I've never understood the mentality that game publishers/developer's have with firing a load of your staff that worked on the first game for example and then bringing in new ones for the sequels, well I know the real reason why ... money but, Having an unstoppable team of workers that work around each other is where passion thrives in my opinion and in turn create great sequels and goals.

The funny thing is that from a technical standpoint keeping the original devs is potentially many times more profitable, but because it requires a bit more down payment, (as in they pay in the short term a bit more) they stupidly shoot themselves in the foot and go under, its a bit ironic when we know as well that one or two failed games isn't gonna tank those studios, its interesting that the smaller and less successful studios are more likely to keep old blood. Also part of the point of AAA publishers was suppose to be to compensate for flops without guaranteeing the company went under.

"Change is hard to sell" Resident evil 3 remake as of recent comes to mind. It was not as well received as the second game because they straight up removed some portions of the game in order to speed up development whereas the second game had more time to be fully cooked. WoW's cataclysm expansion was not well received by majority of the player base because it took away some portion of its identity away from the players. What was a game that you grew up playing for a few years is no more and instead you have something else in place. Runescape going into evolution of combat had the same reaction from the players as well. Half the player base had quit basically over night. Look at how well iphones sell every year. It's more proof that people want the same old item with as small change here and there. The overall product has to remind them of the one they are giving up for the new one. People, as a whole, do not like change in general. If something is completely different to the point where you no longer recognize it, it's a total turn off and the consumer is not going to be interested in learning the new product and buying it. This whole push for constant change in video games, is the result of reviewer critique. If a game is not changed all that much, the reviewers point it out and the developers take that feed back and try and reinvent the wheel in a formula that has already been proven to be favorable with the player base. But the players' voice is not what's heard here. It's their wallets, hence the vote with your wallet phrase. This also means that there is a divide between how professional critic people think about a product and it's actual consumer. Because the critic may not even devote all their time to learning the lore and game play of a game as generations go by and sequels are released and lore is added in. They sit down to play a game knowing virtually nothing about it. They're not a hard core fan. They just judge based on first impressions.

I think you could have talked more about story-driven franchises. A lot of these don't end, and they should, what's the point of a story if it never ends? That's a big problem with movies nowadays, most of the top-sellers are old stories that came back for no reason other than because the name sells. I hope video games never reach this point.

No joke, this video may have been about games but so much of what ActMan was saying also applied to the Disney sequels, specially when he talked about how how important it is to innovate without alienating your audience. Disney somehow failed spectacularly by refusing to innovate all the superficial aspects of the sequels (same setting, same story, same spaces ships, same character archetypes except worse) while at the same time taking fundemental Star Wars elements and altering them beyond recognition (Luke Skywalker, Force lore, Palpatine's death). They managed to capture the worst of both worlds and it ends up making the sequels only Star Wars in name. It has lasers, lightsabers, and spaceships but it doesn't feel like Star Wars, just a hollow shell. And that mades me so indescribably sad. :-(

Yeah, there’s a definite issue where companies just try to superficially copy other franchise’s successes. Like I’m a massive fan of Assassin’s Creed. Ubisoft is obviously tired of making AC games, they don’t wanna do it anymore. But AC makes a lot of money. So when they make their historical action RPGs, instead of making a good action RPG they try to do an action RPG with AC mechanics and premises and it ends up hurting the action RPG experience. Like the best thing to do is to divert the IP. Have your historical action RPGs and cut out all the AC fat, build up that IP and give those games their own identity. Then revisit the AC franchise on occasion and focus on what made AC, AC.

Agent 005 I’d argue that there has been both improvements and problems, 2 steps forward and one step back. In the long run sure they’re still managing to stride ahead of their wrongdoings, but only to some degree. They have an entire studio less of help, and they’re also having some other developers work on a different project entirely. They don’t have as much manpower on Destiny as fans and haters alike would wish to think. I personally enjoy Destiny 2, I still enjoy the experience no matter how “bad” it gets.

Yes, I actually liked Dragon Age 2 and after a couple playthroughs...it's actually my favorite, mainly because the Hawke and his companions have the best chemistry and their happy-go-lucky vibe from one adventure to the next was done very well. The thing is that 2 is split into three acts that all could've been their own game, Hawke getting their fortune, the Qunari's attempted takeover, and the beginning of the Mage Rebellion. But since they were all in one game they weren't really given room to breath as their arcs aside the Mage Rebellion since it was the main problem and theme throughout the game. Yes it sucks that they were lazy on the map designs and changed the Darkspawns' design, which was a horrible decision, but then they made the Qunari fucking awesome and made them better than just, "really tale humanoid." Too bad they changed their culture lore a bit though, and then copletely retconned it in Inquisition. I liked the picture Sten had painted of Qun, why they changed it so that it seems more like he misinterpreted parts of it was dumb. But yeah DA2 has a lot of pros to it, it's just a shame it has just as many cons.

My biggest issue with 4 was that the world just felt so lifeless that there wasn’t much point in exploring. Compare all the things you could do in San Andreas to 4 and you realize just how much was taken out. Bare bones customization for outfits, cars, property, houses, random encounters, etc. GTA V took more inspiration from SA which meant exploring the world was actually an adventure instead of a chore. It’s not that 4 didn’t have them, it’s that they were a pale comparison to SA and by extension 5.

There are franchises that I get fatigue even from someone mentioning them, like Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty -franchises. Then there are franchises that never tire me out no matter how much I play them, like The Legend of Zelda or Metroid -franchises for example. What is the biggest difference between them? The first group gets new releases annually and the devs are afraid of trying new stuff (nor they don't have time for it), while the second group only has 1-2 games per console generation and every game tries something new while sticking to its roots at the same time.

Big Boss no the story is bad. What’s the point of making a sequel to a game with a completed story arch? The revenge story arch itself shouldn’t have been stretched to an entire game’s length and Ellie doesn’t even kill Abby in the end. There’s no reason she should spare her as she has just trekked months, wasting supplies, losing friends, getting serious injuries, etc just to find one person. 1 memory flashback is probably not enough to have an entire character change happen in a minute and convince themselves that letting someone you’ve wasted tons of supplies on is worth it. It’s even worse that Abby doesn’t just kill Ellie afterward since there’s no reason for her to let someone she know nows is following her to live and on one is going to notice if she does. It’s a post apocalyptic world and no one in their right mind is going to be civilized
