Ten foreign players, including eight grandmasters, were invited to compete against six top Swiss players, including national champion Keller, at Zurich's Kongreßhaus. Among the grandmasters invited were Mikhail Tal and Paul Keres from the Soviet Union, Bobby Fischer from the United States, Svetozar Gligoric from Yugoslavia, Bent Larsen from Denmark, Wolfgang Unzicker from Germany, and Fridrik Olafsson from Iceland, five of whom participated in the world candidates tournament the same year. Although Tal viewed the tournament as a lesser event, it turned out to be closer than he would have expected. Although Tal easily defeated five of the six Swiss players, Edwin Bhend dealt the future world champion a blow in the first round. After dispatching his countrymen later in the tournament, Tal felt in fine form, but then lost again, this time at the hands of Gligoric, who would trail him only by half a point in the end. This was also a significant tournament for young Fischer. His play was already improving dramatically at international events against stronger opposition, and he came close to tying Tal in the final. Alas, a loss to the Swiss champion in the penultimate round cost Fischer a spot at the top and he had to settle for equal third with Keres. Tal won clear first with 11½ points out of 15 rounds.

I honestly think that some of it was just psychological warfare. Maybe that's why Keller didn't take that pawn at the end. Maybe his thought pattern was something like this: ~ A pawn isn't protected. I better not take it and sacrifice some of my pieces, maybe I will draw then. It's Tal after all.

It's because a correct response to Tals moves would destroy his strategy, but after a suboptimal countermove Stockfisch evaluates, that the optimal moves from that point won't stop Tals strategy.

After the Knight blocks the check by moving to b4, there is an elegant mate by Dc6+. The king is forced by check on d7 from a7 to b8 when Sc6 is mate. Check on e8 produces the same if king goes to b8 immediately. Blocking on c7 with the queen allows Dd5+ winning the rook. What a fascinating position. Poor Keller's head must have been bursting!

At 8:44 why not Bxb1? Black can get two rooks for a queen(...,Bxb1,Rxe5,fxe5) plus white's knight on b5 and bishop on g4 both are hanging so essentially black may get two rooks and a piece for his queen.

OK sorry about a rush decision for me to suggest. I guess Bf3 is the only good move after that fxe5 move. I'm not sure though I don't have a board with me so it's kinda complicated for me but after f4 I think Bg2 just to save the bishop though White will lose the initiative after that since there's not enough material aiming at the king after that. Lets say axb5,Qxb5+ after this White would have to play against two minor along with two rook with just a queen and a bishop although white can grab a few pawn it'll be hard to get back in the game since e7 pawn will go down without a fight too Summary: I agree with you

That Re5 got to me, made no since. You had to grap that past pawn and the game might have been very diffrent.

can you show the Keller Fischer game? Bobby Fischer loses so few of his games would be interested in seeing how Keller beat him

At 5:25 of the video, there is a better move than taking the black rook. What about playing night e6 and forking the black king and queen?
