I always ignore the 5 star reviews , and read the details of the 1-3 star reviews and check the 0-1s for any recurring complaint

I like the Honesty-companies push the products through you tube channels (they are trying to make money), because someone likes something doesn't mean somebody else will.

Appreciate it. I don’t fault companies for trying. At least we got options maybe…..too many options🤔

Spey pages is what I started using for information. It has opened up more questions than answers. But I got better on what to ask about a spey rod.

Forums are tough. The secret to them is to read the first three posts of a thread and move on. After that, a topic can turn from intruders to how large your tomatoes are during heat wave. That being said, Spey pages has some seriously legit members I regard as top notch advisers to the sport. Thank you for watching!

I build my own rods. A lot of what most people prefer can be controlled through the selection of components. It’s not cheap but less than comparable high end rods

Another solid video 🤘🏻 I'm currently looking for a rod and the right line for me. Burning through hundred dollar lines to find the one that works for me is rough.

Damn…..been there😆 Fly lines are more fun than rods though!

@greenhornflyhorn very true. I learn a ton from your videos brother. I'm only at it for a little over a year but I've been fishing since I'm a toddler with spin gear. I'm currently 49 , and fly fishing is an absolute obsession at this point. Thanks again.

Really enjoyed this video, just subbed too, I wish i’d seen this 2 years ago when I got my first spinning rod. Didn’t make the same mistake for my fly rods though.

Good stuff. This is where I appreciate fly shops but have a hard time spending retail on a rod. I’ve saved a ton of money buying two rods online that I ended up not liking because they don’t work with my casting style. That’s a huge part too. It might be a great rod but not a great rod for you with your casting style. If you can cast a rod before buying do it

Very, very good point! One I completely failed to mention. Thank you for commenting

Often you buy a rod and in the beginning you don’t like it…I say give it a few more outings…so many times this has happened to me and my best rods are the ones I didn’t like initially

Ya know, that’s a great point. Also, a bad rod can an amazing rod with the right line. The example i gave, there was just no way that grip would be comfortable. Thank you for the comment 🤘

Why don't you build your own rod. It is really very easy to do. You do not need any extra hardware except resin. You can customize every component according to your needs, and it costs fifth of anything decent out there. Just use respirator and gloves when applying the resin finish. And, building one takes less time than reading the reviews of a commercial rod. You can order very cheap blanks and components for your first one. After the second or the third one you will become practically "expert" in building rods. Then, you will laugh even harder seeing how people pay so much attention to trivial stuff in the commercial rods like wrap or seat color etc. They require no effort.

Absolutely true! Since I built my first cheap rod, I haven’t bought one. I have just built a series of rods with some high end stuff like birch tree grips, agate guides, cts blanks and so on. 4 rods of this level would be like 4000€ (even more if I would buy customised rods from a professional rodbuilder. I paid 1200€ total for all 4 though. And a selfbuilt rod gives the same beautiful feel that you get when catching fish on self tyed flies. Maybe even better 😊

Yes, but…the availability of really good quality guides for fly rods is getting difficult. I can’t even get tip tops that are high quality, the couple companies that make them in the US are constantly out of stock, the commercial rod builders put in orders for hundreds and thousands of guides, and that leaves the home rod builder waiting for availability.

Certainly has crossed my mind. Been eyeing up Blue Halo blanks for awhile. Any brands would be greatly appreciated!

You can get CTS blanks, they are from NZ and I personally love them. but that brings us back to the topic of the video. You have to option to design your own taper from them though and they have a beautiful Color range. Something like 40 different colors or so. For guides I personally use REC Guides, which are a little more expensive, but still ok and they are exceptionally durable. Idk if they are easy to get outside of Europe.
