Fun fact: the ps1 startup was made from the D-50 Synth keyboard by Roland and that specific patch (sound) is called "Spacious Sweep". I also know the man who created it. His name is Eric Persing. He worked for Roland Keyboards back in the 80s here in CA and engineered and programmed the D-50 (1987) Now he has his own best selling synth called Omnisphere. He's a friend of mine, I saw him recently at the Namm show. And yes, PS1 was the shit!

The PS2 startup sounds like you're awakening in a futuristic city, a burst of sound reaching your ears. But then you fade away from the commotion, and reach a sea shore bathed in moonlight, listening to the waves with a small breeze blowing through your hair. I remember just relaxing on the home screen before starting my games, listening to the lapping wave-like sounds.

Legend says that the Playstation start-up sound is the audio representation of the beginning of time itself, a toned down and poetic edit of the bang that started it all. Yes I did make this up but it's what I like to believe because it just sounds so... flawless and... awe-inspiring.

I've heard so many people say that the PS2 startup sound was scary or something but I've never heard it that way. I also never had it go red because the disc was unreadable so that might be a part of it. For me it's nostalgic and comforting like the PS1, just not quite as good.

OMG nooo it's not at all that way for me. The PS2 startup sound, blue fog, towers, the dots of light rotating through the transmorphing memory cards and discs in the white void browser, the purple nebula system settings with diamonds for the clock. The whole aesthetic feels so comfortable, entrancing, and mysterious yet peaceful, like coming "home" to our cosmic birthplace beyond this dimension and these mortal shackles. Basically the whole console including all its games is a hallucinogenic drug.

The PS2 startup sound was never scary for me, even as a kid. It always meant I was about to have fun, and enjoy myself. Whether it be by winning races and performing takedowns in Burnout 3, or making some sweet combos in Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2. To this day, it's still a warm and inviting sound. Brings back a lot of nostalgia. If I could, I would go back in time and punch my 10-year-old self in the face for trading in my PS2 at Gamestop for like $7 of in-store credit. But if you tried to start up the PS2 without a disk in, then yes, the red screen and ambiance were pretty scary

I actually got so scared once of the red screen, that I thought my console was cursed and it was going to kill me or something so I ended up not touching it (hell not even going in the same room as it) until my parents came home and exorcised the red devil so that I could carry on playing Ratchet and Clank. Fun times.
