On March 23rd, 1847, a group of Choctaw leaders and others met in eastern Oklahoma to raise money for the starving and poor in Ireland,170 dollars were raised. This was a time in which the English crown exported MILLIONS of tonnes of produce from Ireland but refused to provide for its people.

Lol I’m Mexican. Most of us are mestizo(European and Native mixed) for one real mixed people show much more indigenous features. I did a test and I have about 40% native blood but I’m brown/short. The rest was 60% European (Spanish and French). And the tests where able to track down what regions of Mexico my indigenous blood were from and I can tell you it was pretty damn accurate. I just don’t understand the point of claiming any racial/ethnic background unless you really do have daily real life connection to it. In reality I don’t consider myself “native” or “european” but more of a culture that is a byproduct of both being mixed.

Same. I'm 53% indigenous and from Honduras. But because I look mixed, strangers have taken it upon themselves to ask "what I am" pretty much my whole life. @@danielshy9176 exactly and they do this and it forces the black skinned tribal members to only intermix usually with the incoming africans which dilutes the blood percentage much faster than european intermixing. A lot of the black native in the US were forcibly mixed with europeans or africans so the percentage is low but for some their native ancestor made a huge impact on their family lineage, some have family history residing on the same land with native tribes living amongst them for generations and then they were removed form their tribes and some were sold to europeans as children to be re-educated and then forcibly mixed with european. The darkskinned or afro mixed members were also removed and forced into slavery and mixed with africans for generations. A lot of natives in the US are at most 20% native because of this history. In the US we claim our native roots and go by the paperwork more than blood quantum because of the unique history. Our native ancestors didn't ask to be erased by the legacy of colonization and slavery and trying to force us not to claim them doesn't sit right with a lot of americans. As americans we don't take the legal set-asides for natives unless we are currently tribal members. But we acknowledge our native ancestors. For black americans many of us practice ancestral veneration. We include our native ancestors in that practice as their legacy is meant to be remembered. You will be hard fought to find a black american who didnt have a native ancestor at some point especially on the east coast. But because african genes dominate it's rare you will see it in blood. Plus in 1920 there was this act I forget the name of, but it pretty much made it ilegal to claim to be indian. So no one even claimed that sort of thing during that time era. But funny enough the tribes were actually doing extremely well during that time which was the great depression. I remember hearing stories about at one time the modoc and klamath tribes was the richest tribe in all of america becuase of our timber. But in 1950 this thing called termination hit my tribe and a few others, it was an extention of the previous act and it 'terminated' our tribe. The plan was to go to all the indian kids just getting out of highschool ie my grandmas generation, and gave them an offer A lump some of cash which I don't know the amount, but it was a lot cuz I remember hearing stories of people going out n buying brand new cars and partying for days on end Or a bunch of land. Some indains took land..... A lotta indians took the cash.... Well you gotta know that these were pretty much kids still, 18, 19 20 year olds. If given the option of either free money or a bunch of land u don't know what to do with cuz your 20 years old your gonna take the cash u can go buy booze weed and coke with ya know😹 n thats how it was for about 2 to 3 generations where im from.... Some indians did take land though.... And those old farts are pretty much all gone....but they were treated like living gods walking amogst us... Especially this one old indian named Chiloquin edison. Who built a town on the land he was given. And that town is still there today. Pretty much a rez but yeah. Lmao but during my grandmas day Chiloquin was called little chicago, cuz of all the drinking which lead to a lot of death, a lot of shootings and stabbings and fights happened in chiloquin. Today they still call it chi town lmao, but everyone there is so far removed from the rest of the world that no one here knows that the real chi town is chicago not chiloquin😹😹 tbh natives are kinda dumb. Im native myself lmao. But I think thats only cuz we're so far removed from western culture and have a strong history with it that causes indians to hate indians just for reading the bible or liking things that are considered white. Also a fun little fact since your techincally new to being native lmao The word indian doesn't come from that stupid story of Christopher columbus thinking he was traveling to India lmao that makes no sense. Back in columbuss day India was called hindustan. India was any place with dark skinned people. Africa can be India technically lmao, and by that definition america as well. The word indain comes from indigo Meaning blue black Another fun fact Indain babies have blue marks on their buts when their born. This is something only found in people in the americas I do beleive. And this lead to white people and spanaids thinking natives beat their kids but this was in fact a by product of their skin color. Ie the indigo skin color. I remember even hearing old stories of entire tribes being like a really really dark skin color with hints of blue on them. Maybe just old legends but who knows prolly those chatholics seen them and was like holy shit😹😹 and killed them without recording it lmao

