The price of freedom and the proverbial American Dream have been paid by the shedding of blood for almost 250 years. Is it worth it?
Few people are able to answer that question from the same vantage point as Jennie Taylor. She is a Gold Star widow whose husband, US Army Major Brent Taylor, was killed in action in Afghanistan on November 3, 2018, leaving her behind to raise their SEVEN young children on her own.
Through a series of questions, Jennie leads the audience to the point of having to ask themselves the same question she has been asking herself everyday-"Is it worth it?”
Setting politics aside, Jennie guides the audience to the point of self-reflection as to whether or not patriotism is alive -and the powerful follow up question of “Who gets to decide?”
Jennie Taylor is a proud native of North Ogden, Utah. She has a bachelor’s degree from BYU and a Master of Education from Utah State University. Jennie, and her husband Brent, share a deep devotion to God, Family and Country. This commitment led to 15 years of military service for Brent, including four deployments to the Middle East. Brent served on the North Ogden City Council for four years, and as Mayor of North Ogden for five years. Brent and Jennie are the proud parents of seven children, ages 2 to 14.
In January of 2018, Brent left his position as Mayor and was called to serve in Afghanistan with the US Army for a year-long deployment. On November 3, 2018 Major Taylor was killed in action. Since Brent's shocking death, Jennie has become a voice for the price of freedom, the value of community support, and healing that can be found in spite of life's heartache and pain. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Jennie, this is perfect. I hate to admit that I really struggle with my patriotism. But the call to greatness in honor of our nation’s fallen is something I can relate to and carry out. Every time I’m tempered to be apathetic, I will think about this and about families like yours. Such a universal message. Beautiful job.

The conflict in Afghanistan had nothing to do with 'freedom.' Her husband died as a pawn of a military industrial complex.

It's a very sad story. The few real power sit comfortably and pass orders. Wars are fought at whose expenses ? Thank you, bless you. All your dreams come true.

Why is the moon landing so glorified? I think it's a bigger achievement just getting into space first. It was called the "space race" after all
