Zack and Cloud were in the tubes for 4 years. It took them almost one year to get near Midgar. That's why Cloud said to Tifa in Remake he hasn't seen her in 5 years. Zack died in late September and ff7 started in December.

I just realized that Zack's fight with the infantrymen lasts longer in CC than it does in Remake. He fought for longer in CC because it was raining when he was dead, but in Remake he was already leaving with Cloud BEFORE it even started; the Remake fight must've had less people sent for it to have ended sooner.

This. They were in the tanks and experimented on for almost all that time. That’s why cloud had such a severe case of Mako poisoning and was basically doing his best Weekend at Bernie’s impression for the last part of the game. They were on the run for months. I’ve read anywhere from 2 to 10, but I’m not sure if it’s just speculation.

18:40 I'm thinking more like being experimented on for most of those 4 years. I don't think he would lose track of time THAT much to be so surprised by it. That would take some AINI Ryuki level of brain damage. Also, if it's 4 years on the run that would also mean that Coma-Cloud was just carried around for 4 years with no recovery.

I do think there is a possibility that Aerith not being at the church is because she left for Kalm, not to show that specifically, but to show Zack's shock and confusion that she isn't there, that the flowers are torn up, and people are distressed. All signs something bad has happened since she always took care of the flowers and others. Like you said, disaster happened in Midgar, but Zack wouldn't be aware of it if he was suddenly brought back because Cloud and friends defeated Destiny

That's the perfect summary there. As a fan of the OG, my favorite parts of CC are the one with things from there but not the Angeals the Holanders and the Genesis 🤣. Also the pain and the tragedy of the end with Zack and his closest people. Other than that, what I'm glad is that it gives you some more questions of some people's deal because that'll make Rebirth more enjoyable without the need to know the details before, that's fun!

I think what people feared most, besides the Zack scene at the end, was that this title (if you have the info the Remake gives you well present) can answer several of the questions you posed thus ruining your enjoyment when Rebirth will inevitably bring these interrogatives up. Anyway, enjoyed your playthrough. Crisis Core is definetly a game of it's era, and is quite divisive for those same elements you cited. The original FF7 was also quite goofy in places, but translating that type of humor (done with limited assets and no voice acting) is not always an easy thing to do in a more modern title.

Zack wasnt on the run for 4 years he was in the test tubes with Cloud for that long. Thats why Tifa isnt surprised that Cloud "made" it in soldier cuz he was hidden for so long and had the soldier outfit which Zack gave him and the mako eyes because of all the tests that were done to him which is why he was a complete mess.

As dumb as this game is, Zack is wonderful all the way through. This guy is stuck with the worst anime theater kid on the planet as an antagonist, and put in unsalvageable situations over and over, yet still he makes the most of it. He seems honest and cocky and loving in every interaction.

Yes, there is still a very short but important gap of time between Cloud arriving at Midgar, and the start of og FF7/Remake, so its ok to still be confused as to how exactly this ending leads up to the start of that game, particularly concerning Cloud's mental state, which suffice to say, is a complete mess after everything that happened in Crisis Core. All those things are explained in og FF7, so I expect the remake to do so as well. Great playthrough, I hope you enjoyed it.

It's amazing that you went into this completely unspoilered! Not only that, but expecting a different outcome thanks to Remake, it makes the reaction so much better! You can imagine how those players who grew up crying over CC's ending, fighting Shinra troopers for hours trying to change fate, must have felt watching the Remake's ending lol This is not a spoiler cause it was mentioned in the Remake but the localization simply butchered that part, but there's very little time between CC ending and 7's beginning, a matter or days or at most weeks. What's fascinating about playing this without OG is that one won't *know* what was spoiled for them by this game until these problems are put before them, and it will be so interesting to see how Rebirth goes about it or even *if* it goes about it. And to see if you'll catch what was the deal there! Also, if anyone tries to act like they know what's going on with Zack coming back and will try to judge your theories, don't listen to them, literally *no one* knows what is happening, old or new hahaha I would still recommend to at least rewatch Remake cutscenes for fun while CC is still fresh on your mind, because there is SO MUCH that will either become clearer or will gain a whole new meaning now, especially in scenes between Cloud and Tifa or Cloud and Aerith!

36:30 As I understand it the remake isn't even a remake but a sequel with some time loop / parallel dimension shenanigans going on. In the original timeline Zack apparently does die, which makes him being alive in remake a huge deal. Alot of people seem to hate that remake does things differently, but I (also not knowing the original) think it's quite clever. That way you can't know what's going to happen even if you know the original and if they do their job well we get 2 good versions of the game. Just an extra route. They might even be able to then do an actual remake/remaster of the original route aswell.

