my favorite theory explaining awakenings is that the user has to embody the dream that created the fruit. either naturally or they change over time to more suit the concept that drives their powers. which is why some users take decades to awaken while others can seemingly awaken in very short periods by comparison. doffy was a manipulator, luffy brings happiness where ever he goes, law is a doctor, etc. personally i'd be more then satisfied with an explanation like this one or something similar.

But what did Luffy do to embody his fruit at the moment he did awaken that he hadn't done better before? If you take it as happiness, he didn't trigger it at the time of awakening. If you take it as freedom, then the will to fight Kaido certainly is a strong drive for freedom. But what about THAT moment was more freedom-granting/embodying than all the other times he devoted himself to the same fight, or devoted himself to freedom at other times/places?

I don’t think the magic system in One Piece is hard. On the contrary, I think the reason Oda tends to give all sorts of powerful abilities to complete bystanders is because aside from the sea water limitations for devil fruit users, there is literally nothing that would prevent the creation of a fully omniscient and omnipotent omega level god in the One Piece world. Oda already mentioned that the reason he chose to tell a pirate story is because in this fashion, he can make the world as big as the imagination, with every little island being its own universe, tailoring the laws of physics and environmental design to match whatever tale he wants to tell this time.

From what vegapunk said about devil fruits being passed down "wills", I think that they are the "crystallization" of someone/something's "essence", aka their skills and aspirations honed to their limit, and haki, that existence, making each fruit being unique even when they basically do similar things, the combination made their essence reach a "supernatural" level and after their death, their strong will/haki persisted and formed a devil fruit that "imitates" or "elevates" it to the most pure and extreme form to pass down. The awakening could require a resonance between the will that birthed the fruit and the will of the new user, if close enough it will awaken, otherwise it requires the new will to be strong enough to overpower the predecessors', that may or may not be feasible. Awakening for zoans would be simpler as it would require them to practically be one with the "animal", thus the abundance of the "officially" awakened at impel down as, let's be honest, it's a den of freaks, that's probably also why chopper can't awaken properly, he's too pure, as how his supposed awakening looks, the og will probably view the humans as a terrifying and cruel existence thus for chopper to awaken he needs to accept that dark being is also a side of humans that he "loves" so much, the opposite may be true for kaido, dragons are revered as gods, cruel sure but also beings of providence and majesty, he just uses the "terrifying existence" aspect instead of the many more nuances it has, I presume momonosuke will awaken his sooner or later, that's also why I think we don't see many logia or paramicia awakened, as most of them see their fruit not as something they aspire but a nifty tool or power for their own gain, their lack of "passion" for the "concept" of their dv explains why they don't awaken but also why people like doffy and katakuri do awaken as they seem to into the very core of their df and use it to their extreme potential even before even awakening it, probably the reason they awakened it in the first place, it could also explain why luffy didn't awaken sooner, he just viewed his power in its most basic power of rubber thus essentially just stretching himself, only after training with haki and rayleigh he truly leans on the more extreme creative side. I think that brook could be a candidate for awakening as, he is now obtained the greater power to control his "soul" im general and influence others' souls, not just guiding his own soul back to his body, becoming literally the soul king could prompt his awakening, as for robin, she probably needs to be able to be seamless between her and the extra body parts, blurring if not removing the line between the real and the bloomed her, as conceptually something that bloomed feom something is technically still that something, for now it doesn't seem that she regard those parts more than "extra summons" so her awakening may be still far if she awakens at all. An example of possible a future, post story devil fruit, imo, it could be a mythical zoan, "hito hito no mi model: asura", born from zoro, with the effect of giving the user the asura form, the awakening condition being a very high mastery, "obsession" and determination to be the best in what they do.