The last comment Joe Rogan made was interesting about Native Americans and Hunting Seasons and game laws. I took a guy I used to work with fishing a number of years ago and he was Native American and had an ID card. We went striper fishing (striped bass) in the lower Chesapeake Bay. He was allowed to catch and keep as many as he wanted, unlike me who's white, where the limit was 2 fish per day. We ended up getting a citation by a Game Warden who was unfamiliar with the rules concerning Native Persons. I ended up going to court over it because I was looking at a fine of $4000.00. The court looked up the rule and dismissed the fine, but the prosecution then tried to argue that it was on my boat and therefore the fish were in my possession. I had been smart enough to take photos of the two fish I was allowed to keep in the boat's built in fish box and my Native friend's fish were in his cooler that he had brought on board with his name on it, plainly showing which fish were mine and which were his, the same as the photos the Game Warden presented in court. Anyway, they dismissed it and I got out of the fine.

It wouldn’t be that much of an issue if natives had a larger population to absorb all the mixed blood. They are literally in danger of being absorbed by the majority. He said at one time our family lived in Mexico, cause the Army was coming through Texas and killing Apache...so they fled to Mexico.

I know others whose family would say they are Black, or East Indian (as in from India), or Latino, or say they are from the Caribbean Islands, or Creole, or Middle Eastern, or mixed, or even Phillipino, etc. This is how some families navigated the South. People with bias are very strange. They may tolerate one group and hate another. None of this makes any sense, but neither does racism. Every time my great grandparents left the reservation they would be hunted down, kidnapped, and brought back to the reservation. They didn't want to live on the reservation because they owned their own land and wanted economic opportunities. They eventually hid behind labels to keep their land, farm, livestock, etc.

Now DNA is showing more Native American bloodlines as more people are having their DNA tested. Here is the tricky bit, my husbands family has no Native American ancestors. Your heritage is more than just a percentage, never let people take it away from you! My dad is from the Lokono (Arawak) tribe in Suriname, my mother is white (Dutch). Knowing this I would genetically be 50% native, in practise this would propably be less. The history in Suriname is pretty complex with a lot of black/asian slaves escaping the Dutch and fleeing into the rainforest knowing that they won't be chased. The indigenous people adopted a lot of the ex-slaves and they got fully integrated into the culture, as a consequence most indigenous people in Suriname are not 100% genetically indigenous. In my opinion all those people of mixed descent count as indigenous, because of their alliance to the culture and the people. It honestly saddens me that people in the US are denied their rights because of a DNA test when being indigenous means so much more in my opinion, much love and stay strong!♥

"Mixed" ancestry. I have English, Irish, Scottish, Dutch, and Cherokee based on family history, at some point perhaps I'll take a DNA test and get the exact percentages. At this point I could be up to 20% or as little 5% Cherokee. Mom's side of the family had Cherokee members on both sides, dad's side has family traditions that there is some Cherokee blood, but nothing concrete. But even if I were 99% Cherokee I wouldn't claim to be that, since there has been any sort of tribal affiliation in many years. Like, you, I'm American. That's enough.

If your parent is 50% or less of something, there is a real chance you will get few to none of those gene markers. But you are still 25% that ethnicity by birth. This is why DNA is not used to determine ethnic ancestry, but rather geneology with historical documentation such as identification documents of specific people or Dawes rolls.

Shows how closely related we are and have never technically evolved. Just mutated. Let’s not forget humans 2.0 (us) been around for 300, 000 plus years. We wiped out our other relatives. We’re the apex predators here. Always have been 🚬💀

