Thing is, we are applying our current understanding of social science and moral philosophy to build a utopia. But what about a world where social science and moral philosophy has advanced much further than ours? No different from future tech being more advanced than current tech. It's currently unthinkable to us.

Yup, very much this. In all fields of sciences, we do not merely look at one point in time, but instead start by studying all branches of the past leading up to the present branches, and then see where things will be in 2 or 3 years of further research. Social Sciences research is also commonly misunderstood as being lab-bound (only psychology does that...) or small sampled (sociology and political sciences has huge multi-cohort sizes!). But in our current time, we've seen incredible advancements in all fields of social sciences from China, since the days of their failed Cultural Revolution or Great Leap Forward. These advancements then inform other national leaders and policymakers about what aspects need to be tweaked and further tuned based on what feedback loops. If anyone's interested, The Matrix got it right in the 1990s. Utopia cannot be bliss always. The machine architects HAD to implement striving, imperfections, chaos.

so a fun little thought i had a while back is inspired by minority report: we are currently being observed by spectators in the future who haven't even been born yet. technology is very likely to reach a point when a device or machine can take a series of rapid snapshots of the universe around it, analyze the patterns between each snapshot, and continue the pattern back into the past for a clear recreative simulation of the past (which in the context of this comment, would be our present). say hi to your future audience!

on the same line of logic, there will also be a time when spectating people in the past will be illegal without the consent of the observed (you). that means that unless you externalize the consent to be observed by the future, they won't be allowed to. granted, there will be people who circumvent this as there always is for every law. could be when you make a request, an AI scans the "contents" of the past and determines if consent is given. then, if no consent is given, the AI will tell the potential observer that the content is restricted or the observed who did not give consent would be censored out of the output. i have given my consent to be observed and i have even talked at my future observers in various ways. am i insane? likely. do i care? yes, but i want more, not less.

I will say that I have my own theory on why utopias fail. It's because nobody can decide what that looks like, and as such nobody will be happy no matter what changes are made. We as a species possess such diverse worldviews that it's impossible to have a "perfect" world. This can be seen in film: "generalist" pictures meant to have as large of an audience as possible rarely impress anyone, but "specialist" pictures that know exactly who their audiences are seem to score positive reviews a lot more often. Unless we just make societies that are divided based on perspective (which is discrimination and as such extremely unethical) we will always be doomed to fail.

All the examples shown, portray a form of class society. I think to argue about the evil nature of humanity is too simple. If the potential of both utopia and dystopia lies within each one of us, the utopian society might be the one, that does not get rid of suffering; but tries to mitigate it as best as possible. And yet understands, that things will never be perfect.

Wow, not like I didn’t know that, but still... “They are cattle.” gave me shivers. Greed, lust, gluttony, sloth, envy, wrath and pride are not sins, they are part of us, prove our autonomy and humanity are still there. To get rid of them would mean shedding out humanity, and the same goes for virtues. By nature, humans are ambivalent, and in reality there are no sins or virtues or good or bad because everything that lives thrives from and is nourished by the death of another living being. That conclusion is very good. Humans need discomfort in order to improve. The need to fix that discomfort is what drives innovation, and that innovation in turn might create new ways of disconfort which creates even more innovation, and I think that's a good thing. Our flaws is what make Utopias technically impossible, but without them we would lose what makes us human. Utopias are, by definition, perfect and impossible, and humans will always be imperfect.

