I wonder if the reason we are able to inhabit a soul is because the person it belongs to has given up. Their determination to keep going is ours. Note that it's never stated WHY Frisk climbed the mountain, but it's entirely possible they meant to off themself. They don't take back control because they've already given up. In Pacifist, the game ends once they regain the will to live, their 'determination', or in the case of No Mercy, lose all hope entirely. However, in Deltarune it's more complex. Kris very well may be s**cidal, but also doesn't want to be controlled. It's also curious that we, the player, may be able to influence OTHER characters as well. I feel like Toby is setting up the puzzle pieces, and the end result will recontextualize our experience in Undertale.

Interesting observations, never thought of that, I always thought that we are able to control frisk because they are a young child, therefore relying on authority figures, while Kris is a teen. I talk more about Frisk's agency and personality in my previous video, if you're interested.

Even though the red soul being Determination isn't technically canon, I really like the idea of the souls being a color wheel and the traits connecting to each other, I don't think I've ever seen that theory but it makes so much sense This channel really deserves more subs too

In the ball game (snowdin area) i believe red describe as "being your self" thing. Every human soul has determination, but some theories said that GOLD is represent Determination in general.

"Kris" is likely a reference to both frisk and Chara. Kris's name combines the "CH" sound in "chara" and the "ris" sound in "frisk". Personally i think that all three humans have independant values and characteristics, and that they do not want to be "good" or "evil". Toby's games let the player choose what happens, and the player is the one responsible for making frisk kill, and chara appear 'evil'. Although in deltarune, kris seems to have had enough of being forced to do things they do not want to do, and take matters into their own hands.

Commenting on the differences between the presumed two speakers at 18:12 - Sans also differs in font from time to time. He does so when threatening you in the date with him, in most judgement hall scenes, and right before fighting you in genocide. - Same goes for this point, as Sans does stop speaking in all lowercase in the previously mentioned instances. Even more so with the threat he gives you in the date with him. He speaks *much* slower, with more spacing between the letters. - The different Japanese speaking styles can be explained away as being that way because they're different speaking styles in general. I think you could make the argument that the speaker here switches speaking styles to sound more intimidating, not necessarily to indicate a different character. - I'm pretty sure the lack of background is meant to indicate that you got kicked out of the vessel making sequence, not necessarily that there's another speaker here. - We don't know for a fact what the intent was behind making us create a vessel. For all we know, discarding it was part of the plan. It's not impossible that there's a second speaker, we just shouldn't be sure of it yet. Also, I'm pretty sure determination is more of a force rather than a trait. Unlike the other six traits, it's the only force that we know for a fact other humans are capable of harnessing. Flowey's determination was stated to be taken from the other six fallen humans. It was a physical substance Alphys took from the six human souls in order to inject both Flowey and the amalgamates with it. All this is to say that determination seems to be much different from the traits listed in Ball Game. Speaking of Ball Game, if you win it in under 6 seconds more than once, you get the following prompt: "RED - Try as you might, you continue to be yourself." Considering the other colored flags prompted you with information on the other six humans' traits or personalities, perhaps this could be a hint as to what the red soul truly means.

Fair points, as I said in the video, "I do believe that there are 2 different speakers"- the theory is strenghtened, but not made by that interpretation alone Again, as I said, just because the main trait of a soul is, for example, kindness, does not mean that they can't be brave or patient. Same with determination - it is a physical substance, but it is also used as an adjective, I believe by Sans and Undyne. A good synonym for determination(as used in game) would be resilience- a psychological concept describing the adaptability of the mind- the thing described in the ball game.

Good point, but I'd like to add an argument in favor of two speakers: Before you finish Chapter 1, the main menu is clearly operated by Gaster because the save selection menu's narrator speaks in the same way as he did during the goner maker sequence. Once you've viewed the end cutscene, the save selection menu's narration changes to regular text. This implies two different speakers because this isn't just a change to emphasize a dramatic moment, but straight up an entire menu changing permanently.

It's being hyped up as a big reveal by so many things in the games (Hiding the trait's meaning, it being able to seal fountains, Gaster literally summoning it, Kris taking it out, the Librarby book on souls). I'm so hyped to finally learn what trait it possesses!!

Great video! One thing about the intro sequence is that the image used in the background is called IMAGE_DEPTHS, or something like that. One of Jevil's lines is "Hell's roar bubbles from the depths," which in my opinion means the dark fountains are the depths leaking darkness out. IMAGE_DEPTHS, if you turn it upside down, is also just rippling water. I dunno what to make of this stuff, but it's just cool.

