While Doug is right about this being a really cliched movie, I think it's harmless. It's nowhere near as horrible as the sequel, that's for sure. What makes it work is the chemistry between Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews - they work really well off each other. Not to mention Anne Hathaway has a pretty damn good career evolution - Princess Diaries IMO was a good starting point, The Devil Wears Prada helped her survive Princess Diaries 2, I haven't seen Rachel Getting Married but I hear pretty good things about it, and in 2012 she not only played a damn good Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, but also won an Oscar for her role as Fantine in Les Miserables. And last year, of course, there was Interstellar. I don't care what anybody says - that's impressive!

Man, this could have been an amazing concept: modern Cinderella-esque if only they introduced something MODERN into it! Teaching the nerd girl things like staff management, turning her school essay writing skills into speechmaking skills, her math classes into statistics and finances, letting others handle her makeup while she works her mannerisms. On top of that, she should have been spending time in the Air force instead of rising horseback, or using rifles instead of fencing. Take all those old royal military passtimes and modernize them. Exchange that princess dress with a dictator's unique costume and her courtesy classes adding in psychological manipulation and ability to spot traitors and spies.

I disagree completely. Just because a film has cliches doesn't mean it is bad. The film has conflict, and it has great moments that even I thought were worth the watch. Just because you don't like a film, doesn't mean its a bad film. Ann is a great actress, and this has a lot of great moments with her and Julie Andrews. I think he's being way too harsh on it. Someone forgets what it was like to be an unsure teenager.

Joseph Um plenty of people hate this movie because it doesn’t do anything new with its clichés. That can be pretty bad. This is also a guy who doesn’t mind some movies having dumb clichés, and as a matter of fact, he enjoys it. This does sound like it’s way too much.

Also, there are movies actually praised for being good at portraying the angst of being a teenager, in the way that this movie was not. Also, if you saw the comments, some of them brought up the actual book, which they said was way better than this.

To be fair, we’re kind of led to assume that the queen is some kind of political leader, but if their monarchy is anything like other real western monarchies, all the real power falls to the parliament and civil service, with the queen acting in a primarily ceremonial role. So one could actually make the argument that it is more important for her to learn the etiquette and ceremonial skills than the political aspects. Where this gets problematic though is why so many people seem to be scheming for the throne, it’s kind of like someone scheming to become First Lady of the United States. Certainly they’re significant public figures, but they hold no official powers.

Another bad example of book to movie adaptations. The book was 10x more original and hilarious. And the characters felt like real people and just freaking cardboard cutouts that talk in cliches. And the sequel pissed me the hell off. If I was Meg Cabot I'd have kicked someone. And Disney did the same shit to Avalon High.

+Miss Moxie The books are so goddamn GOOD for teen fiction, I still sometimes, when I have a lot of freetime, go back and read through all ten of them in a row because they are hilarious, creative and actually have valuable lessons for teenagers. The writing style matures with the characters and the material becomes more serious, it's a great series to grow up with. The movies, however, are a huge pile of shit compared to the books (or even other movies of the genre) and I thought it was hilarious that Meg Cabot, through Mia in the books, complained about the unfaithful adaptations XD

The only thing I find better in the movie is the grandma in the book she is not great and the relationship is done well in the movie, being strict as a queen but lovable and appreciating her more, and in the book it is a little bit stupid how she didn't figure out she was a princess before, while in the movie they give a good reason for it, everything else is better in the book. As for Avalon high you are right even though I did like the addition of the character of Miles/Merlin in the movie

Give the humor more credit! There's a lot of cheeky humor happening in the background - two nuns put on hold for the police; the overhead announcements at the school like "will the Feng shuei club please stop rearranging furniture"; the Teen Scene reporter desperately grasping at reporting on Mia's 'attire'. The movie was cliche, but there was so many jokes constantly throughout the movie that resulted in a charming, cheeky feel and kept everything from just being flat. (See Radio Rebel for an example of flatness.)

