I always look at this movie as the transition point between the "Stuffy" feel of the first movie and the angst-sodden feel of the last few. I've always seen PoA as the comfortable balance between the two extremes.
@WiqidBritt
@WiqidBritt 8 жыл бұрын
The first two movies felt stale and safe. The teachers and older students are constantly talking about how 'dangerous' everything is, and yes kids are being petrified in the second movie, but it never really felt threatening. It was like everyone was saying "You could die! (but you probably won't really even get hurt)" with a big smile on their face like it was all an amusement park ride. It kind of makes sense though, Harry's young and still new to all of what's going on. So the whimsical sense of wonder overshadows the real danger of these situations. That goes away as he gets older and the reality of the situation sets in.

It remains my favorite Potter movie for precisely this reason, I think. It has the feel of a Grimms' fairy tale, with moments of levity and whimsicality, and moments of darkness and real danger. It is entirely infused with a sense of wonder throughout, but doesn't deny the dark side contained within that wonder.

+Britton Stanaland nah son the second film was a lot darker than the first one. still had cutesy remnants but i'd say that there actually is a solid threat of death there (jesus christ those fucking spiders). i completely agree about the first one tho.

It's kind of perfect that, even if he hadn't read the books, the tonal shifts Cuaron made matched almost exactly with book's story-telling maturity.

i've heard people say that PoA was the worst adapted screenplay in the series, and i just tell them to read the book again, because the dialogues different but the subtext and emotion is better adapted then the other books. I also think of PoA as the movie responsible for the final design of Hogwarts itself. Cuaron's set designers took what was built for the previous movies and the exterior shots of Hogwarts and built the final castle grounds that are used for the rest of the series. that effort really makes hogwarts feel like a real place, instead of just a castle overlooking a lake.

I think the movie was better than the books in the way it shifted tone, actually. Books 3 and 4 are still whimsical and childish, we get some grimdark, skincrawling tones only partially at the 5th book, and then full on in the 6th. meanwhile the 3rd movie is scarier then the 4th, and rightly so, since dementors are a pretty fucked up concept and they are supposed to traumatized the protagonist for years to come.

I ALWAYS TELL PEOPLE HOW GREAT THE BOGGART MIRROR EFFECT IS!!! But my non-filmmaking friends don't understand why they're such great shots!!! But yes as I always tell people this is the best Harry Potter FILM! It has a really gothic feel! It keeps you on edge with it's cinematography and just... ah!!! The music too!!! Also one thing I really enjoyed in this one is the set designs! Especially the shreaking shack as it sways left to right throughout the whole scene! In fact a lot of buildings and structures feel like they could fall or break at any moment! For example when Harry is in his hotel room at the Leaky Cauldron it shakes wildly as a train passes! Also while he stands on his bed to squash the monster book, the whole room shakes with dust falling all around! And even the knight bus has that feeling of un-safe-ness with all the beds rollings around a chandelier right in the centre!!! theres just a whole theme of things being unstable!!!!! thats the word!!! unstable!!!!!!

Harry hearing the woman screaming (his mom) when he is attacked by Dementors is actually Voldemort's memory, as Dementor attacks force you to relive your worst memory, and the woman screaming is actually Voldemort's memory of dying. Fun facts! Also Harry thinking it was his dad casting the patronus is a nice way of putting that Harry basically has to be his own dad. Kinda. Basically he has to do it because... he has to. Which is the reasoning he gives for being able to cast the patronus at the end anyways.

It's funny you mention Marvel going back to a safer, more generic set of directors because I'd argue that Taika Waititi for Thor: Ragnarok, Ryan Coogler for Black Panther and the recently announced Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck for Captain Marvel are a continuation of finding unique voices for their films in the MCU.

I wonder how long it will take before Lucasfilm decides to trust the director like Marvel does? The amount of backstage drama really shows that they don't trust the director's vision.
@PetrosofSparta
@PetrosofSparta 5 жыл бұрын
It was called The Last Jedi, they trusted Rian Johnson implicitly. For the most part, it was a rounding success critically and for the box office minus a sadly loud portion of people who didn't like it but that's what comes with a vision and not a cardboard cut out - people didn't like HP3 either when it first came out, but it was also much earlier in a series than TLJ.
@GlacialScion
@GlacialScion 5 жыл бұрын
Petros Ioannou The reason that the decision to trust a director's sole vision is a big deal is that it is a risk, and in the case of TLJ I would argue it's a risk that backfired in a substantial way. Not everyone who dislikes that movie are deranged idiots who think the problems with that movie had anything to do with casting. As you said yourself, those people are a loud bunch, but they don't represent the majority of people who found the film lacking.

I think on a deeper level the movie is about finding happiness in the face of adversity, as Dumbledore says "Happiness can be found Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light". The Lumos scene is representative of that as Harry is struggleing to create light in his dark world that is constantly in surveillance. In fact there are many shots in the movie of Harry looking at his reflection as even Harry's not sure if he fill find happiness with all the shit that keeps happening to him. In the exact midpoint of the movie, it seems as though he's given into the darkness when he woes to kill Sirius. But during the Expecto Patronum scene he understands that only he can bring light into his life when his spell literally creates a light so bright that it brightness up the blue world around him. The movie ends with a freeze-frame on his brightly lit smiling face indicating that he found happiness after all, at least for now.