Something thats always baffled me, we are in a time of unprecedented progress, in practically all metrics we are doing better than ever, with the exception of mental health, but we are also making strives in that department. Yet everyone regardless of political affiliation, age, nationality... seems convinced that utopia is impossible. Its perhaps the one time in history we have had the tools to actually make heaven on earth, or at least the tools to make the tools for that end in a relatively miniscule span of time. Yet we get story after story of the shittiest caricatures of failed utopias and use them as an argument against any and all utopia. You can see why minority report is a stupid system to create an utopia right away, doesnt take a genius. If i list 4 failed attempts at utopia does it mean its impossible? Lets apply that to any other field, wealth, say i tried to be a lawyer, painter, singer and construction worker I could not afford to go to lawschool I did not have the talent to paint for whatever reason I suffered an injury that fucked up my voice, so i cant sing well and As a construction worker alone i didnt make enough money to get rich Is the conclusion that i will always be poor no matter what? No, i would either keep working construction long enough to invest, maybe get into law school, maybe research if theres a way to heal my voice (with stem cells existing, there is), and who knows if i can unlock a talent for painting if i just stop being a pussy and saying that im not meant for it. No one works that way for their individual lives, no one says that they are just meant to fail as individuals, yet we all say utopias are impossible. We just gave up as a collective. Idk what happened, we had it all and we just stopped going to space, stopped making hopefull media, its all about how the world is fundamentally fucked now... even if its better than its ever been. ''Oh but look at this unprecedented bad thing that appeared... like the housing market, or tiktok addiction'' Okay, those are bad, but youre telling me we havnt defeated worse before? and even if we hadnt, even if the problems of today were unprecedented in scale aswell, youre telling me we cant defeat them? Is it so childish to think that we can fix the remaining 1% of bad things, when we have practically gotten rid of war and hunger, or at least made strives that put us well ahead of any other point in known history? I hear you. Most of the sources are already cited in the video, as they are used as examples in every part of the essay. Nevertheless, there are a couple of clips from other movies that cover more or less the same topics but are used mostly to visually illustrate what is said in the video, and those are not cited. The story parts reference "The Time Machine" by H.G. Wells, a book that I love. I included it not only because I thought it was a cool idea to complement parts of the essay with his story, but also as a little Easter egg to see if people would recognize the book in the comments. What these stories get wrong about crime prevention is that if it existed it would be completely unnoticable. You pick up on someone feeling like they want to do something violent, instead of sending a swat team after them and detaining them all you have to do is adjust their tiktok algorithm slightly to show content that will deter them from being violent. We are all controlled by what we consume and if someone adjusted it perfectly so that we are as happy and as healthy we can be it would be the perfect crime prevention system. There is no retaliation because the victim doesn't even know they are being controlled. Of course this can be used to do the opposite, like how people theorise that chine intentionally promited brainrot on american tiktok while theirs is a lot better. Free will doesn't exist, but instead of forcing people to not do crime with brute force, make them think they chose not to do it even tho you control them.

I belive that Utopia IS Possible! But it Will require a perfect moral culture, where everyone is taught how to be loving and compassionate to each other! In miriads of such people there will emerge those who deviate. A "cultural mutations" if you will. He explained pretty well how what is considered a desirable trait today, may be a detriment to our future tomorrow. Take for example. Psychopathic nature. Psychopaths are inherently considered dangers to society, unpredictable, without means of usual control, unfazed by pressures of what is deemed wrong. Psychopaths make heartless soldiers, cold doctors, cunning politicians, and unfeeling conquerors. This trait didnt just pop up out of nowhere, it was cultivated. It's a bit unclear when it first began, some theorize that it first began to occur in early Europe with Vikings, Uncaring murderering pillagers. They were prospered into this role. Taught at a young age to mold into what their society deemed desirable. They also destroyed multiple civilizations and ultimately responsible for the loss of many means of knowledge we could have used. Psychopaths are now one of the most terrifying forces that we built into our society. All because one group of people deemed it a desirable trait. The subject itself is iffy, even as I say this there is no saying Eugenics can't be used in some more useful way, but it can easily be our greatest detriment as what one deems desirable traits, whether that be blond hair and blue eyes, may just be a net negative for our species. Isnt it funny? Even with all the Eugenics in the world. Darwinism still plays as Nature's ultimate decider. We arent God. We never will be God. I realized that a bit ago. Not truly. They technically tackle problems on instinctual scale, which begs the question: Is it better to lobotomize humanity with the intention of making everyone pure from sin or is that too inhumane? Would you rather be psychological Hitler or would you stand by when people suffer? People have desires, would you lobotomize lust out of someone by dampening it so that they don't even think of something like rape? That's the kind of question utopian movies ask: when everything is so pure and organized, is it really life? Are people truly living? Because at the end of the day, the concept of a Utopia is a paradox. You can't give everyone what they want they're guaranteed to go to each other and say, "I want to fuck you," "No, you're not my type." The question is, what do you do in that situation? Give one person what they want and dissatisfy the other? Or lobotomize both?
