The Problem With Canon - ENRAGED Writers Hate Fans Force Them To Make Sense

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is among many series where canon has been contradicted to appease the writers, not the fans. Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+ also followed this strange contradiction of prequel as a canon loophole.
But as writers and journalists talk more about the reason why, such as in The Witcher series with Henry Caville where writers hated and actively mocked the source material and games, we know why the quality is low. The question is why break canon in Rings of power or The Witcher? What do the writers of Rings of Power, Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Witcher want to achieve?

We've long had the theory that writers didn't like the IP's they were writing for, but recently several examples have actually proved it. Journalists for a long time have despised canon because for one reason, it means they have to actually know what they're talking about, but it also prevents them pushing the ideas they want to force into entertainment. So recently there has been a whole host of articles and arguments coming forwards against the fans to try and destroy the idea of canon altogether. This is my thoughts on why, but what are yours? Do you think canon limits creativity? Do stories actually have to fit in with stories that came before them? Let me know what you think down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

If writers don't want to be restricted by canon, there is a simple solution to this: Write a new story. The problem is, they know no one wants to watch their material, so they have to attach it to an IP that already has a fan base.

Unfortunately problem has another big hurdle that isn't always the writers fault - studios only being willing to bank on existing IP. Half of these writers, who should not be touching something they don't themselves cherish, don't get the opportunity to make something original in this climate. Not to mention, plenty of people have added to canon they didn't care for, but were able to treat it with enough respect to still make a worthwhile contribution. It doesn't happen anymore though, due to everyone's need to push 'the message'.

And they hate the fans, because they are the people who call them out on their shit.

In other words, everyone is wrong but them. Pity that didn't help them with views so it proved the point we were making all along with ROP, no matter the attacks on us for their choice to culturally appropriate our culture which according to them is a big no no, yet insulted us for objecting. We see straight through their hypocrisy now so the ist/phobe attacks fall on deaf ears. The numbers appear to speak for themselves no matter how much they hide them from us.

She had the gall to call Tolkien's work narratively thin? You can call his work many things; verbose, complex, deep, even boring, but I would never call it narratively thin. His work has been the forefather of the modern idea of what fantasy is. Honestly one of the best ways that the re-writing of canon has been done is in the God of War game series. They take many tropes of the characters we are familiar with, but re-frame them in a different view point. Even in their own canon though, they make logical sense. They maintain continuity and consistency in their characters and characters' motivations.

For actual fans (it turns out some minimum gatekeeping is actually necessary), canon is anything but restrictive. I present the entire corpus of fan-fiction, which is people being endlessly creative, deriving a wellspring of inspiration from a story they love. They don't find it limiting to fit within canon, it's their greatest aspiration. And even if they are the perverse kind of fans who engage with it by twisting it, at least they don't fancy themselves post-modern glorious poo-artists who deserve to play in the IP like it's their sandbox.

There's still people who make fanfiction of Buffy the vampire slayer, Ranma 1/2 and a lot of older IP, that don't have anything official released in a while. And even if what they make isn't canon compliant, you know they like the series and want to make something for the Fandom. Otherwise they wouldn't make it. Yet these guys get paid to ruin the series that others love, it's a twisted kind of hate that I can't relate to, if I dislike something I just don't watch or read it, at worst I'll write a review/comment about what I didn't like. Not attack others for liking it.

I'd argue that IPs end up being successful because you limit yourself, for example always considering how a character might react to something at a certain point on his journey. If you want that character consistency then you have to work within these limits, the freedom then comes in the form at what kind of obstacles you might be able to put in their path, though even here if you go crazy you just end up with an inconsistent world, and that's something that people will generally pick up on.

Spot on, tbf Canon is most of the ground work done for you, you can concentrate more on character development and story than the world building and logic that needs to exist in that world. I find it absolutely baffling that these Writers are moaning about canon. I guess its because they are more interested in putting across their own selfish views and stories rather than trying to build on what has been made before. Its just motivated by narcissism. That or its lazy-ness - both are as bad as each other. And the sad thing is that there are so many talented writers out there that would kill to have their jobs and would do such much better in their position and it makes me angry that in so many of our shows/movies etc there are Writers put in charge that don't care about source material, imagine something like She Hulk or ROP put in the hands of a super talented fan. Check out how good ROP could have been by looking at "Tolkien Untangled" YT channel - he has a series of videos where he writes how the ROP should've been done. Him or a person with that same passion and love for the source material are the people who should be in charge of our shows/movies.