Phil Collins' "Take Me Home"? You magnificent bastard. Anyway. Everybody is voting Galaxy Quest, because of course they are. That movie is a fucking masterpiece. _However_, its' excellence is well-established. Anyone who know anything knows that Galaxy Quest is a masterpiece. (And, let me say that as an unapologetic Trekkie: Pretty much the best Star Trek parody possible, simply for how damn *affectionate* it is.) Herein lies the problem. This show has the premise of appreciating underappreciated movies, fighting the fight for the underdogs. (Or at least, it _used_ to have that premise. You've been slacking off a little on that lately, haven't you. HAVEN'T YOU, MIKEY?) *In the spirit of the show*, i can therefore only do one thing: I vote for Interstellar. Because I'm somewhat dubious as to its' qualities as a piece of cinema, and godamnit, I wanna hear your take on it. So, yeah: Interstellar.

This is also where the folly of Ron starts in favor of Hermione as she begins to become this infallible super character. She takes his bravery, magical knowledge, and spot as Harry's best friend. The whole action of Hermione protecting Harry from Serious as Ron is bleeding and rambling was supposed to be Ron bloody and courageously standing in between the two saying he would have to kill him to get to Harry. Rowling has stated that she was relieved that Warner Brothers were protecting Hermione from being a hollywood cliche, but she seriously screwed up letting the groups chemistry be dynamically changed this way.
@lillyteeea9887
@lillyteeea9887 6 жыл бұрын
I think that that already started in the first movie. For example in the scene with the devil's snare. In the book Ron was the only one to remember that they could use magic to survive, which was the only reason Hermione managed to fight the plant off and rescue everybody. While in the movie Ron was only used for comedic relief and made to look like a fool.

I’m currently reading the books with my kids, watching the films as we go. I’m absolutely fascinated by your takes on the movies and they enhance my film watching experience so much! Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban was my favorite book, and young naïve little me was actually quite disappointed in the film, mostly because I was used to the Chris Columbus screenplay style of filming. But watching them again I see how Alfonso Cuaron elevated the series to a whole new level, enabling it to become a film series rather than a series of screen plays.

I probably rented A Little Princess 20 times on VHS, then when I saw Azkaban I immediately recognised the style without even knowing who Cuaron was. The movie has that special dark/fantastical perfect balance Burton and del Toro work so hard to achieve. Goerge Miller and Chris Noonan's Babe come very close to it too, in a lighter way.

Super awesome job on this one, Mikey! This might be one of my favorites you've done yet. Fun fact: Alfonso Cuarón has directed two of my favorite movies of all time, but I had no idea he directed this until I saw the vote at the end of the last video. This was one of the last harry potter films I saw before I stopped caring about the movies, and I always remembered it as the high point of the first four; and I'm DEFINITELY going to rewatch it now. Curse you for making me choose between Interstellar and MI3, both of which I've voted for before... but I gotta go with the Jabrams, if only because of how openly it embraces the fact it's MacGuffin the movie.

While I like the other movies in the series, they're never more than enjoyable fantasy kids/young people's movies to me, whereas Azkaban I absolutely adore. It's just so beautifully crafted and the joy of that seeps through pretty much every scene in the film. Part of me wishes that Alfonso had stayed to complete the series, but I'm never sure if that would have diluted the achievement of the third film or if we'd have just got a hell of a lot more of this stunning and whimsical world.

Rewatching this movie a few years after I finished throwing up, I noticed a lot about the cinematography of this movie that helped win me over all over again. I think my favorite element of this is early on when Harry is first told about Sirius Black. He's dragged off all isolated, with him and Mr Weasley and the frame alongside a close up of a moving picture of Sirius; every step taken, every movement and angle observed is perfectly designed to showcase just how alone Harry is all of a sudden, and make clear that his life is now visibly darker for the changes.

It can't be coincidence that you used Take Me Home so soon after Mr. Robot used it to such amazing effect in the two part season premiere, can it? This is in no way a criticism or 'gotcha', I love the way it fits here too! Ever since that MR episode, I've fallen back in love with that song and I perked up [perked up more, I was already perked for a new MwM] when I heard it quietly rising in the background. Anyway, PoA has always been my favorite of the franchise, and I'm glad you share my admiration for it (:

[m] Yeah, that was purposeful. I heard it on MR and immediately thought of Harry Potter. Figured I should trust that instinct

I could have watched maybe two or three times as long a video as the one you've done. It's great, and the only disapointing thing in it is... It ended… abruptly. Loved it Mikey, and yeah, I know it's long and tedious job to do longer videos. Thanks.

Your hard work definitely was demonstrated in the quality of the final product! Your program is one that I think best shows the mark of the time and energy of its creator. As for the vote I would like to see you deconstruct Interstellar I love Galaxy Quest dearly and would be very excited to hear and see what you have to say for that. So Galaxy Quest is my vote. Keep up the fantastic work!

It's interesting hearing the discussion about Cuaron's effect on adaptations. When Azkaban came out I was 16, and in a lot of ways my ideas on adaptations were still growing and changing a lot, with the state their in know being in large part a result of comparing how the various Harry Potter adaptations worked. I noticed a lot of what was mentioned in the video, but I didn't really relate it to anything at the time.
