What forever pisses me off about this movie is how there was so much POTENTIAL. So, so, so much potential to make this movie a knock-out. Make this one amazing, especially since it stars a BIPOC female lead and they fumbled the ball so painfully, incredibly badly it's not even funny

What was the deal with the green possession stuff? Both Magnifico and Simon were under this enchantment, but Magnifico gets sealed in a mirror and chucked in a dungeon for all eternity while Simon gets a slap on the wrist? Was the green magic corrupting them, bringing out their worst sides? Once Asha was given the magic wand, couldn’t she just have removed the evil green stuff? Wth does it even represent? Addiction, mental illness, abuse of power? What was even the point? Without the possession, Magnifico could have still grown mad with power and Simon could have still turned on his friends to maintain his wish come true.

exactly!!!!! that green magic DID NOT make simon snitch on asha he CHOSE TO BETRAY HER. and then once the betrayal happened it lead to so much chaos. he literally PUT HER LIFE IN DANGER.
@generalcodsworth44172 ай бұрын
I think the idea is Simon was under a more basic mind control while Magnifico was corrupted to his very core. Why the magic wand couldn't help? Thats a plot hole

I have raged about this movie since the trailers came out, cuz it was so bad. From the writing to the animation. I think the only character I liked was the turtle which I’m sure most people forgot Every other character was just bad. They had no clear purpose or direction of where their characterization was supposed to go. And it is partly because Disney, the company, rushed their staff to hell and back. They were really far into the original concept of having Star be a magical man(which i don’t care for it was just Jack Frost 2) and Magnifico and Amaya being the ultimate evil power couple and some other stuff. Sucks cuz that original concept had Amaya be an interesting and active character, rather than a background character that you can’t decide if she’s complicit or just dumb as bricks until the very end. Plus we never had a Disney evil pairing that actually loved each other, that would have been so fun. “Love conquers all” taking on a new meaning It’s also probably why I don’t see those two portraying abusive relationships in the movie. For the most part Amaya was very shocked and concerned her husband became (comically) evil-out of nowhere. I think that’s a major problem here, the evil progression comes abruptly. We don’t know Magnifico’s motivations for getting to this point, because they scrapped it all He originally wanted to steal the power of the Star for himself and be all powerful. Simple and easy concept to get behind. But since they scrapped it, he just didn’t have anything going on for himself. He wanted to be rich? Can’t be, he’s already king and “let’s everyone live here for free and doesn’t even charge them rent”. Was greedy for magical power? We establish VERY late in the movie he didn’t even know he could drain people’s wishes to boost his magic, so it’s not like he sought out to gain more power. The only real possible motive we got was that he wanted to prevent a great catastrophe he went through for others, and they can’t even tell us what that catastrophe was honestly. They are so vague of this guy’s intentions it made him look like a pretty benevolent king that was somewhat vain, but genuinely cared for his subjects, and wanted to run a safe kingdom that had no hardships. But because Disney remembered they needed him to be a villain, they said “ah yeah uh……this book that we never explain where it came from, turns people completely evil, sorry no reversing the effects he meets a tragic fate and it’s technically not his fault”. Amaya sure made it sound like it. And sure enough the reason this was so off? The original concept back when they were both an evil power couple that wanted to steal Star’s power? Yeah they established the reason they collect people’s wishes was to boost Magnifico’s power from the start. This movie just does that, they take concepts of what they scrapped but they don’t work out of context You don’t necessarily need to know why the Evil Queen wanted to be the most beautiful, you just need to know she wants to be fairest of the land, and Snow White is preventing that. You don’t need to know why Maleficient is wicked, you just need to know she was not invited to a royal Christianing as a royal herself, and used that offense as an excuse to mess with this baby. For Magnifico to go from “wants to protect wishes” to “power hungry comedic villain because a book influenced him” with no correlation whatsoever, he’s just forgettable as a villain and as a character So now you have people say Asha is the TRUE villain for messing with a decent guy and like no. Her greatest offense was just making a bunch of stupid decisions, but again, that is every single character in this movie

A big issue is how they seemed to rely more on Easter eggs than the actual plot. I enjoyed the idea of Star, whether he was the incarnation of Asha's grandfather (which was bittersweet) or her love interest (it's said that they're "soulmates," but that may not be romantic; us Disney fans are romance-starved, lol). But Asha having 7 friends just as a Snow White reference was a poor idea since they only embody each dwarves' primary trait. Plus her family is probably the least fleshed-out of any 21st century Disney protagonist. And I say this everywhere: Amaya's VA revealed during auditions, Amaya was the sole villain and by callbacks, she was a good guy. I'm assuming the villain couple was in-between these two ideas, but the final product seems like a last-minute change, explaining why Amaya is bland and why Magnifico still comes off as having a point and being somewhat sympathetic.