One of my really wacky ideas is that that the "depths" are really just the underground that is empty in the universe of Deltarune - where magic is still present and it is obviously dark, being not populated. But that is just my weird speculation ;)

It's extremely probable every human could save and load. File0 is created when you use a save point. File9 is an auto-save at hidden points. File8 is created when Flowey gets the 6 human souls, AND his save file back, so it is probable for it to be his file. During his fight, he uses files 2 and 3 to save and load. Therefore, files 2 to 7 are the human soul's. File8 is Flowey's, File9 is Frisk's and File1 is Chara's. I think file0 is probably our save, since it's used when WE save, while file9 would be Frisk's. It's shown through Photoshop Flowey that in-game characters saving can save whenever they want. But the files alone are pretty shaky evidence, that theory is also supported by in-game evidence: After you reset, Toriel remembers your preference between butterscotch or cinammon and says this: " *When humans fall down here, strangely... I... I often feel like I already know them.* Truthfully, when I first saw you, I felt... ... like I was seeing an old friend for the first time." Not only does she say that she feels like she already knows them, but she states it in contrast to the déjà-vu she is getting from your reset. You can tell Asgore he has killed you, and depending on the number of times you've died to him, he gives you different dialogue. "You tell ASGORE that he's killed you (1-4 ) times before. He nods sadly. " "You tell ASGORE that he's killed you (5-9) times. He nods grievously." "You tell ASGORE that he's killed you too many times to count. He nods pitifully." He is unfazed by this, like this isn't the first time he has heard of this. Maybe you aren't the first child to tell him you've died to him.

Interesting observations. While I think that Flowey accessing files2 and 3 in battle murks the waters a bit, it is curious to think about that file0 is the one that you need to edit in order to cheat the game. I knew about those scenes with the Dreemurs, it would be cool to think that the previous humans were able to save and load like we do, but I'm not sure about the logistical issues that may arise from it.

@@tanyas. I think it makes more sense for them to be able to than not, considering every human has DETERMINATION. Hell, the DT Flowey has comes from the human souls. Small note, in the genocide route "Chara" quotes themselves from right after they awoke in Frisk's body. "Why was I brought back to life?"... Not "how", but "why". It's a small detail that could mean nothing but it's interesting nonetheless. Also, if Narrachara is true (Which is almost canon considering the staggering amount of evidence), then they show no surprise at the idea of saving, they're even the first person to mention DT ingame.

The evidence I've already shown (especially the Toriel one, it's basically her directly stating the previous humans could also save) points towards it.

I wonder, since SOUL is usually capitalized like LOVE and EXP, if it’s an acronym just like LOVE and EXP. One example I can think of is Spirit Of Under-Lying (power). That’s the best one I can think of that also makes sense lol. Edit: Another theory I just thought of is the trait of the red soul could actually be “Control.” It lines up with Patience, Bravery, Kindness, Integrity, and Justice. Since Justice seems to parallel how the soul works in battle (Being able to shoot like a Sheriff) Control would make sense since you can move freely in all 4 directions. Not only that, but you also have control over the different weapons and items you choose, meanwhile each soul is associated with only their specific armor and weapons. Control also makes sense cause… It’s under your control… This ended up being way longer than it needed to be.

It's worth noting that only Asriel's shirt is green and yellow. Chara's isn't, that's just a fan interpretation. Chara's shirt is more lime colored and has a cream colored striped shirt.

Interesting points (Very, very, interesting, if you will) however my personal interpretation of "Let's erase this pointless world and move on to the next one" is more along the lines of "Ok, game completed, let's go play the next one!" And that next game COULD be Deltarune, but it could also be Ace Attorney, Dynasty Warriors, Omori, Splatoon... this doesn't necessarily disprove or support your interpretation since mine would also imply that the next game you're gonna play more than just one game and Deltarune could be one of them, and regardless of if it's the next game you play or the 327th after (Yes I used that number on purpose, if you know, you know) Deltarune knows it is one of those games because, well... you're playing it, but I do believe this is something to consider.

Could you please take a look at the 00:37 mark? I explicitly said that I'm referring to both Chara the human and the demon. There is not a great deal of evidence regarding the extent to which the human is "evil", but they are directly characterized by Asriel as not being a good person- they laugh at Asgore's pain, they encourage Asriel to not express his emotions, they try to manipulate him into killing humans... Yes, they are a child who probably didn't have a great upbringing given their suicidal tendencies- but, from the little we know from the person who always stuck by their side (Asriel), they were not heading into a good direction in terms of morals. When talking about the Geno route, I clearly made the distinction between Chara and what is left of them after their supposed reincarnation - and I don't think I need to explain why that being/ghost/essence/demon thing can be characterized as evil. Maybe it is just Chara's spirit without the soul, with only their bad parts left, maybe its something else. Either way, there is no smoke without fire. I hope this doesn't come off as mean-spirited, I know tone and intention can get lost in the text and I don't mean to insult or attack anyone.

