with the "king's blood" concept and where the origin of the term likely came from in that the "kings" / rulers themselves were actually magical people be it the Gemstone Emperors (likely original blood of the dragon) , warg kings, green-seer kings , water magic kings / rulers and beyond etc. In the end the magical blood seems to be what is needed ; the "king's blood" concept has some connection to royal / political power to an extent as they were actual kings / rulers but more specifically stems from needing magical blood which those legendary kings / rulers had. Well done here as usual Amanda , your content is always top notch.

As complete as this theory is, there is something very obvious that was not mentioned in this video; DRAGON BLOOD. Targaryens are famed for breeding brother to sister, and this is a concept Cersei even dives deep on for obvious reasons. But what is missing from that is WHY Targaryens do this; because something magical IN their blood BINDS them to dragons. OLD VALERYA is supposed to have been very big into sorcery, and blood magic is involved in becoming a dragon lord. The reason they wed within their own family is to prevent diluting the potency of the magic in their blood. In Westeros, KINGS are primarily Targaryen in lineage, and even the houses that do not claim this, usually have some small measure of Targaryen blood. Stanis for example, his grandmother or great grandmother or something was from the blood line of the Targaryens. In a world where you can’t get it PURE very easily, there ARE a crap ton of bastard ones out there. So if you can’t get the magic full strength directly from a Targaryen, you CAN get it from a bastard decendent. Or even a diluted legitimized decendent (stanis, etc) “HOLY” as the Euron portions mention, neglects to look at the BLOOD MAGIC that would make one “holy” enough to be considered magically bound to a dragon. And in the Mary Mazdur section, yes Khal Drogo and Mary Mazdur sacrificed in that ritual are king and holy alike, but ALSO sacrificed in that moment is also DANYS SON, which is DRAGON BLOOD. Just a piece that seemed to be a weir oversight in a video this deep into the lore.

First loved the video , I'll definitely be checking out more! I'm also wondering about how far a descendant of a King it's still considarate king's blood, that's because a lot of the great houses have either been royal houses themselves in the past, or are connected to one. Although there's no mention of kings blood in Alester Florent's sacrifice, it is mentioned that it was "in order to obtain favorable winds for their expeditionIn". Could have Melissandre sacrificed Lord Alester Florent to fool Stannis into believing in the power of king's blood? House Florent is the most senior descendant of house Gardener and are the legitimate heirs to the extinct Kingdom of the Reach. If king's blood is applied that way it would be too easy, Robert himself had 16 bastards, almost all the main characters are descendant of a King. After wathcing the video I think that the theory about holy blood is much more likely than the king's blood.

I was just rereading a feast for crows and when samwell is talking about switching the babies and how “monster” is just a random baby born of incest so if he’s sacrificed it won’t do or mean anything I was thinking, back when we meet craster he is very adamant about him being a “godly man” and if the “blood of kings” is actually “holy/godly blood” then isn’t there a chance monster will be sacrificed and it will work better then it would if they sacrificed mance’s baby who only has “kings blood” because mance was named king beyond the wall? There could be lots of holes in this theory that I’m not aware of I don’t know nearly as much about ASOIAF as many of you theorists. But I was just thinking, craster is very certain he is a “godly man” and even mormont says he is but that he “serves crueler gods then you or I.” So his children by all means could have some of the “holiest” blood in all of planetos thus why the others want his babies and thus why he needs them to be born of incest to keep the “holy blood” pure.

The real history has a lot to add to this prophecy too. My own religious lore too. Jathaka stories tell stories of previous lives of lord Buddha, when he was ‘the Sakvithi king’, the king who can rule the world, the king blessed by the gods upon his birth, the king who would rule the world just. Such a king was to worshipped with a funeral pyre with the highest respect; so much to be equivalent of funerals of Buddha and Monks who had achieved Nirvana.

In the Dany's pyre which awoke the dragons there were sacrifices of khal Drogo, priestess Mirri and Dany's son. Not sure if her son counts as he was already dead. As you mentioned that the ancient kings were also priests or "gods', perhaps for the sacrifice to work its magic ways, holy blood is required, yes, but perhaps the king's blood also, as they together form the "god king" blood.

