I think the biggest difficulty for female rappers is finding an audience. They have the nigh impossible task of appealing to women (a historically low percentage of the fan base due to the inherent aggression and chauvinism in Hip Hop) while also gaining respect from men. Pop stars only appeal to their fans without having to worry about authenticity or lyrical prowess. No other genre has as much emphasis on tradition and respect for the culture as Hip Hop. Therefore a female rapper have the unfortunate task of appealing to both men and women in a way that doesn't alienate both.

@kungfusnarez5 жыл бұрын
its not hard to appeal to a male audience when your half naked. Be honest as men you like beautiful women. Or just a ok face and incredible body. I think as men we should shut the fuck up and enjoy the show. There are many female artist that dont use sex to captivate and those are the ones i connect with. I think even women agree with that. The pop stars are usually created so authenticity is created.
@Maso_Prince5 жыл бұрын
It's not really that hard tbh nowadays since Nicki after Kim is essentially the blueprint and inspo for up and coming rappers: Good music with sex appeal, fat ass, and a likeable personality. Versatility is also another major thing nowadays which is why alot of female rappers experiment with singing and ballads since that draws in more demographics. Colorism also plays into it as well unfortunately which is why Meg the Stallion and Cardi are hot right now since they're lighter skinned and younger, while Kashdoll for example hasn't really blown up despite having a lot of cosigns by people like Wayne and Beyonce

Actually, Nicki has never used a ghost writer...also The reason the new prominent female rappers like Megan, Cardi, City Girls, Asian Doll, etc. are all so similar is because they are all influenced by Nicki Minaj and their labels are trying to mold them into the next Nicki. Phil Bosh except the wigs what else did she “steal”? Rap the same? As far as I’m concerned lil Kim was never animated, Kim never had personas or at least used them in her craft, Kim was never theatrical, Kim never sang, Kim relied on the heavy tongued 90s flow which isn’t the case with Nicki, Kim never switched 5 flows in 1 song, Word play is totally different and use of literature too. Kim wore wigs, Nicki had lacefronts if anything each colour represents personas and it’s synonymous with her craft of which Kim rocked them for the heck of it. Kim was a fashion icon yes, Nicki was camp hence the outrageous clothing that represented Roman. It’s like Katy Perry and Gaga, Katy had colourful wigs for fun and Gaga rocked them to represent her work. Sir that statement shows how narrow minded you are and how much of a bandwagoner you are. I don't listen to female rap because i am fan of lyrical rap. We need a female Kendrick, Cole, Lupe to get me invested. We have Iggy singing C.R.E.A.M, Nicki singing Anaconda or Cardi/Megan singing WAP. I can't relate to this. Rapping about sex, money, gang, drugs is not my type. Where is the rap about life and real life struggle? That's what we are missing from female rappers.

Me personally, I don't listen to women rappers. I'm not against female rappers, I just don't listen to them because there's nothing I heard from them that relates to me. Most women rappers, to me, try to act too hard, make too much lyrics about sex, or make music that is not for me. I have yet to hear a female rapper make a in-depth song that made me go "wow" like how 8Ball "My Homeboy's Girlfriend" does or Immortal Technique's "Dance With The Devil". Both of those are in depth, realistic, story telling songs that made me understand and relate to it even if I wasn't there. I respect and give female rappers props but they don't speak to me. It is what it is.

@@jeremiahhardin11507 Ok I just listened to both songs and the 1st one was ok but it wasn't a story fashion, there wasn't a part 1, part 2, and part 3 to it. She talked about relations with her various family members and how her cousin was gunned down and somehow she feels responsible. I don't get how she does because the way the streets go is if people "want to kill you" then that means you probably did something you weren't supposed to but since he asked to stay with her and she denied it, for some reason she feels all responsible for it? I feel the song would've been better if she wrote a song to "the killers" talking about her cousin and how of a good person he was and go into graphic detail about them doing the actual act of murder. Now, that would've got me intrigued. The second song is just her talking about her old self and something about me as a person, I don't like to hear someone talk about theirselves throughout the whole song. There wasn't a point in the song where I thought "wow that's crazy". The song is basically "I used to be this and now I'm rich" and to me, that's not relatable.