@@RomanceDuskEN thinking back, I don't think luffy did really awaken his fruit, since we now know it's a zoan and that normally zoan fruits have 3 forms, base, hybrid and full transformation, I think that the supposed "base luffy" was him unconsciously being in his hybrid form all this time since he thought it was the gomi gomi no mi thus turned into a "rubber man", gear 2 to gear 4 are not fit to be "zoan forms" since they are technique and haki enhanced versions of the hybrid form, kinda like what lucci did in enies lobby with the combination of life return technique in his hybrid form, gear 5 should not be his awakening but luffy fully transforming into the "feral" form

@@RomanceDuskEN absolutely could be just design, but I'm looking at it like even in flashbacks that came as recent as Zou about Shanks saving Luffy and losing his arm, there's been no touch ups to show it was actually Conquerors Haki and that's something we've inferred. The series could end with never going back and touching up things to give newer design choices like that. Or the Impel Down jailers lost themselves to the beast side of the fruit, awakening the beast and not the fruit

It's possible that the clouds of Awakened Zoans are associated with the idea of Wisdom Kings, and are an indicator, not of Awakening itself, but that the user is in sync with the Will of their Devil Fruit. In Lucci's case, his evil nature may align with his Devil Fruit especially well, and it's only now that he's been able to fully embrace that part of himself as a CP0 agent that the clouds and the Awakening present themselves. With Yamato, her Zoan is considered a guardian of Wano, and because of her desire to protect Wano she's already in sync with it. As for Momonosuke and Kaido, I think they actually are in sync with their Devil Fruit, but in different ways. In Momonosuke's case, he is in sync with the 'fish climbing up the waterfall' aspect of the Devil Fruit, while Kaidou is in sync with the 'dragon that was once a fish' aspect. That, or Vegapunk's artificial Zoan perfectly imitated the physical aspects of Kaidou's Devil Fruit down to the Awakening, and Momonosuke simply hasn't mastered those abilities yet due to inexperience. It should also be noted he was still able to slightly injure Kaidou without Advanced Haki, which says a lot about how powerful Vegapunk's Artificial Devil Fruits actually are. This is all conjecture of course, but Hyogoro specifically mention that Luffy looks like a Wisdom King while transformed in Gear 4th, implying that an imperfect Awakening may have aspects of the Wisdom King form. Of course, Wano at large doesn't know what Devil Fruits are, so...

For chopper: it's almost like he's asleep the first time he transforms and is showing the will of the original dreams intent. As his will gets stronger his will overpowers the devil fruit and is able to control it. "Awakening" is a full understanding of the will inherited to the point you can apply it. Edit: as soon as he accepts he is a monster. Someone probably wanted that monstrous power but he, always being called a freak, turns that stuff away. Only through wanting to be stronger for his allies dreams does he find a strong will of his own.

I'm pretty sure that Kuzan and Akainu already awakened their fruits, my theory is the awakening of Logias consists of not only changing their sorroundings into their element (as happens with Paramecias) but those changes remaining, Punk Hazard is the evidence of that, the hot part and the cold of the island didn't cancel each other, they remained.

To me Enel was awakened. At the end of the conflict, when he becomes that giant electric avatar, that's not typical for any other logia user we've seen. I believe becoming an avatar or elemental of the element of the fruit would be a good awakening idea for a logia, like a sand golem/living sand storm, a magma/ice/fire giant/elemental, etc. Also, to me Pica and maybe even Magellan in his deadly poison phase were also awakened, because the amount of power and control of their fruits was too great to even compare to most of other paramecia type fruits. Pica can be assimilated inside rocks, but one thing is to hide in the rocks, and another one is to control and morph them to the point of creating a rock titan with full control of every inch of rock.

Kaido said something a long the lines of an awakening being when a devil fruit users mind and body manage to match the power of the devil fruit. I took that to mean that essentially, no matter what your devil fruit does, you can build your body up to be even more powerful than the abilities it grants you. Once you've done that, your devil fruit "awakens" to new abilities your body couldn't handle using before. We didn't get a confirmation if big mom and kaido, but big mom did do some weird shit, like using her own soul on herself, and kaidos giant magma dragon form. It's possible that big mom and kaido are already so strong and their fruits are so broken, they've never actually pushed themselves to the limit where their bodies exceed their devil fruits abilities.