Blood quantum can be a double edge sword sometimes. As a Native Hawaiian in order to qualify for homestead lands you have to be 50%. Unfortunately my people are a dying race, so they "blood" drops and becomes more rare to meet Hawaiians who are even 50%. Issues like these, regarding blood quantum, hinders and hurts a community as a whole as requirements such as these splits a native nation where BLOOD determines your native worth. Although blood quantum can protect the rights of Natives (due to outsiders trying to claim benefits) , it can cause damage and a sense of ostracizing too. Loved this video. ❤️❤️
@jedheart8059 Жыл бұрын
Yes. The Blood Quantum is actually meant to divide people from their own family. My 100% Ilocano Tribe grandpa married my Trail of Tears Scots Irish Cherokee grandma. Well, in my grandfather's tribe in the Philippines, I am Ilocano. There is no %. As long as I am my father's child, all my thousands of cousins are my cousins. Every single relative born with my Ilocano surname is a clan member. This quantum carp is for slaves, oppressed and suppressed peoples. My Ilocano ancestors fought a guerilla war for 400 with Spain, 10 years with the US to prevent them colonizing too. My grandfather came as an Immigrant Worker. He sent money to his sister in the Philippines to life our extended family our of poverty. If the US and Treaties signed by the Cherokee, and Chippewa since I also Chippewa too, does not recognize their bloodlines, they are losing out on millions of US citizens who would prefer to be accepted. It makes all the difference in this world. When children are separated from their families as happened when my grandma's Grandma and Great Grandparents were forced to do when they walked that walk, it effected everyone. I did not even know I was Cherokee until I turned twelve. My grandmother and father took me to a bedroom at my grandparents house. They explained to me that I was Cherokee. They did not explain why grandma never told me about it before that. When I went to the Philippines with my grandparents, after being there a month, I told my grandma, "I finally feel like I am part of a tribe. I never felt accepted and now I do " imagine all the kids who feel isolated today because they do not know their own family tree, history and never met their grandparents, great aunts and uncles and 3-5th cousins. I grew up with my huge extended extended family on both sides of my tree. My other side are Mayflower and original Colonials having arrived over 400 years ago. But most of the Native tribes also have Colonial ancestors like I do. The Trail of Tears us all about forcing Half Breeds and their children off the land. US wanted to tax the Half Breeds and not give them their fair share of land guaranteed by Treaties. For those who have researched like myself, my Great Great Great Grandmother wrote the Indian Bureau of Affairs several times. She filed the application. After hearing nothing, she wrote letters. But she like most, could not read nor write English. She paid a translator. All the documents demonstrate that Indians as they called them, all had to have legal representation to certify their affidavits and applications. So, I found that my Cherokee Reed surname ancestor kept getting filed into a Reese woman's file. Imagine it. You cannot read nor write English. You pay someone to type up what you tell them. Then, that gets sent to an agency of the government. You think you did everything right but you get rejected because your file was filed under another person's surname. In the records, people had to have a witness to identify them. People who has witnesses were rejected. If you spent a lot of time searching and researching, you can see the heartbreak, the losses of identity. This nation owes every single descendant the rights to their ancestry. My Trail of Tears Cherokee was born on a home with a dirt floor. That's what Dirt Poor means. That's what happened to people who were forced off their lands and torn from their roots, family heritage. The only thing worse is the genocide. Genocide is a reality and this nation should be opening that worm hole. It's overdue.

That is a bit ridiculous in my opinion. Many Mexicans are mixed race and that doesn’t mean they need to follow the customs of their ancestors nor of Europeans. You should know a lot of those religions are made up. Even some native tribes in Mexico have so traditions like a pagan ritual but with Catholic saints. It is basically not the same as it was before the conquest. Sure it is beautiful to keep a certain tradition but one should have an idea of what they truly believe in and what is important to them. If you are that unsure maybe look to science and it may help you decipher what is spiritual and what is just made up.

My great grandpa was born in 1886. The reason a lot of people don’t know truly where the Cherokee branch comes from. Is because the confederacy and union of the civil war FORCED or tricked native ancestors to fight (mainly for the south) by moving their reservations and promising land. Hence they got free frontline fighters.... Not sure where the Apaches are located but that could be a reason there is more confusion among Cherokees. It depends on your blood quantum of how much Native blood you have for any given Tribe to be an Enrolled Member of that Tribe. Like My dad is Hualapia & Havasupia from the Grand Canyon. Havasupia is basically a "band" of Hualapia that live Down In the Canyon, & Hualapia live on the Western Rim of the Grand Canyon. My mom is Western Shoshone/Goshute from Utah/Nevada. My enrolled tribe is with my mom's tribe (Goshute) & my blood quantum for Goshute is 1/4. Goshute is a "Band" of Shoshone, so basically im half Western Shoshone & half Hualapia. The blood quantum percentage keeps getting smaller and smaller for tribal members if the person/persons have offspring outside of the tribe. And due to geographical locations of some Reservations, some tribal members whom might have a higher blood quantum of a specific tribe, May be the result of inbreeding/incest with a distant relative. That's just "Rez Life" (No Judgment). When you take in the account of blood percentage of each tribe a person is, it'll depend on the size of the tribe (how many tribal members?), how diluted the blood quantum will be from generation to generation. Having kids with Other Tribe's or with Non-"indians", dwindles the blood quantum even more with each passing generation (unless you're incest?). ....I could be wrong with that of tribe's with higher population? But I grew up in a tribe with a smaller population. I Wonder🤔? What is the blood relation's like with higher density tribal populations? If it will Grow? Or if the blood quantum will continue to dwindle? ...not that it really matters or anything because Human is Human, right? ...the U.S. Government is just trying to keep tabs on the Natives Population to see if they will succeed in the Genocided they set out to accomplish? Or not.? Time and generations will tell... #SAVAGE🦅