Maybe for the magic bond to solidify, your own blood is needed also and that may be the purpose of Dany's son. King's blood, holy blood and the person's blood.

My theory is that Melisandre simply misheard or misread the keyword. Power is not in kinGs blood but the power is in kinS blood. This is not a secret since it was the basis of the Targaryen's source of power… incest=kinS blood Dany’s parents were brother and sister, kinS blood. She was able to hatch three dragon eggs. The ritual included a priestess, a human sacrifice, singing\wailing and encircled and consumed by fire. In fact, in the show we have already seen someone wake a dragon from the stone... he just did not realize what he had done, because he knows nothing. He resurrected a dead dragon from stone/ice. The ritual included a priest, a human sacrifice, singing\wailing and encircled and consumed by ice. Jon Snow has kinS blood. B+L=J It's been staring us in the face all along. He even looks more Stark than the Stark children. He bonded to a dire wolf. He doesn't have one trait of a Targaryen. This is what Syrio Forell meant by "see with your eyes" and ignore the fantasies. Everyone is so desperate to make these prophecies "fit" that they are ignoring the truth in front of their eyes. As for the visions, the 3 Eyed Crow shows Bran, as old Nan says "All crows are liars." Even the mention of the so-called "marriage" between Lyanna and Rhaegar was a sentence at the bottom of a page that could have been inserted at any time. Also, it was in a diary where the maestre kept a record of his bowel movements. That is GRRM cheekily telling us that this diary was full of 💩 So yeah B is Benjen, the first person in the show to talk to Jon about fatherhood. It would also explain why Ned sent Benjen to the wall instead of making him his bannerman and then sending Benjen's son to the same fate. Lastly, GRRM reinforces the difference between kin and king when he repeatedly uses kiN slaying and kinG slaying.

I think the Azor Ahai prophecy and the Prince that was Promised prophecy are one in the same. AAR is pretty clearly Daenarys, as she is the only character to literally wake living dragons from stone, as her eggs are said to have fossilized into stone, and this is the only time we see king's blood working some supernatural feat. While Dany is the literal AAR, it is possible that Jon Snow is a metaphorical AAR figure as well. If you belive R+L=J, then Jon has king's blood.

If Danerys didnt already obviously fulfill this piece of the prophecy, I hc Jon is the stone dragon that must be awoken with king's blood. He's a Targaryen/Valyrian AKA "Dragon" and, well, dead at this point. All signs are pointing to his resurrection, also. He's also likely another "head" to the 3-headed-dragon in the prophecy, etc. It's just all very intertwined.

The biggest question for me isn’t why It has power but what it is. Is it just that royal blood is magical blood, so all magical blood is King’s blood? Or, is that the belief and power people have in a king gives his blood power? Or is it a leader of men willingly sacrificing themselves? All three cases are true always.

What are your thoughts on the Long Night timeline actually being 5,000 years ago rather than 8,000-10,000? If that's the case, the Azor Ahai prophecy may not even be a prophesy--but documentation of the original person. Also, if holy blood is the real king's blood, what do you make of the fact that the Dothraki seem to have collected them as well? Also, it's my belief that much of Dorne is based on Dune. As such....who would be The God Emperor of Dorne... Okay, I'll stop. Edit: you know what? The sandworms of Dune have armored bodies and represent fire (part of the biological process of making spice) also... Wonder if that means anything. One last thing (I swear): Daenerys' Dragon hatching was viewed as a religious experience by the Dothraki. Does that make her a king? I think it does.

Yes, that does make her a king in a sense, the dothraki follow strength and they viewed it as a miracle that she could survive the fire and bring dragons into the world, but according to dothraki tradition a king is referred to as a khal, dany is considered the equivalent of a khal by her dothraki followers after the miraculous event and retains the epithet of khaleesi.