Asha feels like they Frankensteined a bunch of traits from past Disney princesses, and dropped them as the movie continues. She wants to help her grandfather like Mulan wants to help her father, but we see Mulan interact with her father way more than we see Asha and her grandfather. Mulan’s dad’s outburst also makes more sense because the stakes are significantly higher. She mentions she likes to draw in one scene and it never comes up again, Rapunzel similarly likes to paint but that’s also a huge plot point. Snow White spends her entire movie building up a connection with the dwarves but Asha’s friends have like 5 seconds of screen time each. I wanted to love Wish I really did, I love Asha’s design and the basic premise of an evil king using people’s wishes for his own gain. But they don’t expand on any of the ideas that they throw at you so it all feels wasted.

Concerning my frustrations with Asha and Magnifico specifically: 1. Asha is an archetype, not a character. She screams "Disney princess" on paper, but has no growth or flaws. There's no introspection; Tiana learned to appreciate the things that matter, Raya overcame trust issues (albeit not the best way), Judy realized her implicit bias, Elsa learned to love herself, Moana rediscovered a piece of her culture, Hiro processed his grief, etc. EVERYTHING important to Asha, from her friends to her grandfather's wish to her dad inspiring her, are featured very little. Asha is always right, she never makes a mistake, and her personality is very much in line with so many Disney females of the renaissance era. I would've LOVED if she was a shy lead, or if we wanna go for a nuanced "everyone is kinda right" story, she could start off selfish and let it push her "every wish should be granted" ideal until a bad wish is granted and she needs to reverse it. The people of Rosas are also to blame, since giving their wishes is voluntary, and it's very clear that Magnifico isn't granting every one, but they use him as a scapegoat of "you led us astray" instead of "we were all too reliant on you." And side note, but I really wish she'd worn the orange dress from the concept art; it stands out from other Disney princesses, and the purple felt too reminescent of Isabela Madrigal and Rapunzel. 2. Magnifico is...a trainwreck. I definitely got King Triton vibes from him at first as a misguided ruler, but then they did a random heel-turn that confused the heck out of me. The trailers made it seem like he was always stealing wishes for power, but in actuality, he just does it by accidentally absorbing Sakina's when he tries to destroy it. Not to mention his goals were kinda confusing; he's already the creator and king of Rosas, so pursuing more power doesn't make sense to me. Amaya's VA revealed that during the audition process, Amaya was the only villain and Magnifico was a good king, but this changed by callbacks. Weirdly, they kept the sad backstory and Magnifico's "not every wish should be granted" mentality is kinda right. Why keep that if they were gonna make him a villain? They could've easily made him a non-villainous antagonist at odds with Asha (like a more intimidating Yen Sid), or someone with no good points to make and is just a pure villain. The inconsistency with it is why so many people are at odds of whether he's a hero or a villain, even though the film (kinda) tried to make him the latter. And concerning his design, I really liked the gold and blue particolored look he had; it gave me "King Stefan" vibes, which fits so well since "Sleeping Beauty" supposedly inspired this film.

I saw Wish when it was still in theaters. And the way I describe my feelings towards it is that it's basically like trying to eat a half baked cake. Even if it wasn't as bad as I worried it would be, it still needed more time in the oven to really get the full flavor right. I did love the end credit song though. A Wish Worth Making lives rent free on my playlist.

@emuanon342 ай бұрын
Basically my issue has to do with how poorly the revolutionary plot line was handled, I didn’t like that the villain had a point as to why he doesn’t grant all the wishes because it makes it seem like Asha might have doomed the kingdom by granting wishes willy nilly not taking into account that some wishes are actually pretty dangerous.
@Vividaeciq-dl9rfАй бұрын
The biggest issue I have with this movie is that the villain had literally no motivations to do what he did. He had nothing to gain by keeping all of his supporting hostage or hoarding wishes. But he had plenty to lose by doing this. He was supposed to be this return to the classic Disney villain, but most of his predecessors had clear motivation. Usually it was money or power, which Magnifico already had plenty of.