Can you think of a single time that the heads of the Studios ever even once called out their failures, called out the damage being done to their most valuable assets, ever once stood up for the fans when the writers and directors and cast members were engaged in PR campaigns that over and over backfired and caused even more damage to the assets? no. you cannot. i don't mean to be dismissive...but suggesting this is a result of a writers issue is like thinking systemic oppression is caused by the one's fellow citizenry. @Sabizos Morgoth definitely wasn't pure chaos; he represented domination / oppression, in contrast to Sauron who represented order / control. The most "chaotic" thing about Morgoth was his ability to corrupt. I had this as another comment but I think it fits so well that I wanna post it again: Sauron starts off as a classic ambitious, capable junior partner--when Morgoth had a vision, Sauron bought in because when Morgoth split from the parent company, he offered greater mobility and some real responsibility. Sure, Morgoth was chaotic and petulant, but he had a creative vision that was fresh and inspiring and Sauron was hooked. The two of them balance each other. Sauron is a process guy. He's second to none technically and an excellent crafter, but Morgoth has the creative juice. Morgoth comes up with things that just boggle Sauron's mind: self-replicating little monsters that make their own machines? Flying flamethrowers that seek out gold? Genius! Sauron dosen't have Morgoth's sheer creative talent because his need for control stifles any creativity. Maybe there's resentment and conflicted feelings in Sauron. Despite his loyalty and admiration for his senior partner, maybe he feels frustrated by his mentor's histrionics. In the meantime they do great things. Terrible, but great. When Morgoth is finally exiled, Sauron is lost. He didn't realize how wrapped up he had gotten in the culture of Morgoth. The other Valar make a convincing argument that he needs to reign himself in and take responsibility for his evil. Evil? Sauron didn't stop once to think about the morality of what he was doing. He was Daedalus building the Labyrinth--for all his flaws, Morgoth gave him the space to use his talents without fussing over things like "morality". But the other Valar and Maiar make it clear: there's only one team, and it's Team Eru Illuvatar. You're either on the team, or you're not. Without Morgoth, Sauron is miserable. He's a caged panther in a petting zoo, crackling with restless energy. He becomes resentful of the other Valar and Maiar, whose creations seem to be favored while Morgoth never really got a fair shake. Meanwhile his mentor and only real friend is gone, the only one who gave him a chance for self development and saw the potential in him for something more. And the other Valar have the nerve to moralize to Sauron about 'atonement'. They lecture him about how Morgoth didn't 'respect' the other Valar's precious little shit creatures now running around on their own, like they actually matter. The Valar show more concern for their shiny little ant farms than what should be their own family. Sauron starts thinking: would it have really killed the Valar to just include Morgoth? Would it have been really that bad to just accept a little bit of diversity in their 'music'? Those are the thoughts that lead Sauron to say, "No. You don't get to lecture me about the only person who respected my potential and treated me like a partner." So he strikes off on his own, a junior partner picking up his mentor's business. He doesn't have Morgoth's creative juice, but he's a process guy. All he needs is a little help. Something to buff his stats if you will. Luckily, crafting is right in Sauron's wheelhouse, and Eru's stupid creations might just be desperate enough to make a deal...