Yeah, most of the fans agree that Genesis/Angeal aren't why we played Crisis Core back in the day lol. We just wanted more Zack/Sephiroth/Cloud, and a look at the Nibelheim incident, so you're right on point with only caring about that stuff. A lot of my interest in this was if they would allude to anything that's specifically Remake lore, but this is very faithful to the original CC aside from the feel of combat. The combat in this remaster feels pretty different from the OG (combat in the OG was kind of dated/bad which is why they changed it), so that's the reason I bothered buying it. It's not my favorite gameplay of the year, but with the context of the original CC it made me enjoy the game more than I ever did before.

Thank you for the LP and kudos for enduring the character that is Genesis :D I honestly dont have much hope that the whole Zack surviving thing will be used to say anything profound in the end of Rebirth (or part 3), because we are still looking at Nomura writing these games. They could make an interesting scene if they made the characters meet up at a very specific point (after that other very specific point). Like. If there are 2 Clouds running around in the same timeline now, that would make things really weird is what Im saying.

I don't think there's a way for someone to appreciate whether it was really a spoiler or not without a) seeing what either the OG/Rebirth "reveals" and considering whether the dramatic impact was lessened and b) trying it once in one order and once in the other, which is of course impossible. So you'll never really know. I will say, I think there are some more direct "wait what?"s she hasn't had that new players might if they compare certain direct statements in Remake to what she saw in CC, so perhaps it's for the best new players' memories may have gotten a little hazy between Remake and CC. In any case, what's done is done.

The Remake's alternate past/present/future is hypothesized that because Cloud and friends defeated the collective Whisper being Destiny, they've changed their futures and pasts - ie. Zack didn't die this time. The common debate however is that no one can tell if Zack being alive is a separate timeline altogether and they'll still never meet, or if it's the same one and he'll meet back up with Cloud and Aerith at some point. Because that flashback in Remake where Cloud and Aerith pass Cloud and Zack could mean either it's just a flashback to the now edited past, or it could mean these timelines are coexisting side by side but can't interact. So the parts you played through in Remake where Aerith talks about a former love happened before Destiny was defeated, before the characters effectively edited their timeline. And the idea of a second Buster Sword could be a glitch result of the group having played with time. See because looking again at the end of Intermission, you commented that the disaster happened there too at the church But! The disaster of that area and when Zack died in Crisis Core originally don't line up time wise. Cloud was with Avalanche already when all the shit started happening in Midgar. This supports the possibility that Zack has returned in present day only. Because Aerith not being at the church would be because, as seen at the end of Remake, she leaves Midgar with the group. Or like you said, she could be in an entirely different timeline. (I love your playthrough though by the way!!)

One thing I liked about Crisis Core when I played it on the PSP was that you could completely abuse the fusion mechanic to utterly break the game, which is a thing I enjoy. The final storybosses would be complete pushovers, but there are missions that go insanely way beyond that, including an absurd superboss that is great thing for people who like the combat system of Crisis Core.

13:25 - "Who is that?" Unless something is _heavily_ rewritten, you won't see this "person" again. You can get some hints in the M9-6 questline, but these missions are much, much harder than any storyline battles. This being is called Minerva and is something something manifestation of lifestream itself. 54:04 - "If you gave me a choice ..." They _did_ update the gameplay. Originally DMW was noteably more annoying and the combat as a whole much less fluid.

Good lord I am trying to imagine an even worse DMW and I just...can't... I don't know which is worse, the direct UI distractingness of it, the gating of important story points behind it, or the amount of effort spent developing a convoluted system to mask a simple "random s*** happens in combat" concept.

You know, Genesis gets a bad rap but, and this is just a theory, he was right. My theory was that those pedastals that hade Loveless on them are how they found the poem / play and is why the 5 act is missiong. Genesis basically treated it like the Bible and at the end of the game he's healed and meets the Goddess. Spoiler for later Missions: But you can actually fight the Goddess you see in Genesis' cutscene. Supposedly she is the will of the Lifestream / Planet. But that's outside the game theory.