I understand why you think this movie is cliche, but honestly I have to point out something! Because Mia (Anne Hathaway's character) didn't know ANYTHING about being royal, of course she's gonna start with simple basics and not jump right into politics, she's teaching her how to compose herself so that she can BECOME a princess, you don't teach politics first, that wouldn't make sense. Yeah the way you complained about that particular aspect of the film makes it seem like you're saying that's an inherently bad writing choice. I get it, I maybe they should've discussed SOME political matters, but considering that she didn't know ANYTHING about being a princess, I can let that slide and I think other people should too.

Ahhhh and the book was so good! It sucks to see they totally messed up the movie >-< Wish they wouldn't have played it so safe. And changed all the interesting parts into gross over used cliches (the dead father one especially. In the book the reason she ever found out she was a princess was because her father got cancer and had to have his testicles removed, so he couldn't have children, leaving her the only blood heir. Why more interesting than "well he died". And I liked seeing Mia interact with him.) They really made into a kids movie though when that wasn't originally the target audience.
@TheSoundOfGeorgia
@TheSoundOfGeorgia 3 жыл бұрын
The main reason he's dead in the movie is because they cast Julie. I haven't read the books, but from what I've heard the grandmother's role is much smaller. But since they cast Julie Andrews, they wanted the role to be bigger. So they killed off the father and gave the grandmother more to do.

I remember my mom took me and my sisters to see it Produced by Whitney Houston and made $165 million at the box office despite the mixed reviews mainly of its narrative Had no idea it was based on the book by Meg Cabot This is was the movie that made Anne Hathaway a star Love Julie Andrews coming out of semi-retirement doing this and Hector Ellizando This isn’t a bad film; the 2nd movie is worse falling back on female stereotypes The late Garry Marshall actually does a competent job here directing With Mia realizing she's a princess it gives her a platform for speaking out confronting her stage fright Love the soundtrack here I remember the Disney channel movie surfers promo too and one of the hosts from Zenon showed up in the movie The movie still has charming actors and a great heart supporting it

The books are definitely better. One funny thing is that since these films were made during the books being written, said books actually make fun of the films. That was quite an enjoyable part. For any interested, in the books, Mia doesn't instantly become beautiful after getting a make over, she looks good like anyone else who had just gotten an expensive make over.

as a kid this movie was one of my favorites on Disney Channel. I identified with Anne Hathaway's character a lot, and with her best friend. Looking back now I realize how fucked up some parts of this movie was, especially the makeover sequence. I don't think they should have straightened her hair, or made her take off her glasses, or any other nonsense they did. Why didn't they just make her a curly haired, nerdy looking princess? The message is that if you don't fit into this beauty standard, you're not good enough to be a princess, and therefore not beautiful. It doesn't seem like that big of a deal to most people, but as someone who has curly hair, it really concerns me that we've been teaching young children that our hair is ugly. In Harry Potter too, Hermione has curly hair up until Goblet of Fire, where she transforms into this really beautiful young lady and becomes more of a romantic interest to other boys. Again, it doesn't seem like much, but growing up in a culture that pretty much tells you that you aren't good enough the way that you came into this world is really fucked up. I grew up hating myself because no one who was labeled as beautiful looked like me, and I felt like no one would ever see me as beautiful. Luckily today we see more variety in characters and actors, but we still have a ways to go.

At least Harry Potter treated it like she was growing into a woman, and yeah, that's what teenagers go through, so that was what they were trying to convey. It also was just one moment. Here, these are montage sequences. And also,...terribly sorry.

as someone who lives in a country with an actual monarchy - no, royals are not permitted to get involved in politics. they carry a ceremonious role, as i assume would be the case in genovia. so no, she would probably learn history and such, but she is not to actually get involved with that. you're taking 'ruling a country' very literally. i watched this when i was young, and already then, i knew how constitutional monarchies worked. she has a position of influence, as well as an ambassador role, but she has no say in public policy.

