It’s worth mentioning that the David Lee Dino 3.6 does use a Ferrari F40 “block” and was bored out to 3.6L. The F40 engine block is ideal for the Dino because of the low height and lower center of gravity in order to accommodate the 8 velocity stack intakes. The F40 block is also ideal because of the material it is made of and it’s ability to tolerate the higher pressure of the turbos, even though the turbos have been deleted and overbored instead.
@DominicLeung87 Жыл бұрын
No way it's an actual F40 block (where are you gonna get em ? ... and why wouldn't you keep it for an actual F40 for spares ?) It probably uses a 308 or 328 block (which is actually the same block, the 288GTO and F40 engines are heavily modified versions of the 308/328 engine but the block is more or less the same)

@DominicLeung87 Жыл бұрын
@@JIMMYOXXX far more likely he got told something untrue and just ran with it cuz it sounds sexy. The f40 engine even if you got it for free would be a dumber place to start than a 308 block. You'd just lose the turbos/intercooler for some reason, you would have to bore out MORE material. Changing it to 3.6l would require new EVERYTHING anyways. Pistons, rods, crank, fuel system, engine management, cams, valves etc starting with an f40 engine and keeping just the block is retarded. Like taking the hope diamond, smashing it to bits for shards to make a tennis bracelet Just because the guy owns a lot of Ferraris doesn't mean he is intimately in touch with all of it. The dude that built that dino has a similar setup to his own but didn't go as insane with the details. The builder certainly doesn't have the fleet that DLee has, who do you think is the expert here? David or the British granpa in a shed. Having things doesn't make you an expert on those things. In fact in real life, generally the more you have the less of an expert you are paying to the fact that you're necessarily less specialized in your hobbies AND the fact you have less time for it owing to your other responsibilities in life

It was an F40 engine sans Turbo’s, bored out with 360 heads. There’s an Octane magazine article on it. Also, the Testarossa’s flat 12 was a slightly “glazed over” version of the 512BBi’s F102B engine, which had been around since late 1975... and in late 1975, everyone was still using belts. The only reason Lamborghini ever used chains was because they had a surplus of V12-sized chains from their tractor production, and tractors needed more durable and stronger chains for high torque loads. Timing belts are easier to replace, smoother, facilitate higher/quicker revving engines better and are less likely to cause terminal engine damage should they snap. Timing chains act like grenades if they break and require an oil bath, but are ultimately far less likely to break and are more durable. I’m surprised Matt doesn’t know this... he’s a huge car guy. TBH, he sounds a tad bias.
@NiveusLuxLucis3 жыл бұрын
Maintenance is really not much different between belt and chain as chains need maintenance too. The tensioner /guides wear out and chains do stretch. Parts for chain maintenance are more expensive than belt but upside is that they will not snap.
@michaelmeece3 жыл бұрын
Timing belts wear out, sure. But, they don’t stretch. Chain links wear the bore, effectively stretching the chain, slowly throwing off the cam timing. Belts don’t do that.

The reasson for the belt is they are silent , take less power and are easyer to change compared to a timing chain . On a car like a Ferrari or Lambo , the noise is not an issue ,the power loss is really not an issue and the easy replacement is negated by the fact that the engine is in the back so you have to take it out anyways .so there is really no reasson for a timing belt on a supercar , other than the fact that old man Ferrari was as stated , an ego maniac who hated that people can buy his cars

Gears are the original timing mechanism. They last forever but are noisy and limit position of the camshafts. Then chains are the next step. They allow camshafts to be farther away, are reliable and efficient, but expensive. Then for some reason companies started using belts. They are pretty much like chains except they are cheap, aren't as durable and quiet. Then after many people had their engines ruined by worn timing belts a lot of companies switched back to chains.

If I could afford it, I'd buy a Lambo instead. But every one has different tastes.

Ferrari is about appreciating the fine art of form meets function. You wouldn't add modifications to the Mona Lisa if you bought it would you? The value would drop through the floor....

David Lee sounds familiar...wasn't there a guy in England that took a 308 or 328, ripped out the engine, transmission and replaced it with 2 Tesla (Electric) engines? I saw his video on YT like 2 years ago and I can't find it.

Matt.....you should do your homework. That is an F40 engine in the Dino. Search for Jay Leno & David Lee's 1972 Dino Monza 3.6 Evo

You crazy?! This idiot doesn't know shit about cars! People didn't know how to use manual on a Ferrari?! You couldn't use it as your only car in the 70's, 80's and 90's because of the clutch?! The only reason was because they feast on fuel, it has absolutely nothing to do with clutch! Every car in Europe, pretty much up till today, have manual clutch and absolutely no problem in cities! I had a friend with a Ferrari and he would drive it all day, every day, never had a clutch problem as far as I know! He would only put the car on the side when he wanted to drive with his family, either from that, the only real problem was fuel consumption but anyone who can afford a Ferrari and decides to do so, it's aware of it's drinking problem and is well prepared to pay for it! What a moron!

@Roger Dodger It wasn't easy to miss clutches unless you can't clutch at all. Lot's of preconceptions in your narrow point of view and data without any backup. A Ferrari was nothing but reliable, that's why there are still so many up to this day that are 100% original. Ferrari didn't immediately outsold auto over manual, only in your country. Car enthusiasts, any of them, prefer manual over auto, unless of course, they are American and don't know better. There's a reason why F1 races have real racing tracks and Indys go on oval. You'll never be the standard for race drivers or automobile history. That's just bullcrap excuses of lame drivers who don't know shit about cars, to say Ferrari where unreliable piles. The lengths you go, seriously.

Kyemin. The point is that a lot of the wealthy folks who buy them aren’t great drivers. Couple that with service delays and the engine out services that were a staple and you end up with the reputation for unreliability. The other part is that Ferrari’s need to be driven or things go wrong. Far too many folks just don’t drive them enough which creates problems down the road for the 2nd or 3rd owner.
