The Power of 'No'

It’s a short simple word: ‘no’.
But for some people, it’s extremely difficult to use nonetheless. Especially so-called ‘people pleasers’ have difficulties saying ‘no’ to the people they intend to please. Which is a shame, because the ability to say ‘no’ not only helps us to not do things that we don’t want to do; it’s also a deciding factor whether or not we’re able to commit to a task and to achieve certain goals. Moreover, the word ‘no’ helps us to stick with our values and principles.
In the word ‘no’ lies great power. And in order to wield this power, it’s essential to see the workings of ‘no’ and how applying ‘no’ more frequently and in the right ways can make our lives better.
This video explores the power of ‘no’.

How do you react when people get angry?
@mafe4840
@mafe4840 3 жыл бұрын
@@JC-ce8uw ideally you disengage but your action is going to depend completely on the circumstances. How you will handle a non violent person getting angry will obviously differ heavily from how you handle a violent person who is now angry. And how you handle a stranger getting angry will differ from how you handle a roommate or family member you live with getting angry, etc. It will also depend on if the person is able to calm down and have a logical conversation later and is able to handle any form of constructive criticism. So yeah i think, your response, has to take into account the specifics about the individual you're dealing with.

It’s funny, I’ve always been raised saying things like “sorry I can’t do that.” Etc. Until a few years ago I always added an apology when saying no but people always saw this as an opening to argue with me. When I started saying “no” matter of factly with no apology the arguments stopped. At work instead of “sorry I can’t do cash jobs” I say “no, you have to have an account with our head office to have work done.” It works like a charm. Don’t be sorry for saying no, don’t be a dick about it either.

The power to say no is a primary driver that caused me to start my consulting business. Being the ultimate authority in my own work life and being able to say no to anyone without risking my livelihood is powerful. Yes I have clients that could fire me from a job if I chose not to cooperate, but I have multiple clients and if one doesn't respect my schedule, or advice or ethical stance, there are others that do and I am free to focus on them. I think part of the draw of hiring an "outsider" like me is that I have no compunction to swallow objections and go with the herd. My opinions are generally better respected after I am able to deliver my first (well reasoned and respectful) "no" to a client.

Thank you for this. A universally relevant topic. You’re changing people’s lives here. Imagine a world where we all focused on bettering ourselves by saying no to other paths in life. We’d say yes to people when we really mean it and want to help others rather than out of hollow obligation. We’d perhaps form fewer relationships with people but stronger ones with more trust.

This reminds me of the time back when I was a junior clerk in an accounts office and the head guy of that office was an aloof nasty man who controlled the money spending protocols. He relished saying NO to people who sought his approval to purchase things that weren’t budgeted for, he would just look at the requisition form and then say NO and he really liked it when the other person asked what do you mean by NO, his reply was simply NO means NO and he then waited for the other person to leave the room bewildered and then he smiled and chuckled to himself.

Our Criminology Professor gave us a lecture on, "Situational Awareness and the Ego". It was largely about establishing personal space, especially in confrontational situation. The susceptible nature of humans was one of the key highlights, the common human condition of not wanting to offend; hence the willingness to go along against all senses of intuition. He used a simple test, "Next time somebody touches you, tell them 'Please don't touch me'", so as to asses their reaction when establishing personal boundaries. What I observed was, it would instantly elevate the ego and could be used as a method of asserting power within a constructive structure.