This was a really great assessment by Disparu. It's interesting when you think about why writers are shoehorning new characters into existing IP: 1) Even before politics, it's a way for writers to avoid the direct comparison between their work and the previous canon. This is an incredibly insecure generation. Instead of being willing to take a chance and work with existing characters and storylines, bringing in new characters and plots keeps the comparisons at arm's length, shielding the fragile egos of the "creators". In this way, any justification after the fact - the wokeness, the "modern re-imagining" - is a smokescreen. 2) The flipside of their fragility is the narcissism that covers it. It's not enough to honour existing canon and fandom, they need to make it about them. This is why it needs to be fun, they need to have the freedom to create brand new entities (yet without the creativity or artistry to actually create a new universe, and of course, they need the protection of existing fans, even as they denigrate and disrespect them). It's all about them. Pathetic. 3) The politicisation of everything today means that people are raised to believe that everything has to be a statement about modern culture. And if existing characters and plots can't work because they're not modern enough to sync with wokeness, then the huge (and necessary... pfft) departure from canonical depictions will cause them to be criticised (see above). So using an existing universe but adding new characters and plots that do support a woke narrative is a way of pushing propaganda. 4) The modern writers, etc. and their self-indulgent, judgemental politics, make criminals of the fans of canon. We, the fans, are the problem, enjoying the canon that possibly fails against a modern social justice standard. (I mean, remember when they put that white actor in blackface to play Lando? And when they refused to hire an actual Wookiee to play Chewbacca?). So there is no respect for fans that are the problem, and every motivation to try to force propaganda onto said fans, since they are so clearly in need of conversion to the cult of wokeness. 5) Commercial considerations. New characters can tick off new "representation" and try to crack new demographic markets to drive more sales. Also, introducing "cute" or otherwise distinct characters is a way to retcon a universe to have a Baby Yoda, Baby Groot or similar for the purposes of selling toys, costumes and other paraphernalia. Both the new representation and the cute characters also serve as a way to test interest in spin-offs.

My experience with fanfiction, that does not have the expectations of canon, is that if you expand on a story then even fanfiction must still maintain the spirit, core themes, characterisations, archetypes, ect, of the original, all those foundational elements that make it that thing. Even dramatically different alternative universes need enough to tie it to the original to warrant the named connection. Fanfics that do not do that get filtered down to the bottom of the pile on fanfiction sites, every time. Good writing is of course important, but if it doesn't feel like the world and characters named then people clock out much faster then they do for simple writing errors. If these professional writers can't do what I have seen so many dozens of fanfic writers do, myself included, they should not be writing anything for an existing IP, and if they think fans will be more forgiving of new stories in an ip then they are of unpaid fanfiction, then they have not paid any attention to the fandoms they claim to be a part of.

This is actually great. I've always felt constrained by "canon," and am looking forward to applying the lessons of this article to my life. For example, the writer of this article might be canonically named "Andrew," but being forced to rigidly adhere to calling him by his canonical name limits my freedom of expression. I am going to add my own creativity to his nomenclature by referring to him as "Cuntface O'Kiddyrapist." And he might list his professions as "writer and director," but I don't feel those titles reflect MY experience. So from now on, Cuntface O'Kiddyrapist's job titles really should be described as "rent boy-he whore" and "meth cook." Does it make sense? Doesn't matter. What matters is being free to express myself without the shackles of "canon." Just ask professional whore and meth cook Cuntface O'Kiddyrapist--I'm sure he agrees with me.

I absolutely love this. I have said for years that the problem with many writers translating stories, books, and games to movies, or simply remaking classic movies, is that they are not invested in bringing that story to life as much as trying to rewrite an established story to be their story because they are hacks. They can't come up with their own idea, so they steal (I mean, buy the rights to) someone else's IP and try to make it their own, riding the coattails of truly good writers and story creators.

The Star Trek writer who created the BSG reimagining was Ronald D. Moore and he is a great writer in both franchises. This is from an interview with Ron Moore back in 2000. "The STAR TREK past, it's challenging; it sounds like it's fun on one level, and I thought that was an interesting way to go for a long time. But it has a lot of pitfalls to it. You have a very complex future mapped out. If you are going to go into STAR TREK's past, say, pre-Kirk, you better have an iron-clad commitment to maintaining the continuity that's been established, or I think you are just going to lose everybody. Because if you go back before Kirk, and you start screwing around, and you just don't care what NEXT GEN or DS9 or VOYAGER established, or the movies, or even the original series, you just try to make it up as you go along, I think you just lost everyone. The whole franchise will just collapse, because it will have no validity whatsoever. If you are going to go there, you really better be prepared to truly put on the STAR TREK mantle and be the keeper of the flame." "I think that is really hard for Rick and Brannon. It's hard for them to do that, because they don't like the original show. Let's not mince words. They don't like the original show. They have never liked the original show. They'll bob and weave a bit here and there in public. But they don't like it; they don't want to have anything to do with it. If you are going to go before the original series and do something, you better have a change of attitude. You better have an epiphany about how much you love the original series. It's all going to be about leading up to that."