Every time we as a fandom discuss Azor Ahai-the Promised Prince prophecy, I can't help but think it 100% is Dany. There's just-too much subtext for it not to be her, and Martin has always been a staunch critic of changing the plotline because something became obvious to the reader. Here's some points *I personally think* lend credibility to Dany being the Azor Ahai: > She's born in Dragonstone (amidst salt and smoke, yada yada yada. Also, from it being during a storm, there would be no sun, stars or moon during that particular day, which also happened during the Long Night-that utter, almost unnatural darkness. If y'all ever witnessed a tropical monsoon, you know what I'm talking about) > Daenerys killed her love (Drogo) by her own hand. He was in a vegetative state, half dead, half alive, brought back by black magic, but then again, we didn't get the specifics about Nissa Nissa. > Had the sacrifice of king's blood (her own son, Rhaego, who was the Targaryen heir by all intends and purposes, SPECIALLY after Drogo promises to take back the Iron Throne for his wife. It wasn't a direct thing, but when she killed Mirri Maz Duur maybe Rhaego's "life force" or whatever, taken by her to bring back Drogo, was transferred to the eggs, thus fulfilling that bit of the ritual by accident) > Woke literal dragons out of stone eggs (no other character came CLOSE to it in a more tangible way, and I don't think the prophecy meant stone dragons poetically) She's the Unburnt, reborn from a pire that SHOULD have killed her (which by Martin's admission was a freak phenomenom-that sounds like a one in a thousand years prophecy, doesn't it?). Aegon united the Seven Kingdoms after a dragondream of his, and Rhaegar, in his arrogance, thought he was the Prince Who Was Promised after another one of those; would make sense that the last remaning Targaryen (completely ignoring maester Aemon and the Dragonseeds, I know!) would carry that prophecy to fruition. She's fire, a nepobaby idealist whose justice seems to be, at times, selective (read: Maquiavel had a point. Daenerys is a monarch and monarchs tend to have either loose morals or a loose political hold over their realm)-the very opposition to ice and death; the last of which is, somewhat, more realistic and democratic as it gets to all eventually and in equal measure, be them baseborn, slaves or noblemen. All men must die, tomato tomato. You get the gist. Edit: Also! If we consider this Empire of Dawn to Dragonlords of Valyria to Targaryen pipeline, that would mean House Targaryen has literal divine blood, and so, to a lesser extent, does House Baratheon. That would explain why Robert's blood was "king's blood" even though he was an usurper. I personally don't believe magic cares much about gentry disposition as much as it cares about literal bloodline properties, to be honest.

Edit²: my bets are Jon will be the new consort to the Night Queen, but will turn on her at the last moment to save the world. He will thus help Daenerys and take his place as the third dragon head, alongside Blackfyre Aegon and their aunt. Like genderbend!Conquerors. Maybe the Night Queen and the Maid Made Of Light are also the same entity. Galadriel sorta thing. She's that terrible force whose knowledge is so great and nature so inhuman she is monstrous to all weaker creatures who are unable to understand the meaning of her ways. Aaaaaand Bran... Bran's been the narrator all along, as the three eyed raven. That one is a wild guess based off the funny voices inside my head, but I'd be so cool if it was true lol

The ancient sumerian notion of kinghood is based on the sacred marriage, a tradition that passed down millennia. The king would ritually marry the highest goddess, closely linked with the powers of the sun. Failure to keep the goddess happy would result in disasters such as famines, and require the sacrifice of the king himself. A new king would then marry the goddess. God-kings is a perversion of this relationship, which wasn't tenable to kings that became extremely powerful. Then look at the cult of egyptian goddess Isis. Mock sacrifices, induced near death experiences to enter into the afterlife to gain sacred relationship with her, awakening from the afterlife to return was the sign. Tacticus the Roman historican that wrote on the various Germanic tribes described them as 'worshipping Isis" i.e some goddess with the same powers or role. They would practice human sacrifice to a high degree. Later norse mythology provides a story which gives context to how ritual sacrifice would work. In Hyndlaljod, a man sacrifice a boar, his soul melting together with the boars, then being ridden into the afterlife by Freya. Long story short, sacred marriage, gaining powerful mythological knowledge and the gift of rememberance and return to the living. Sacrifices and mock sacrifices was a essential initiation to kingship. And at least one swedish king was sacrificed to fix repeated crop failures. Now, not all of this has influenced something in ASOIAF. But I can see some elements. Might be something to look into? I think your way of seeing religions comparatively is bringing out fantastic richness to grrm's mythology.

Like with Renly, she saw either 2 or 3 outcomes, but they can't all be right. What if, if she never did the leaches, then the other Kings didn't die? But because she did, then they did die.
