Price versus cost. We Americans, and Western culture as a whole, places all value on getting the best price, spending the least money, and so we don't think at all about HOW or WHY that item ended up for sale at such a low price. We merely congratulate ourselves at getting the best deal, something reinforced and edified in our popular culture. Tenki, Professor, for reminding us that the cost of an item (the how it got to us) is equally if not more important than the price. The cost to the environment, our mother earth, as we whittle away at diversity and move toward total destruction. The cost to the creatures enslaved in misery to feed and protect us. The cost to our fellow human beings, our human family, as governments, as well as consumers, choose profit over morality and ethics. We are focused only on our intention (to get the best deal and have the newest doo-dah) and never ever on our impact (the inhumanity of large-scale animal farming, of enslavement and/or genocide of peoples from "other" places, the immorality of big business lifting profit above all else). It is so hard to have hope.

Fuck, I'm so desensitised. I have next to no emotional reaction to hearing about acts of brutality and violence, and that isn't even a new development. Sometimes it feels like I only care on a rational level, because there is just too much awfulness to have an emotional reaction to. I don't even know what to do about this 'conflict'. I have no money, no influence. My government and everyone in it doesn't care and made that position clear before the invasion. Outside of an election cycle they don't care how many people protest or petition them, they won't budge on anything. Even then they probably won't. I feel more powerless to help than ever because none of the avenues I've used to help before work anymore. I just sit here while people die.

Sometimes it's better to take a step back from all of this for your own mental health, there's nothing wrong with that. You do what you can for them and then do what you can for yourself and if that means tuning out for a while to recharge then do it. The only person you have control over is yourself.

I suppose you're both right. A lot of what is happening in the world is a culmination of events long in the making that we already collectively failed to prevent. War that nobody wins is exactly what we predicted and that is what we've got. That's not my fault specifically, but I still feel responsible for what can be done now or later. You have a pen, paper, stamp and literacy skills. You have a device that types, internet and literacy skills. You may have a telephone, a voice, mouth and tongue. Use all the skills and resources listed you do have to look up your local representatives from local government to federal gov't or however this may coincide with the country you are from. Inundate your representatives and Head of State with your opinion and Tell them (whether you believe you will or will not) will primary them or vote for an opposition to them that aligns more with you than they do if they support or vote for _______ actions or lack of _______ actions to whichever cause you believe in down to your bones. They will/ should react based on their constituents. If they live in an ech chamber it is our responsibility to tell them what those of us they represent want and for our voices to be larger and stronger than the opposition and lobbyists they hear from and meet with every day. Get those you know that feel the same to do the same. The telephone and pen are mighty strong persuaders for elected officials. Never forget.

@@aredape I've been doing that with amnesty international and on my own accord, that is how I know they don't care. I live in Australia, so my governments foreign policy has nothing to do with lobby groups or the opposition. The foreign policy stems entirely from the US and UK governments, and the last time a Aus government tried to break from that it resulted in a coup. Not many people know this but Australia isn't a full democracy and is an outright police state. In recent years it has become illegal to protest, unionise or even criticise the government, to be determined at their discretion of course. The current govt has become notorious for refusing to budge under public pressure and have simply stopped listening to their electorates. There currently is no democratic power in Australia, all avenues of peaceful resistance have been denied.