One of the few things I liked about Wish’s world-building is that they stablished right away that magic is something that can be learned through studying instead of something you can only have if you’re born with it like seems to be the case in most Disney movies, it adds another layer of tyranny to Magnifico’s character because it implies that he also gets to choose what knowledge his people get to have or not and keeps the best for himself and those who work for him

I actually love Wish, it's one of my favorite Disney films - although yes, I do agree that the movie could've been a lot better and I can understand why you didn't like it. I'm glad that you recognized how awful Magnifico was - the amount of people who are out here saying that he was the hero of the film while Asha is the actual villain is very concerning to me. Like yes, as you said, Asha didn't always make the best choices, but she was trying to help people and she had good intentions. You can't say the same for Magnifico though. He did so many awful things, but yet I still see people excuse his behavior because "he's king" or "he's actually right about the wishes being dangerous" - I could honestly talk all day about why Magnifico was so terrible and why all the excuses people make up to defend him don't make sense, but I don't have enough time to fully discuss that in a KZbin comment. Also, the point you made about Simon actually made me reconsider my perspective on his character. At first, I thought that his actions were because of Magnifico mind-controlling him with the corrupt magic, but you're right - Simon chose to betray Asha out of his own free will, not because he was mind-controlled. He made that choice to betray Asha before Magnifico corrupted him with the green magic. And even when he was mind-controlled by Magnifico's magic, it still doesn't excuse what he had done. After all, Asha told him that Magnifico was evil and manipulative and yet, still chose to take his side over Asha's. So in that regard, he is still very much responsible for his bad behavior. I agree that he should've gotten some consequences for what he did and it's really disappointing that he didn't get that. So thank you for helping me to recognize that because that's something I actually didn't realize until you brought up. Anyways, thank you for making this video, I hope you'll have a great day😊

@@allinonechrista he’s just a poorly written villain. So poor all the bad stuff he does just come out of nowhere No that doesn’t mean he’s the “good guy” it just means Disney took away his original motivations and personality as they did for the other characters. So now the story fumbles and doesn’t do a good enough job convincing the audience why Magnifico is wrong in his stance w/o him being very goofy over the top with his villainy If you want an engaging story, there is typically “reason” for a bad guy’s stance on something. We are not challenged with why Magnifico’s stance is necessarily good or bad the same way with Asha. The thing we get is “you forget the most beautiful part of yourselves” but what does that mean? What does that mean for characters like Simon that can’t have that wish fulfilled? Why didn’t Sabine sing the song in the end since that was his wish, or have it where he finally recognized Asha was his wish. Are all wishes meant to be granted? If you wish to be the best seamstress of all of Rosas like that one lady wished for, what does that mean for all other seamstresses that worked just as hard? Including Asha’s mother which they didn’t bother pointing out despite being an opportunity to establish consequences It’s that kind of stuff I feel like people have trouble getting what was the message this movie was going with and why they probably don’t figure Magnifico is the villain. Yeah Asha had good intentions. Magnifico also had good intentions. That’s the problem, the story doesn’t present good arguments why either are in the right/wrong. Either this involved having a neutral solution or one of them had to be absolutely right. Some of it is racism ngl. I saw that a mile away when people cared more for generic white Hollywood guy than the MC

Upon hearing the opening statement, I’m probably what most would call a wish apologist. I have a movie review talking about it and how I like it, but the thing is I like the movie for what it was trying to do and not what it actually is. It’s a messy movie, I see what they were going for but they fumbled hard. That being power of dreams and wishes and being able to make them come true, and mix that with a story of an oppressive regime? Not a bad idea but could’ve been better. Also I don’t care if others hate it, I think it’s fun watching videos of people tearing this movie apart. What a wonderful way to bring people together.

making up little stories in my head about what wish could've been is probably a lot more entertaining than the movie itself I think maybe the wishes are what power the village- they bring magic and life to the kingdom, as well as providing practical uses like protection from bad weather or outside threats, good harvests, etc (I'm just spitballing ideas, you could come up with a lot of cool magic systems based around the concept of wish power but for now let's just say they're important to the kingdom's survival), but one day another kingdom or a monster tries to take or destroy the wishes - now it's asha's job to go on a journey to bring them back safely. Maybe the other kingdom thinks that magic is unnatural and should be destroyed, or maybe they want to steal others' hopes to make themselves seem stronger, or maybe it's a monster who's lost and doesn't really know why it's taking others' wishes; maybe we find out its own wishes were stolen from it, and as a magical being it needs them to survive- so someone would have to sacrifice theirs if they wanted to help. Lots of directions you could go with this with a lot of interesting implications! Maybe asha is the kingdom's princess, but she's always wanted to be a knight- to protect those she cares about and fight for the kingdom's hopes and dreams. That's her secret wish, and on her journey she gets to prove to her family and her kingdom that she's capable enough to make it come true. I don't think I would completely rewrite her personality- I think she could still be creative and resourceful, kind and empathetic, etc. showing that true strength isn't just about fighting or physical capability, but comes from within- your resilience and compassion for others that drives you forward. We haven't had a proper disney love story in a long while so it'd be nice to have a love interest for her as well, as an homage to their older films, but it's not necessary. I'm not really much of a writer but I feel like there's just a lot of missed potential with this film. My wish is that the artists behind it were given more creative freedom and reasonable conditions to work under, and that we'll get better films in the future.