This was one of my favorite movies in high school. Plus, it was a return of Julie Andrews to Disney movies, and I'm just realizing that this was by Gary Marshall, Héctor Elizondo (of Pretty Woman fame (also by Gary Marshall)) returned to romcoms. I really enjoyed Hocus Pocus (almost as much as Princess Diaries), but I am SHOCKED that you're ragging on Gary Marshall. You didn't bring up any of his comedy contributions. Writing for the Dick Van Dyke Show and Gomer Pyle, USMC, going on to create the Odd Couple, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley (starring his sister Penny), and Mork & Mindy. If Gary Marshall wasn't directing the film, I would expect Andrews's Blake Edwards to have done it. After All, Edwards didn't just write, direct, and produce the classic Pink Panther movies, but he also directed Breakfast at Tiffany's.

In the books (yes this is based on a book series) Genova or whatever it's called is a constitutional monarchy so she is never going to have any real power. They mention politics very little in the books but, it is still there. I don't know why they didn't mention the fact she was a figure head.

If you were a really young kid who didn't know ANY of the cliches, wouldn't this movie be an okay starting point? Good actors and harmless script, I can't ask for much more. ...I mean, it is DISNEY, we SHOULD expect a bit more from this giant, but eh.

eh the Van Trokens aren't really antagonists, since they haven't really tried to do anything to sabotage her, the Antagonist in PD2 is more villainous than these two

damn Doug, you hate movies ment for young female demographics. These movies are made to be viewed with a wonder of simplicity, not a over analysis of cliches and classic repetition. love the channel but i recommend taking it easy on the kids who grew up in this films release era.

I kinda do, too. Actually no, I like Crazy, Stupid, Love a lot, but because it actually subverted clichés. It didn't just give the same exact clichés over and over. Also, this is mad eby a studio known for its creativity. I think he has a right to be upset. Heck, the review isn't even for kids, he reviewed the Pirates movies, too!!

There's something a little slimy about taking a gorgeous actress, dressing her down to try and make her look as plain and average as you POSSIBLY can... and then dressing her back up again, feigning amazement at how hot the hot chick is. "Holy crap! It's ALMOST like she's a movie star!" Sure. ANY woman could suddenly look like Anne Hathaway... or Rachel Leigh Cook... or (to a lesser extent) Ami Dolenz. All that stands in their way is a make-over montage.

This is a pretty unfair assessment of this film. Makes sense though since Doug has different taste and of course didn't grow up with it. I think he didn't realize that the Von Trokens aren't actually supposed to be a threat in the film and just some comedic relief. And yeah her beach fiasco didn't have long lasting consequences; however, it did force her grandmother to realize that Mia's young with a lot being asked of her, and taught Mia who her real friends are when her head got too big. But of course, he's watched it once and I've watched it 107 times 😅

The books are leaps and bounds above the movies. In the movie Mia's pretty bland so girls can identify with her. In the book she's not 'nerdy' so much as a hipster, and her intelligence/awareness is almost unbelievable for a fifteen year old, but she still has a lot of guilty pleasures she's into, like romance novels and Broadway musicals. Lilly in the books is a hyper-genius. The Grandmother never really becomes sympathetic and is instead a snarky old lady. Her dad's alive but is sterile and Mia is his sole offspring. Everyone is more rounded...and even the 'princess reveal' is more believable, because Mia knows her father's a bigwig in Genovia...she just didn't know he was royalty.

When I was reading the books, Mia didn't seem for me like an intelligent girl. More like a regular teenager who has a lot of stupid mistakes in her view of world and says and does many silly things. Like not overly stupid but not intelligent... Just super regular and a bit boring

Biohazard1999 Kingsman for girls sounds...more or less more awesome. Hey, I’m not trying to be against girls, I loved Wonder Woman, but you could do a lot of cool things with that that Ghostbusters or what it sounds like Ocean’s 8 didn’t do. Or maybe you couldn’t and it would really just be he same thing as the previous one except that it has girls in it. It’s not really that interesting, narrative-wise.
