It always bothers me how these scumbags zero in on the elderly. My Gramma was the kindest human being who ever lived... once she received a call from a strange number. It was a female voice and Gramma made the innocent mistake of asking, "Jill? Is that you?" (my sister's name) and of course the scammer latched onto that info and began begging for money because she needed to bail out of jail. Luckily Gramma grew suspicious enough to ask the scammer what my sister's middle name was.

I get texts and emails all the time from scammers claiming to be my own priest. They try to convince a parishioner who knows him to “do a favor” for them and purchase gift cards for people he’s going to visit in the hospital. Once, I replied and said, I know you are not Father SoandSo. He responded, “How do you know? I told him, “Everyone knows Father SoandSo only sends emails in Ecclesiastical Latin…” Never heard back from that one. 😂.

Yes, they've done that to our church also. Somehow they use the pastor's email to ask for money then he has to send an email saying don't send me money because that email is not from me. It's happened a couple of times over the past year.

I share these with all my friends over 50. I’m 70, and have been slammed with calls posing as Windows repair, car warranties, Amazon refunds (they just refund the money, they don’t call), SSN crimes, et al. My friends I share these with aren’t gullible or stupid. They’re retired and active and law-abiding people. But if you’re not in the mindset of say, a drug addict, you won’t be thinking like they do. Likewise, if you aren’t a scammy person, you don’t think someone posing as an IRS agent isn’t who they say they are, despite their sketchy accent with a total WASPY name!