My theory is that your first assumption that the Zack fight in remake is happening simultaneously is kind of right ? As in, that things keep looping in different timelines, and the whispers attempt to keep it the way it was in the OG FF7. Thus the "we can change it" Aerith says in Remake (she does seem to have some knowledge about the multiple timelines things).
@jerodast
@jerodast 2 ай бұрын
The whispers in a shell over Midgar implies Zack's showdown happens at the same time as the finale of FF7R, but the fact that in any timeline this is when Cloud would be FIRST returning to Midgar implies it's happening beforehand. I first saw the intercutting at the end of FF7R as another implication of (parallel) simultaneity, but in retrospect it's maybe ambiguous if it's a "flashback". Sooo gave up on that and now about to dive into Rebirth to find out haha. It would be weird if not only there are multiple timelines but also a "stitch" in one of them, where events don't even line up in parallel...

Also yeah. The ending of this game is why people freaked out when Zack is apparently still alive dragging himself and Cloud to Midgar at the end of FF7R. Also the whole point of FF7R was the group was messing around with fate. That things are distinctly different now than in the past games. It's VERY Meta to say the least. That because of the in game characters messing around with fate, the past games events have in fact changed. The original FF7 and Crisis Core events have been changed to some extent and sometimes in a big way.

Great playthrough! I'm so glad you are now on the same page as us with reference points. The popular belief is that this is an alternate timeline.... Another point of view is this... remember when Cloud and company went into that portal that Aerith created at the end of Remake? I wonder if they crossed over into THIS (Zack is Alive) timeline? My recommendation is that you play the classic Original Game from the 90's. It will really give you a bigger perspective. As far as timing goes, Playing OG FF7 will help clear up what's going on with Cloud. I would say, most people were expecting remake to be an exact retelling of OG FF7 however, I do think the FF7 Remake series is a new game series. Either way, this was the best play through yet! Thanks for sharing your experience with us! As far as the remaster updating: I agree with you 100% This game could have had a 100% foundation update. Either way, this was great fun! Can't wait to see the next game! Cheers!

It won't be apparent how Crisis Core spoils the original story (and presumably part of the Remake story) until you actually see what happens in Rebirth or the one after that (unless they completely change it). But I agree, Crisis Core isn't great. It's just crowd-pleasing for people already obsessed with the universe. The original game is way more artful and substantive storytelling (still a bad localization, though).

Remake's Zach is from a different dimension, since we see Shinra's propaganda dog is a different breed in the world Zach is in, as opposed to the one you actually play the game in. Or basically, THIS is what is supposed to happen, before the Whispers got offed. And yes, there are implications that Sephiroth can travel dimensions, but I'm not gonna even _begin_ to touch that iceberg, because then we have to talk about him and Kingdom Hearts and...yeah, not touching that.

The difference in quality between CC Reunion and Remake is all because Reunion is absolutely an old PSP game - with the same script, the same (then unvoiced) dialogue and exaggerated character movement that is meant to overcompensate for said lack of voice, the same direction, the same gameplay sans combat, basically everything is the same taken from an old handheld console with a new paint on it and now fully voice acted. In essence it's still very much the same old PSP game, just a bit prettier. Meanwhile the Remake is a completely new game from the ground up - new graphics, gameplay, script, a lot of story, dialogue, character movement taken from actual motion capture actors - basically everything is a brand new game with all the modern sensibilities and technical abilities. It's kinda impossible to compare the two as equal entities because they're practically games from different generations and consoles.

I have a strong feeling that FF7R Part 2 might depart from the OG, as we get some crazy cutscenes on Zack here. Maybe they are trying to get Crisis Core to fit better with FF7R? The timing of this remake and the fact that nothing has been changed at the last part.... idk man, ma hed herts lol For the last part in CC, I think Cloud waking up right at the end is sort of like a passing of the torch from Zack to Cloud. I really liked it, FF7R is very dear to my heart from your LP and this has re-ignited the flame. Loved it, really loved it. I cannot wait to watch (and maybe play this time??) FF7R2.

It's not bad to say that the dialogues didn't age well. They're cheesy and a bit cringy, but I appreciate that they become more serious the closest we get to the Nibelheim incident (and it makes sense, since that, as you said, is also the focal part of the original main game and it had much better dialogue) Crisis Core is a remaster, so they just wanted to make it look more appealing, but the dialogues are 90% the same. Remake, though, doesn't just update things, they totally adapted and expanded things, to the point it becomes a stand-alone game. Except for the most iconic scenes, all the dialogues in Remake are completely new and even entire chapters (like chapter 4-6-14-18), also never existed in the original. In case you didn't know this, the length of Remake, is very similar to the length of the entire original game and we still have other two parts to complete the trilogy (FF7 Rebirth and the third game, which will be the trilogy's endgame) Other than that, wait for Rebirth to have the weirdest stuff happening, because if you thought fighting with parasols was ridiculous, Rebirth is gonna blow your mind with its quirkiness... it's a staple for the game. Though if I have to be honest, I'm sure the game will make those experiences extremely fun and flow really well like they did with Cloud crossdressing (which was in the original). It might seem silly at first, but that's FF7's magic, going from angst to absurd situations in a second😂😂