They went on for thousands of years hunting mammoths until they suddenly disappeared about the same time Asian DNA started showing up on American soil. Well, at least there is a good written record for when the 'white' man arrived whose native heritage had already been erased 10 times over. One thing that we all share in common is our Neanderthal DNA. Fossil records indicate that Neanderthal's were cannibalistic. They hunted homo sapiens and used our females as breeding vessels until they, themselves went extinct, leaving stronger, faster, and more intelligent Homo Sapien Neanderthal hybrids to the future. We all come from a cruel heritage. It is up to us to shed the differences that time has put between us. I guess what I am saying is, it is time to invade another world and assert ourselves as natives there. It is kind of our thing.

The story I grew up with is this: A little Indian girl (around 4 yrs old) was found wandering alone, after an uprising between Indians and settlers. She was delivered to the Fort Sill Indian rez. She grew up and had 3 daughters, and one is my Grandmother. My Grandma lived on the rez until age 15, when he married a TX Cowboy and had 7 children, One of which is my Dad. Dad had 5 kids, (I was born in OK) none of us show any 'Indian" DNA, but a bit of 'un-known" in the mix. Also interesting, I was told all kinds of Indians were 'dumped" in Fort Sill, but the first bunch were Kiowa, and they adopted most all of the new-comers...so they blended into one tribe. That's my family's story. I did see a document at one time, saying that my great grandma, had no birth certificate as she was a 'foundling' as a small child.

Seems most don't understand genetic inheritance ; one can be of native American decent and not have detectable Indian DNA . For example I have one set of great great grandparents on my maternal side of the tree proven to be mostly native American but have yet to locate a descendant ( 3 generations or more ) with any Indian DNA . As Sally Field said " Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get " . Always remember the " Box " is huge .

In our area, DNA is used to show familial relations to existing tribal members. However, kinship alone doesn't confer membership to adults. I think people seeking an "Indian check" are missing out on the real treasure -- the ancestors' stories.

Proud member of the Cherokee nation. The 5 civilized tribes have a system for determining linage. It's called the Dawes Rolls. My family are descendants from our family on the original census, (Dawes Roll). If you aren't on the Roll then you are not considered part of the tribe... Blame Andrew Jackson for that one... We did DNA testing and no Indian blood in me. However since the American Indian isn't a distinct blood line there isn't anything to discover DNA wise. Mine came back as Arab descendants.

I grew up on a reservation as a child. Always believed I was approximately 60% "Indian" b/c I knew my father was white or mostly white as we liked to say. I was shocked to find out a couple of years ago that I am only 25% Indian and my one older sister is 27% and a younger sister is 23%. Which I didn't realize you can have the same mom and dad and be a different percentage of racial identity. Anyway, I felt like the run had been ripped from beneath me. All my life, I'm 62 now, I grew up believing I was something I'm not. Hard to fathom since the census has my maternal grandmother listed as 100% Oneida and my maternal grandfather as 75% Stockbridge Munsee. And we erroneously believed my dad was part Cherokee. He's all white. But in my heart I am 100% Native because that's how I grew up. Then I met a young woman who is 75% Native and never knew it. Thought she had darker skin b/c she was Italian or something. Race is such a fluid thing.

You were probably all 25% and it was a variation of the test. It's probably a ballpark measure. Luckily for you Cherokee recognizes anyone 25% or more so you're still good. Most tribes recognize even at little as 1/16 to qualify.