Fans who write fanfiction enjoy making their stories fit and adhere to canon. Or they will state it's AU at the start. Hollywood writers hate making their stories adhere to canon, because they really want to tell a completely different story altogether. And they only use the IP because they know telling that different story doesn't sell.

There is another problem with Hollywood, which is the fear of the new. When people make their own stuff, like Ryan Johnson, it works, but them trying something pre established, like Star Wars, is a disaster. For me, fanfiction has been a stepping stone to the real thing. I've written fanfiction before. My first one sucked, and I learned from the mistakes I've made and tried again and this time, I've noticed it's gotten better and now I've actually got enough original content that I can separate it from the IP and am trying to fill in gaps and rework the story to work as a completely original story that I hope to publish someday

I never thought I'd see anyone that was so out of touch that they thought TRoS and Kenobi were awful because they adhered too closely to canon in an attempt to appease fans. Because everyone knows that what fans wanted was having Anakin's story rendered pointless by Palpatine just coming back from the dead after Anakin redeemed himself by giving his life to save Luke and kill Palpatine. Or that they wanted to find out that actually Obi-Wan and Vader totally met and fought again between episode 3 and 4 despite that not matching what we were told in ANH and finding out that Obi-Wan had another chance to kill Vader but wimped out and explicitly spared him so that he could go on to commit more atrocities. Those were totally things that were written for fans of the Lucas era canon alright.

Hollywood has always had an uneasy relationship with canon. From the very beginning, a studio would buy the rights to a story, throw out everything, and rewrite it. When MGM bought the rights to Agatha Christie's Poirot and Marple novels, they gave Poirot to comedy director Frank Taslin and turned "The ABC Murders" (one of the genre's first serial killer novels) into "The Alphabet Murders" starring Tony Randall as Poirot.

If someone finds the task of adding to another's work 'limiting' they are stating one of two things: -Their lack of talent is 'limiting' their ability to write something coherent within that world. -Their overblown ego is 'limiting' their willingness to write something within another's world. Very likely both, as incompetence and the inability to recognise one's own limitations often go hand in hand with overblown ego. I know this is obvious to those who possess reason but seemingly not all people are reasonable, especially certain 'writers'. If you are a writer your function is to tell stories, fact or fiction. For there to be a story there has to be a narrative that makes consistent sense. So people who dislike narrative sense, including consistency, are purveyors of nonsense. They are no more than monkeys randomly bashing away at typewriters. I don't believe I have any reason to care what a random character generator has to say.

Fan fiction has been very popular lately. But is it good? I write and publish books myself, and I know how much it costs an author to create a universe in which the action of his work takes place. I have to come up with history, traditions, culture, whole societies, political systems, characters' personalities and their past. Heck, sometimes I even have to come up with costumes and language! Do you know how much energy and time this takes? Yes, it doesn't always work out perfectly for me, but it's not easy to build a world from scratch. And then someone comes along who takes the world I've created, has everything ready and claims that he can write better than me. He takes my deep-thinking characters and.... changes their gender, changes their race, changes their sexual orientation just because he thinks he knows better. But if you, dear fan fiction author, are so good, why don't you build your own world from scratch? If you're so good, why steal someone else's world and remake it in your own way? You don't really give anything from yourself, you just push well-marketed or politically correct schemes into the hard work of someone else. It used to be that fan fiction was a way of showing respect to the author and his work. Now it's a way for the exuberant egos of people who can't create anything of their own to trample on the hard work of the original author who spent years creating his world. Current fan fics are a mockery of the author and a way to prove to him that anyone can write a story better than him, and then we have such Rings of Power. What kind of message is this sending to real authors? Let's not create anything new, let's write fan fiction. It doesn't require finesse, it doesn't require effort, and that's what will be screened.

