Tal said that 22. Rae1 was the best move. Fischer wrote it down and pushed the scoresheet towards Tal, who grinned. Fischer then played 22. Qc6+ instead. After the game, Tal asked Fischer why he changed his mind and the American said, "Well, you laughed when I wrote it down!"

The 1959 Candidates Tournament was hosted by three cities in Yugoslavia. The first 14 rounds were played in Bled, rounds 15-21 in Zagreb, and rounds 22-28 in Belgrade. This event would select the next challenger to world champion Mikhail Botvinnik, who had just recaptured his title in the Botvinnik - Smyslov World Championship Rematch (1958). Mikhail Tal, Svetozar Gligorić, Pal Benko, Tigran Petrosian, Friðrik Ólafsson and Bobby Fischer qualified from the Portoroz Interzonal (1958). Vasily Smyslov and Paul Keres were seeded directly into the candidates tournament on the strength of their 1-2 finish in the previous Amsterdam Candidates (1956). Harry Golombek was arbiter, and the seconds were Bent Larsen (Fischer), Yuri Averbakh, joined later by Alexander Koblents (Tal), Vladas Mikenas (Keres), Isaac Boleslavsky (Petrosian), Igor Bondarevsky (Smyslov) Aleksandar Matanovic (Gligorić), Klaus Viktor Darga and Ingi Randver Johannsson (Ólafsson), and Rudolf Maric (Benko)

There is more to the story than Tal giving a simple smile. :) From his autobiography: (Tal fans REALLY need to get this book!) "...Fischer first wrote down QR-K1, without a doubt the strongest move, and he wrote it not in English but in European, almost Russian! And he not very deftly pushed the scoresheet towards me. "He's asking for an endorsement!" I thought to myself. But how to react? To frown was impossible, and if I smiled he would suspect ... 'trickery.' So I did the natural thing, I got up and strolled around the stage. I met Petrosian, made some joke to him, and he replied. But the 15 year old Fischer, who was essentially still only a large child, sat with a confused expression on his face, looking first at his second, and then at me. He then wrote down another move, Q-QB6+..." (And went on to lose.) "After the game, when I asked Fischer why he hadn't played QR-K1, he replied, "Well, you laughed when I wrote it down." "

@@sissyfist I think he meant that Fischer wrote it by using algebraic notation rather than descriptive notation (which was typical of english speaking countries). Most European countries would use algebraic in that time, but not Anglo-Saxon countries

I don't think Tal smiled at Fischer to psych him out. It was probably just a congratulatory smile for having found the best move that would defeat him. But Bobby, being unsure of himself, let himself get psyched out of making that best move. Hats off to Tal.

Its three hours since I saw this video, and I've been thinking about the smile and the Fischer's response. Given Tal, he smiled because he was happy for Fischer that Fischer found the right move. Given Fischer, he distrusted that the smile could have meant happiness for Fischer, and instead understood it as Tal laughing at him, and then played the wrong move. Tal smiled a lot, had a very easy and frequent smile. There are videos of him playing with Fischer and his glee at witnessing the game is abundant. It's actually sad; Fischer would have been lucky to have some of Tal's innocent emotionality.

So I switched to lichess and I have a rating of about 900 but I could see players on chess.com use engines all the time and I don’t even see the point of it.

Beside the chess stories, witch I really enjoy, this channel helped me improve my game. I'm not really responsive to chess lessons. I find those really boring. Instead I listened to these stories and what was most important to me, was that mr agadmador explained the approach one need to have while playing chess. The things you need to take in consideration. His perspective on chess was the real teacher, cause I understand now where I have to look to improve and how to more effectively tackle a chess game. Thanks!

You bring back memories about writing the move down b4 you move it. I never did it because it always stressed me out that my opponent could see it and gave him a few extra seconds thinking time each move, which would add up. And back then we used descriptive notation rather than algebraic (1. P-K4 ... instead of 1. e4 ...). Yep, I'm that old. /sigh

Hey! :) If you're gonna do a few games from the 1960 championship, please consider game eleven. Tal played the Reti as white and slowly bulldozered Botvinnik off the board, ending the game with a nice kingside assult. As I understand it, this game utterly crushed Botvinnik's spirit. Botvinnik could cope with loosing games like 1 and 6, two "typical Tal" madhouse efforts, and he had even rebounded to win games 8 and 9, bringing the score to a 2:3 and himself back in the match. With this momentum, Botvinnik was keen to overhaul the challenger. But to be so comprehensively positionally outplayed in the eleventh encounter left the champion visibly shaking and stunned immediately after the game. Botvinnik didn't win another game, despite having a few very favorable positions courtesy of Tal getting a little too adventurous from time to time.

Tal is the only USSR Chess master at those time whom got Fischer admission and respects through the heart. Simple, because Tal is reckless and fearless of any challenge. At the same time, their games give Fischer so much advantage to learn.

Bobby wasn’t talking about Tal when he told Dimitrije “If I don’t win against Smyslov tomorrow, I’ll cut off my ear” (Bjelica, Chess Meets of the Century, p. 118). But he did write “If Tal doesn’t behave himself, I am going to smash out all of his front teeth” in a letter to his mom (Marshall Chess Foundation Archive). Great game, super tactical, I like that one because it is full of prophylactic moves on both sides and it is helpful as a player to understand the importance of calculation to correctly find the correct move order, because even the greatest plan can fails if you mess up the move order.

This is the game number 17 on the book "my 60 memorable games". You should read some of the comments by Fischer when analyzing a game featured in this amazing book #suggestion

True. But for this game, he claims he had a win in this game, which wasn't the case. Books written in pre computer era are indeed very valuable, but can contain errors in calculations. No author was immune to this :)

I like that you feature a lot of awesome games, but aren't there awesome draws? Like someone pulled a few suboptimal moves in the midgame and pulled out a draw? The majority of chess games at the highest level are drawn but people get a false impresion about chess if you only show wins.(and man, I love awesome checkmates)
