My mother leaned to be a hair dresser in the late 1940's and I can't tell you how many times she pin-curled my hair and then sent me out to sit in the sun with a book on a small stool while my hair dried and she did the same to my sister. Then she would set her own and rush us all through getting ready to leave, drying her own hair in the open window of the car. Removal of the pins near the destination and a quick brush and she had beautiful hair. Years later, for my college graduation a friend wanted a curly style for her hair and I suggested pin curls....and set her hair. A scarf kept the pins in place overnight and she had riotous curls under her cap. Thanks for bringing up that lovely memory.

Women spend much more time today. Back then they often did overnight curls and just a tad of lipstick, if any. Maybe a dab of powder. It's a misconception that they wore a lot of makeup and spent a lot of time on the hair. Nowadays... well.. Foundation, blush, lipliner, eyebrows, baking, highlighting etc etc etc..
@MariMari-hp7bf5 жыл бұрын
@@Amoroussparkle not to mention extremely complex skincare routines, hair care routines, hair styling and upkeep if you dye your hair, etc also we now shave a LOT more than we used to, especially pubic hair, which wasnt a trend until the late 90s. our beauty standards are even more unrealistic, esp. with the trend of "slim thick" which usually requires fat transfer surgery and lipsuction for the average woman to achieve... on the bright side, women get to do all of the housework/childrearing AND juggle a job on top of that. woohoo?

it’s a LOT of work not just effort and a bit of trying. If I had someone who basically owned me, through marriage, finances all the beauty stuff, gives me a huge allowance and my job was the house, kids and looking pretty. Then it’s certainly achievable. Still I’d rather spend my time being my own rich man and doing hours of doing hair like this for a wedding or a birthday.

I continued doing pin curls on people until I retired. I had several older women that NEVER changed their style! I remember doing my grandma's hair in pin curls....forward / reverse waves all over. One day we went over to my aunts and she was there and my aunt was putting rollers in her hair!! I said what the heck grandma....she said I needed the practice...lol By the way, the only way to make those styles stay is to use a styling lotion that was the consistency of 'snot'...and that's what we called it...

I just noticed those pin-curl clips have a large gap for the curl to rest in! So cool! If you use regular clips, you're only supposed to pin the end of the hair on the inside of the curl, if you pin across the whole curl then you get a funny crimp that sets into the hair. Around 9:15 you can see on the top right where the pins left their mark. That curl was pinned with the pin upside down at 8:38 so the notch in the pin wasn't able to do it's job. The finished style was done beautifully though, you can't tell. Great job!

this is still a gorgeous way to style hair. I do a pin curl set on all my curly hair clients who wear their hair curly. I don’t brush them out and it creates beautiful defined curls. Very beautiful but I understand why women didn't wash their hair as much and the excuse of staying in to wash your hair was a thing. And every time you see old photographs women have their hair done. Across all backgrounds too: working women, poor, all cultures. Did no one ever wash and go? Airdry? lol. I'd probably wash my hair only once a week if I was expected to look like this. Fashion and beauty in general seems to be going towards the casual and laidback especially with the popularity of athleisure, streetwear, and celebrity culture but I wonder if beauty routines and culture will cycle back in a sense with some new ornate, more formal hairstyles that become iconic to that time

Sarabeth What if you brushed half has much? Would you still lose that much curl? I know having fine hair that doesn’t hold curl as well is a huge pain. I might also suggest creating much smaller pin curls. Or using something like the Rockin’ Rollers to set your curl. You can get a nice tight curl with them.

Instead of spraying with water use Aussie Sprunch spray. It's less than $4 if you're in the U.S. I pour a little out and water it down a bit which is a tip I got from Bettina May at a pin up hair and makeup workshop. Also buy a Denman brush at Sally's and that will help. The type of brush you use makes a big difference.

Spray your set with a little bit of FLEXIBLE hold hair spray. Apply a bit of heat on a low setting from your hairdryer. I have a lot of hair but its fine and straight so I usually have to apply heat to mine. Works like a charm, just be careful not to blow everything around violently or you'll blow little hairs right out of your pincurl clips and end up frizzy.