K so I have a theory that the devil fruits have a actual devil in them and when you first eat them the devil is asleep, therefore don't have the full power. when you awaken your fruit you catch up with your fruit's devil (I think Kairi said something about this) and awaken it just like the name says therefore unlocking the true power of an awaken devil. Edit: I also think that chopper's rumble ball is him artificially awakening his devil, but his body hasn't caught up with his devil so he loses control resulting is his mystery form.

I personally have always thought from their first introduction that the “awakened” jailer beasts were some sort of forced awaken. Kinda like you said with Choppers rumbled ball Monster point and that’s why they have more of a basic and just physically buffed design.

my own theory involves a fruits synergry with its holder, like how law's medical knowledge benefits the ope ope no mi, because of this the fruit is better in his hands compared to someone who doesn't have any medical knowledge. Same for Vegapunk and a few others. I think the synergy between the holder and the fruit will determine awakenings, if they are even possible I think for example because chopper doesn't have synergy with his devil fruit he can't obtain the mythical awakening like lucci and kaku have. The guards at the prison probably also have bad synergy with their fruits but managed to awaken the fruit enough to gain that monstrous form. Chopper used medical science to trigger an artificial awakening which is why its similar to the guards and why the draw backs to it are so high. In kind while Buggy does make good use of his devil fruit, he also didn't want it, plus his own stupidity causes him to not utilize his devil fruit fully so it'll not be possible to awaken it despite how long he's had it. Meanwhile doffy and the string fruit have quite a lot of synergy so it makes sense why he was able to awaken it. As for Big Mom I think she's too emotionally unstable to properly connect with her devil fruit she didn't even know it was a devil fruit power she just thought she had the same magic as mother caramel. A person can have a devil fruit for a long time but without the proper synergy an awakening can't happen.

If I remember right, he even stated that the chop-chop was limited to that it could only divide where he had been cut before. So, while he can divide himself to evade a blow, the blow will not cause his fruit to activate unless it manages to sever his skin

Kaido is awakened because seiryuu is the belief that a carp climb’s up a waterfall pass the torii gates and becomes a seiryuu (azure dragon) but kaido carp form would look like a alligator gar fused with a carp but think about it in this light zoan fruits change your dna to that specific animal cause Elon musk said that if you change or alter the dna you can turn into a butterfly or something that’s why zoans when they awaken they become feral because they’re genetically wild animals and if vegapunk was working on kaido’s lineage factor after this “awakening” then mono’s fruit would be already “awakened” by the time he eat the fruit in that sense. plus awakenings are the perfect melding of the devil fruit user mind body will and soul a complete and absolute understanding of your abilities that’s why most recent awakened zoans look humanoid is kaido being “awakened” it’s possible

The clouds are called hagoromo... that is a piece of clothing "celestial beings" from japanese mythology wear... it might as well have been confirmed that the hagoromo is a marker for a ZOAN awakening... not that is was... but pretty much having kaku and lucci both having it is as best as we are gonna get for it since they have "normal" zoans and still get it... Luffy's hagoromo in Gear 4th was incomplete... it was just like vapor coming out of his body rather than the Fiery Hagoromo the confirmed awakened zoans exhibit... So 99.9% sure yamato was also an awakened zoan... again not confirmed... but pretty much that is what was shown... Also the jailers form impel down were also confirmed to be... "failed" (for the lack of a better word) awakenings and they lost part of their minds and gave in to their primal instincts...