You could just see the arrogance and the hubris of these pathetic writers claiming that they could do better, if they do, then why even take IPs that they don't like to begin with. We ignored the next 2 movies by the same creator after finding out they were even worse. We went to Star Wars episode VII, which started with interesting characters, but then devolved into nonsense action. We skipped episode VIII and IX, but I know from reviews they’re not canon and full of plotholes. I loved The Witcher season I. We watched season II but it felt off, with random deaths, and dinosaurs attacking. After reading/watching reviews I learned they strayed far away from the actual stories. I read and watched some reviews on Rings of Power, and I know it’s not for me. A shame these writers want to have “fun”, at the expense of viewers, fans and things actually making sense (both within their own story, and in canon).

I love visual media but it’s getting to the point that I will only read books and ignore these screen translations. The ONLY message corporations listen to is lack of financial return.

A couple of years ago I talked about this in relation to the Last Jedi and Rain Johnson. Directors are being hired and given too much leeway with movies they don't want to create. Johnson had no desire to create a star wars film, but he did want to make a film that recreated 12 O'Clock High. He couldn't get anyone to buy off on his 12 O'Clock high remake so when he was given free reign in Star Wars he ignored canon so he could get most of the movie he wanted. You've likewise mentioned this with the witcher and the "creative team" hating the source material. The issue is NOT that canon shackles writers, but that studios keep hiring writers who don't want to write a story for the franchise they've been hired into. This makes for a painfully simple solution, just find a competent writer who DOES want to write a Lord of the Rings film, or a witcher film, or whatever franchise it is.

But you clearly have not watched Andor and have blanked it for 9 weeks because it does not do what you have accused them of doing in this video. It's the best written drama this year by a long way.

This is the exact discussion I have with my 5-year-old when we're playing games and he's not winning so he wants to change the rules so he can win. Every time I tell him if you change all the rules we're not playing the same game anymore. He at least, a 5 yo, has the stones to admit that and just says "yeah I want to play my game not this." People like the author of this article are literally children. They don't want to follow any rules, they don't want to work hard for anything and if it all goes wrong it is always someone else's fault. It's truly sad to see these literal adult children. -Dan

I ran a 7-year long ttrpg campaign set in the Star Wars universe during the Clone Wars. We played once-twice a week, for 8+ hours every session, and I frequently tied material back to the canon universe (and Expanded Universe canon as well) using Wookieepedia as my primary source of research. If I can do that, without ruining the previous works, then these highly paid Hollywood writers should be able to pull off something a fraction as good. They can't, though, because unlike them, I am a fan of the setting and put actual love and effort into my stories.

the bad thing is when shows based on great IP's fail the writers will blame the IP and not their own failures, which is why we still get the same regurgitated crap with the next show, and when that fails they continue to blame the IP or the the "toxic" fan base.

Imagine a freelancer that sends their work to a client and the client says "What is this? This isn't what I asked you to do. I gave you a very clear document, parameters and examples of what I was looking for". Freelancer: "Yeah, I saw those and I just found them very limiting, it simply wasn't fun to my job. So I decided to do what I always wanted to do with it. If you weren't so closed minded you could see how good it is" Client: "I do not care if it is good or not, this isn't what I asked for. You were supposed to de precisely what the documentation said, it was all there. I can't pay you if you do not do what I asked. This is my pet project, I can't let you sabotage it." Freelancer: "Ok, I get this is your pet project, and you love it. But if you really love it, you would set it free. Limitations is the enemy on any creative process" Client: "You know what? I am not even going to pay you for that, I will go to another freelancer. One that does it right". Freelancer: "OMG, why are you so toxic?"

Whenever I hear this sort of talk it's like a young fanfiction writer who believes their special characters or direction is legitimately better than the original. I know some stories have some great fanfictions, but those pale in comparison to the amount that are bad and abandoned. Except in this situation, they are actively hurting the source by not respecting what made it great rather than on some corner of the internet for fun as most FF writers do. It's an honestly great outlet to learn and explore your ideas, many abandoned because they realize the idea didn't have as much driving weight as they once thought or simply lack the writing chops to see it through to the end. Some get bored but in that context it's fine, it doesn't hurt anyone or anything. These people though, they don't seem to realize a lot of the time that their actions with these stories have consequences, but seemingly don't care because they actually feel they're right and their ideas are better than the story that pulled itself up to the point of getting an adaptation. It's a level of arrogance and callousness that will never stop astounding me. What a real shame.