38:30 Hey, doesn't that also mean that there's 2 Clouds there. One carried with Zack and outside of the trashbag-ghost enshrouded city and one within? 42:35 I'm pretty sure it's not a flashback. The whispers around the city like that happens only in the present. Looks more like a timelines overlapping thing to me. Which might also be why Aerith can sense him. The question then is did they only temporarily overlap and then reverted back or did Zack actually cross over and was originally dead in the present timeline too? 2 Buster swords strongly implies that Zack definitely crossed over. Or mayber we're actually watching 2 separate timelines still. So far Zack and Cloud have not met after all.

Thanks for doing this! I tried playing CC on the PSP back in the day, but the writing (or maybe translation) kept me away. And, Jesus Christ, fuck Genesis. Seriously, what a dope. I can think of very few characters in media that are as eye-roll-inducing. Edit: And now that I've finished Remake I can watch the post-credits comparison with that game. Edit edit: Aw man, there's an INTERmission scene, too? D:

Re, the continuity differences between crisis core and remake; my theory is that the whispers muck with the timeline / continuity. CC is canon with the original FF7 and is consistent with that, but remake is - ... well, the whispers muck with continuity.

Funny thing is the whispers were actually said to represent us as fans cause soo many people kept complaining how they didnt like zack getting killed soo technically the whispers are there to retcon everything..like sephiroth says that he will change everything and before the sephiroth boss fight aerith says that the place we are about to enter is something entirely new and even she wont know anything even if she tapped into the life stream..Aerith was supposed to die there and reunite with zack but she didnt ...everything about the OG final fantasy 7 is about to be retconned in Ff7 rebirth soo you can rest easy if u havent played any of the original..

The order of FF7 is FF7 Crisis Core - FF7 - Advent Children - Dirge of Cerberus - FF7 Remake. In FF7 Zack is dead but in Remake post Advent Children Septhiroth uses the Lifestream to mess with Cloud and take control of clones in the past. FF7 Remake is FF7-2. The 'Remake' in the title was a bit of a bait by Square. Think of the Remake in the title as more of FF7 Remaking fate. As it refers to Aerith and Sephiroth using the lifestream to change the past. FF7 lore is super confusing as it's been expanded on so much.

SquareEnix, at least with the Final Fantasy games, treat localizations as one-and-done. For example, every release of FF4 has used the same script since the Playstation 1 release back in like, 2000. CC almost certainly uses the exact same translated script as it did when it first came out...whenever it did. Very little has changed except for things I can't get into for spoilery reasons.

The theory is that Zack was never meant to die but was considered a threat to the timeline the Whispers were trying to maintain. If you are of a higher level and use something like Aerial Drain to stay healed you can keep the fight going forever and you'll notice how suspicious it is that the enemies literally never run out. It is believed the Whispers were creating infinite copies of Shinra Troops to ensure Zack was killed but when you destroyed their source; the Arbiter in FF7R it stopped them and allowed him to survive. It also explains why the Turks were never able to find Zack and why Midgar only became visible to him AFTER they were destroyed.

And now I bet you can put a lot of new metaphorical meta significance into Aerith's "I miss it... the steel sky." There is just _so much_ that Remake's ending changes and/or otherwise just plain flips upside down with just Zack's survival. It's flipping insane. Question: Are you planning on doing an episode going up against Crisis Core's super boss? (Wouldn't blame you if you decided not to because, hahah, there's seriously _a lot_ of Level, Materia and Mission grinding to be done before going up against said secret boss is even viable, and your schedule might not even allow for it.) For the record, I would _not_ mind a FF7R Lore Run during the month leading up to Rebirth's release.

I also would like to see cissnei in rebirth. I would not like to see genesis in rebirth. Gackt seems insufferable if we go by how genenis is written lol I dont get why genesis turned into a sentai giant monster then reverted back, and still was alive after being touched by the goddess? anime-ness i guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Let's put it this way, FF7 Remake is not a Remake to FF7, It's the Sequel. The Remake refers to Remaking the Timeline and events that happend before in the original Timeline. I honestly think that Playing FF7 the original With the Echo-S Mod would be a great help to understand everything. Oh and FYI you missed a little Scene after the credits