While I do personally believe that Narrachara makes a lot of sense, I cannot sit here and tell others that it is confirmed, as that would be misinformation. We know that Chara(the human) hated humanity, manipulated Asriel into killing humans, encouraged him to not show emotions ("big kids don't cry"), laughed when Asgore got sick, and Asriel describes them as "not that great of a person". Yes, they are a child, who presumably had suicidal tendencies, so probably not the best upbringing. But children can be mean and cruel as well, even if they don't fully comprehend it. What remains of them at the end of Geno may be only the more negative side of them, or their amplified traits, but there is no smoke without fire.

@@tanyas. The laughing is not a point at all. Laughter as a coping mechanism to tragedy is a motif in Undertale. The Snowdrakes are a good example. Toriel laughing at her death during genocide too. Chara was probably not laughing out of sadism at poisoning Asgore. There is no real evidence that Chara was sadistic like you claimed in the video actually. Yes, the fallen child was probably mean, hateful and generally a bad person willing to take vengeance on humanity for their upbringing. But there is no proof any of that was done in terms of sadism. In fact, Chara is proven to *not* be sadistic if we follow the demon. The demon is confused by us doing a second genocide and clearly finds no pleasure in the murder and torture itself. What it enjoys is the power but that's not sadism. Also, Chara was probably totally real with Asriel and not manipulating him. There is enough evidence for Chara still hating themselves and humanity enough to want to kill themselves while also using that to take revenge on humanity but it was also probably done in the name of liberating monster kind and fulfilling the prophesy. Now this isn't a defense of what they still ultimately wanted to do but in the end, Chara is more of a misguided child that was probably abused than a sadistic villain.

Ok, maybe sadistic wasn't the best word to use. I also acknowledged their probable abuse and compiled the evidence supporting their villain arc in this comment thread. All the things combined point to the thing that even you acknowledged- Chara is hateful, mean and a bad person. The laughing argument is only a snippet of the argument at large and when taken together with the encouragement of Asriels emotions, shows that it is not an involuntary coping mechanism, but a conscious one. I didn't deny the fact that they are a probably traumatised child, nor did I imply that they (the human) are the embodiment of evil- I explicitly stated that in the video ("I don't necessarilybelieve that they are only good or evil, but that their representativeendigs hint at that dichotomy"). And yes, Chara is a villain = " a character whose evil actions or motives are important to the plot". Either way, the point that I made in the video is not "Chara is a sadist", but "Kris differs in personality and intentions from Chara, who is mean-spirited". Sorry for not using a more appropriate word to describe them, but my point still stands.

Though in Undertale I always thought the dichotomy was the angel (of hopes and dreams) Asriel and the angel (of death) Chara but as far as Kris and Deltarune are concerned I completely agree that Kris is the yin and yang that combines Frisk and Chara.

Ok, this video is amazing, and I love that you had the courage and ability to compile and edit all this information, but there is one detail that you pointed out that I disagree with. Around 12:16, you said that: "There is one key aspect I think is intentional; "let us erase this pointless world and move on to the next" Well, the next world could mean another Undertale timeline..." I don't think that is true. After two genocide runs, Chara says: "This SOUL resonates with a strange feeling. There is a reason you continue to recreate this world. There is a reason you continue to destroy it. You. You are wracked with a perverted sentimentality. Hmm. I cannot understand these feelings anymore." It's a small detail, but I feel like it is wildly important to this conversation. I do not know if you address this later in the video, because as soon as I heard that I paused the game, looked up dialogue, and wrote this comment. Bottom line is, I am really happy that I found this video, and thank you for making it.

While this is an interesting interpretation and theory... and has some good points, I don't agree with the red soul being called the determination soul. It's stated in the true lab that all human souls have determination in them. You've probably already addressed this in the comments before though.

My interpretation was based on the assumption that a soul's defining trait determines its color/properties. Just because someone's soul is defined first by patience, it doesn't mean that it cannot be kind or brave. The same thing could apply to the red soul.

I think from what Toby said, considering there will only be ONE ending, the things we do to lead up to the ending, the routes to choose.. it won't matter. In the grand scheme of things, we can't change the inevitable ending that will occur, no matter what choices we make. I believe what it is saying is that your choices do have effect, but it won't change the outcome.

Kris does not distance ralsei, they just aren’t close to him ralsei tea still heals them but just not as much as Susie and if I remember ralsei tea only heals 10 less than noelles who kris has an estranged, friendship with

There are multiple instances in which ralsei is dismissive/upset about kris's feelings (Post-spamton battle, Susie imagination exercises, acid photoshoot) in favor of the player's enjoyment. Subtle hints that Kris is distant towards ralsei are sprinkled throughout the game, especially in ch2- there is a bit of tension between them. Notice that I used "apparent" and "may have" in the sentence, because it is still up to interpretation the extent to which kris is weary of ralsei.