The problem with female rappers is its obvious that labels are using them to try and finesse our money. Its like when hollywood takes a movie you already love, remake it, and cast the roles as all females as a way to finesses our money, instead of creating new interesting movies we would be happy to pay for. I've already seen this movie with better actors, why would i pay for a downgraded version of the same thing? Same with female rappers. The music industry had a problem, ppl think rap is boring and repetitive. Instead of saying "Lets find some interesting, talented artists to add to the roster" they said "instead of improving, lets just do the same boring, repetitive music but lets have women rap it instead of men". Its lazy and obviously a clear rip off of our money. And on top of all that they are fake. None of the shit they rap is true, they are just reading scripts handed to them and its obvious.

The difference is, men are judged solely on their skill. Looks and dancing as Cardi mentioned are a plus, but usually not what men do. Female rappers use their sex appeal to sell themselves in almost every instance musically. We must understand, we must present ourselves how we want to be treated. In no other line of work can one use sex appeal to advance, and be taken seriously. Lauren Hill, for example gets taken seriously. Because her focus is skill and art.

I am so disappointed in this comment section. I did not come here to hear discussions on whether or not Nicki Minaj wrote her rhymes, we're all aware of her lyrical prowess. We should be having conversations on what we can do to better influence and impact women in rap and open up peoples eyes to them and help them understand that rap is rap, and to also recognize the double standards imposed on women and that skill is skill no matter the gender. If I'm being completely honest, I feel that a good portion of this rap generation is following the "Pinkprint" and that's exactly what the problem is. Women can be proud of their sexuality and not have to flaunt it, women can wear clothes that don't expose half of their bodies and still be beautiful, sexy, and attractive. However, in the same stance, it is okay to walk the line a bit at times and break the rules. Once upon a time, you had women that were sexual and still showing respect for their bodies and still had bars. Rapsody, Queen Latifah, Lauryn, Rah Digga, Da Brat, etc. all these women weren't scantily clad only for the sexual fantasies of men, they spoke of truths of their lives that they lived, and they brought each other up without throwing shade, calling names, and starting drama. This is the image we need to restore, this is what will help women in rap be taken seriously again.

The 'problems' of yesterday has significantly decreased. F. Rapper had to fight to be taken seriously; just like any male dominated profession. Maybe they were kicked out of studios. Artists like MC Lyye, Queen Latifah, etc. did the ground work to open doors and knock down stereotyping in the late 80's - early 90's. The 90's artists like Missy, Da Brat, Lauren H., Eve, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown were all different and welcoming. The audience had not only options but were not forced to have a a preference. They were ALL doing well at the *SAME* time. There was a symbiotic relationship b/t record labels. They worked with each other directly or indirectly (maybe to protect themselves/ their artist[s] or out of respect) by not putting out singles and albums at the same time and creating unnecessary drama. The *CURRENT* 'problem' is the music industry and fans. They are pit against each other. Most rappers fall into this trap and become the aggressor, attacking each other for no real reason. The music industry operating like it's the Hunger Game, esp. towards black females (not only rappers). Unhealthy and unnecessary competitions are created to sabotage the 'competitors'. PLUS female are sexually abused on a higher level than males.

Your final comments regarding labeling of women as female rappers and not rappers is 💯. But to take it one step further most women don't get recognition in the rap game without a major record deal and once they are in the industry they become part of the cookie cutter formula. RAPSODY came into the game with strong indie projects and therefore she already had an identity. This is also true regarding Tierra Whack. Cardi b album shook up the world and destroyed the 1 hit wonder myth as well as showed the world having a team of writers is not bad. I would like to get rid of the notion that a rapper cannot be authentic if he/she is not writing their own lyrics. Yet pop culture artist have a plethora of background support and makes kazillions of dollars. From a business perspective being self contained is a good thing and with that said I think the real problem is maintaining creative control once she signs with a major.

Another thing... I think it's just inevitable that hip hop is male dominated. It's a very aggresive and masculine genre over all, which appeals to men more often than women, though still appeals to women sometimes of course, like it appeals to me and other girls I know. But how come nobody complains that POP MUSIC is dominated by females??? Because for some reason it's obvious to people that pop music appeals to a feminine audience and rap appeals to a masculine audience, overall. Just is what it is
