Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I'm a Premiere user and I'm trying DVR. I have a problem: I need to replace a clip on the timeline with another (whether it is longer or shorter), maintaining exactly the duration of the clip on the timeline which therefore must function as a fixed container. I noticed that if I "replace" on a clip between two others (which work a bit like a "wall"), everything is ok but if the clip is on the timeline but without other nearby clips, its length changes based on the new one clip that I choose replace in with "replace". I hope I explained myself! In Premiere what I want to do is possible. K
@Chris.Roberts
@Chris.Roberts 9 ай бұрын
Hi. The Replace edit in Resolve works the same whether you have one clip or multiple clips in your timeline as it's always performed around the playheads in the source and timeline. You'll have to excuse me as I haven't used Premiere Pro properly in some time, and I'm not 100% sure the issue you're describing, but I think this is the same as Premiere's "Replace with Clip > From Source Monitor, Match Frame" command. As far as I'm aware Resolve doesn't have the equivalent of Premiere's "Alt-Dragging" a new clip to replace an existing clip or the "Replace with Clip > From Source Monitor" which I believe does use the In point set in the source (though this would be nice). To achieve the same result, you'd set your timeline playhead at the first frame of the clip to replace and the source playhead at the frame where you want the new clip to start (no In point required), then click the Replace Clip button. It's a similar function, just a slightly different execution. I'm not sure if this addresses the issue, but I hope it helps a little?

@@Chris.Roberts Hello and thank you so much for your time! I'm doing some tests and I noticed that by creating a new timeline (even in the same project with the problematic one - or if I create a new project), everything seems to work as it should. If, however, I go back to the other timeline, the same operations fail and the replacement creates strange effects (for example, the new clip that I replace with the one present on the timeline changes its duration and therefore its extension on the timeline, creating chaos). Is there a way to compare the characteristics of the two timelines in order to find the problem? Or could it be a DVR bug? Anyway, thanks a lot :) I'm using Davinci Resolve 18.6.6 (build 7) in Win10 Pro x64

Another great tutorial. It's always interesting who sets what priorities. While it was particularly important to MrAlex Tech that attributes are placed on the new clip (this is where drag and drop replacement within the timeline makes sense, with the control key pressed), it's all about matching here. A small note at 4:01, the scene is not cut to beat, but adapted to a different frame.
@Chris.Roberts
@Chris.Roberts Жыл бұрын
Indeed... there are so many different ways to edit of course, it's just choosing the most efficient! I would also add that at 4:01 I use the phrase "aligned to the beat" not "cut to the beat", but your comment is very much appreciated 😉

Was hoping you could show tool / menu options vs F11 or F12, etc. For those of us who don't know / remember the keyboard shortcuts. Hi Chris! Thank for doing these tutorials. They're very helpful! I have one issue with the replace edit tool that I cannot find a solution for ANYWHERE online. Whenever I use the replace edit EXACTLY as you've showed it, the clip in my source viewer will overwrite the entire timeline rather than the selected clip. I've tried adding one in point, tried adding an in and out point, made sure the video track was highlighted, all in vain. Your help would immensely appreciated as I cannot figure this out. Thank you.
@Chris.Roberts
@Chris.Roberts 10 ай бұрын
Hey! Have you tried *not* adding in or out points in the timeline? By default the Replace edit will use the duration of the clip under the playhead on the targeted track(s). When you add in and out points you're specifying the portion you want replacing... Just a thought and maybe worth a try?

Do you mean using still images created using the speed change? If so, once the still is created in the timeline, drag it to the Media Pool to add it. You'll then be able to open it in the source and use Replace. HTH.

I suspect the Replace function is one of the more difficult for a relative newbie, that would be me. Yes, still me. Nearing 78, my learning speed is not what it once was. I recognized the airplane clips as coming from official training materials, but found what you were trying to do was not clear. Also, your explanation was unclear, raising a lot of questions. To be fair, I did find myself asking “should I know that already?”. Probably yes, but I didn’t know about positioning the cursor in the two viewers. Now that I think of it, did you ever say you were in the cut page or edit page and does it matter? Sometimes you would say to press F11 or something, but never say why. This is an instant trigger for me to get distracted about “yet another KZbinr who doesn’t realize or care that I don’t know or have forgotten what that key does”. By that time, you have moved on and I likely missed something. The later part of your video was somewhat better, but complex for someone who has never used time codes. “Can you actually do that, replace timecodes?”. Another distraction. Tell them what you’re going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you told them. Old advice, stolen by me. I’d add: Don’t forget to tell them why!”. I suspect I will watch this video again, but I still don’t have confidence I will recognize a situation where I should use it. I suspect this was just too advanced for me and I should have passed on it.
@Chris.Roberts

Thanks for this comment. I'm sorry to hear you didn't find this video useful. To be honest, it might be worthwhile to rewatch the video again and see if any parts of it *might* be relevant for you... One of the things I like about online tutorial videos is the ability to rewatch sections I'm not too clear on the first time I watch. I also take a good deal of time creating detailed subtitles (English only at the moment), so you may find it beneficial to watch with the subs on if you're not already, I find it helps to clarify what's being said - especially as I have a rather specific British accent! 😁 In my videos, and training in general, I do try and explain things for a variety of audiences. I usually start with a simple explanation of why you *may* need to use something and build to more complex examples, often only relevant to people with specific experience and needs. Of course, not every step is applicable to everyone and I appreciate you may question why you may need to know something - such as why timecode are important. If that's the case, and you don't see a reason to use the feature, then arguably the subject is not relevant to you and that's perfectly valid. Regarding the F11 comment, this is just the keyboard shortcut for Replace that you can use instead of clicking a button. I usually provide a list of keyboard shortcuts used in the description below the video, though you might not be aware of that, unless you read the description of course. Ultimately, not every video will please everyone all of the time, though I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Thanks for the feedback.

@@Chris.Roberts Thanks for the detailed reply. I liked the white space and structure. I will investigate Replace further, and will rewatch the video afterwards. I envy those of your viewers who can watch it once, say “got it” and then start using it. Right now, that’s not me. Very linear me. I presume the clip that is replaced is still in the source bin and there is not a position swapping of clips. You might have said that, don’t remember. As I said, I think I’m not where I need to be to use this function. Likely would not have enough clips to face making a choice. What I think I did gain was an appreciation that Resolve is powerful and replacing a clip might entail editing sound as well, with some tricky bits included. So, hopefully I did get more out of it than either of us originally thought. At the very least, I’m appreciating more the talents of professional editors. Always a treat to see good work procedures.

It makes no sense Chris to sensor comments here. By the way I was doing yours last Davinci Course a simultan translation for those that do not speak and understand any English. The discussion arround this appears heavy inside Facebook now. Because it was not possible to repeat just the multicam edit and give space for a training I just ask, who is this workshop made for? For the trainers or the beginners. Blackmagic brings with each version new features and so there is no space anymore to run the full program the same time. By the way it happens that the Zoom connection was lost for 2 Minutes because Zoom did an unsecured routing of the stream. I did stop it after the multicam edit part. This was just by Daniela mentioned. The old very good concept of the trainings is outdated. As well that users in general do not accept the Blackmagic cloud.