I have a small theory that these clouds (or not clouds) around the neck could be not just a design choice to look cool, but also perhaps they kinda signify that this person either has conqueror's haki or/and royal blood, because iirc, the irl source of these clouds has something to do with royalty, and out of all seen persons with this things, they all either had conqueror's haki (lucci, luffy for example) or royal blood (or god-like significance of the zoan/etc) (yamato, ryugu family for example)

9:50 ok yah i can see where your coming from but the clouds of yamamotos Okuchi no Makami in thier hybrid and full zoan transformations is different i theorize that the clouds coming off the lucci, kaku, and luffy are from a zoan awakining that is "tamed" or a zoan awaking where the zoan user maintains their sentience. the smoke hugs thier body from what the manga panels show although it might be more clearer about the differences in the anime while chopper could be sentient and have his devil fruit awakened it was done through artifical means so that might explain why he doesnt have the smoke pattern

Kaido has an awakened fish fish fruit model carp. The fruit is modeled after an Eastern mythology story about a carp who manages to swim up a water fall to the top of a mountain where it is rewarded for the hard work by being transformed into an Eastern style dragon. They have the same thing in the Pokemon games where Magicarp evolves into Gyarados. In chapter 999 Big Mom in a flashback reveals she gave him the Fish Fish fruit(doesn't specify the model) the day of the God Valley incident. He also does have the smoke around his body in different forms, specifically his hybrid form has the smoke as an accent down his spine and as a beard. Studying the lineage factor for Kaido after he awakened and his fruit transformed would also explain how Vegapunk was able to make a new devil fruit, by desireing to create a dragon fruit that did not already exist(Kaido's was an awakened fish fruit) and having access to prevoid century tech he made a completely new fruit. It just happened to be a pink dragon and there are no rules against a dragon being pink.

The man who gives us our first hint and our first explicit mention of awakening is more than likely awakened. Logia types can gain the ability to permanently alter their environment. We've got three overt examples. It can explain the bizarre features of many islands. It's also the exact ability that Crocodile describes and demonstrates in a way that gets mirrored by Doffy later on. It's just parsimony to consider this awakening.

My biggest issue with the desire theory is katakuri and doflamingo, i have no clue how doflamingo or katakuri can achieve the desire of whoever wanted the mochi fruit and the string fruit. Both fruits are seemingly random paramecia and it just seems odd that someone had an intense desire to rule a kingdom with string. Or eat donuts in the case of katakuri i guess haha. My theory for devil fruits has to do with the lineage factor. Devil fruits affect lineage factor, and somehow carry the desire of someone, what if someone's most childish desire resides in their lineage factor and by eating a devil fruit your lineage factor changes to enact whoevers lineage factor was in the fruit

Clouds have to be part of the deal, but it is worth noting that awakening is using the fruit at 100% capacity and takes a toll on the body. So maybe not everyone is "able" to do it. Would also explain why the big bosses didn't use it, if they had it. However Lucci and Kaku seem to piss on this rule for some reason.

well in buddhism the clouds represent deities.I think it represents the ascension from the human stage to the devine, here is were the statement of vegapunk comes into play on how rare it is for especiallly zoans to not lose your mind to the will of the fruit! hence why the jailer beast have no clouds cause the original user lost their mind and simply became demonic beast and while and lucci doesnt because he overcame it and therefor ascendet. for awakenings itself kaido mentioned when your mind and body catshes up to the fruit which would be a full embodiment of ones fruit hence why kaido wasnt the azure dragon is not a war monger or war seeking its a guardian deity therefore only unleashing his destructive power to protect over which it resides if enemies threatens that. wouldnt be suprised if momo awakens the fruit becaus he represents it better nonetheless kaido was impressive to me he didnt need awakening its like charakters dont need ACC to be a threat

Even with following the will of the first user. I think the awakening difficulty and control difficulty are inversely proportional and going: Zoan awaken with relative ease but the animal has a will of its own. Paramecia takes some effort to awaken and you spread yourself thin using it Logia takes dedication to awaken but once there you can forever change your surroundings.

I feel these clouds are more related to haki than devil fruit....a weird form of busoshoku than some people get....or maybe only zoans get cuz we have only seen it with zoans so far. So, when boundman came into being, and then snakeman, Luffy got those clouds and both forms are basically air in his muscles (as opposed to bones) and haki surrounding his limbs mainly. We see it with Lucci and Kaku, both when they awakened, but still, and also Yamato. It may be a subconscious use of busoshoku haki surrounding zoan types....kinda like the will of their inner beast or something.... different from awakening. It's just prominent in Lucci and Kaku for awakening tho...but for Luffy and Yamato it's in their regular "hybrid" forms......

I have a theory that Brook will awaken his devil fruit to revive the member of the strawhats that will die and that Brooks devil fruit will be used in its awakened form to remove the immortal status of those who used the immortal surgery provided by the Opi Opi Nomi fruit. the near death thing is somewhat correct but nika fruit requires to be to be insync with the will of the devil fruit high lvl haki applications and then to die luffy died during that fight otherwise they wouldn't have said they couldn't hear his sound especially momonosuke so luffy died and got a new lifespan to complete awakening as we all know rubber fruit or nika fruit require lifespan to burn to use it's more advanced applications meaning to awaken it completely is to jump in life lvl so as to increase the lifespan available to burn so luffy had to get a new life span also nika is referred to as a god in one piece and other zones also show a similar nature in increasing lifespan after awakening meaning to awaken a zoan devil fruit is to jump in life lvl in which the easiest most complicated and will enhancing is the so called threat of death but in all actuality all zoan devil fruit eater have all died once

Also dismissing Vegapunk mentioning that Zoans have two Awakened Forms. One is the Jailer Beasts, as Vegapunk mentions the will of the fruit can overtake the user, and the other is Lucci who keeps control. Kaku is in a similar position, as he is also an Awakened Zoan with the flaming ribbon.

I don't remember, that Vegapunk said, there are two type of Zoan awakenings. This is at the moment a thesis from the community, not a confirmed fact in the narrative. We will have to wait and see how awakenings truly work in the story and how they are triggered!

I think the awaken devil fruit user, just use their ability, in the most creative way, for marvel, magneto can control metal and magnet, so how did do somet similar to awaken, he can control the magnetic pull of the planet. Or quirk awakening, with twice and toga quirk. Where their ability are used in a way that it is attended to be. Or if I had to make a random devil fruit awakening, jacket fruit user, turning people into jacket, and using their devil fruit. Or another one, buggy having the ability to chop people into pieces, and he can control them.

i think that zoans can awake 2 ways . either they train hard enough to take control the zoan power (lucci yamato luffy kaido.ect ) gets awaken cloud. luffy starts to have cloud on gear 4 after 2 years training with Rayleigh after more fights against hard oppenents like doffy and katakuri he gets stronger and got snakeman with more thicken clouds or the zoan takes control of them and becoming a beast like in impel down they are the people that fails to awaken properly but still gets the durability but loses humanity

Near death experience has nothing to do with it. This is the theory I believe. It was confirmed that devils fruits have a mind of there own, so not only do they need the strength to awaken, they also have to align with it. Take luffy or lucci they completely align with the fruit as well as have the strength to awaken, were as kaido and big mom have the strength but don't align with it. For example kaido actively trying to kill himself wouldn't align with the fruit. Also from what we know for conquers haki you must have a kingly desire and will. I like to believe everyone has the capability to obtain it, like the other versions, but having both the desire and will is rare. For example sanji doesn't have a kingly desire even tho I believe he has the will, so he hasn't obtained it. He might never get it, but I hoping he does.

I don't think Luffy has even awakened his DF power... I think he has only now tapped into his actual DF ability as a Zoan fruit... Because till The fight with Kaido, he has been using the fruit as a paramecia type using one of the many abilities that the fruit possesses which is freedom of body modification or abilities of rubber...I think gear 5 luffy is just luffy in base DF mode but this time actually using his DF correctly, i mean if it isn't and that's his awakening, then how else would he be able to power up for laughtale? Because I honestly think he isn't powerful enough to take on Teach yet and him just beating Blackbeard(Teach) because of his Haki, would be a let down as if the anime just discard all his progress in using his DF correctly just to say his Haki was all he needed to win. So I think Luffy is still yet to awaken his DF... and I think the drums of liberation sounding is just saying that Sun God Nika (Joyboy) has finally been reincarnated or reborn. But that's just my theory.
