As a mechanic, loot boxes are an inherently good idea. Rewarding the player with random shit for the game; that doesn't impact gameplay or force them to cough up more money. It's also sad that there are people who defend this greed and arrogance with everything they have. I like lootboxes when theyre not intrusive and for a game where items matter. Like, CS:GO or Rocket League (until they removed them, of course) It's always fun and nice to drop 10 bucks on a game every now and then, and open a few crates and hopefully get something good. If you don't, it's still fun. If you do, it's ecstatic. The whole "LOOTBOX BAD" thing is not exactly true in essence, it's just that companies got a little too comfortable by pushing them. Lootboxes are also a fantastic way to increase the lifespan or individual player longevity. Whilst I personally like goals that aren't RNG, it's also a bit fun to spice things up and have your goal be in an RNG system, but in this instance, it cannot be paid, or at least optional. Say, for example, Mass Effect 3. In Mass Effect 3, the lootboxes weren't cosmetic, yet they weren't entirely intrusive. They added a way to have endless progression for free, or for a monetary price, but it didn't matter really. It was fun and it extended the amount of time poured into said game. Without this fantastic system, the game would've been more boring, because there would be no grind. On the topic of grinding, it also, in essence, not bad. It sets a goal for the player to follow, which leads to more motivation to play said game. Wanting that armor set, weapon, or skin, is another reason to keep playing. Without the grind, a lot of games would not have player bases.

People always use the “SAME PRICE DESPITE INFLATION” excuse forgetting distribution getting infinitely cheaper and how the overall audience grew EXPONENTIALLY. Not only did they cut a major part of the costs, they also are getting far, FAR greater returns for their investments
@marianopena78723 жыл бұрын
Yup, exactly. A couple of points I'll add. 1) 2K has started raising their prices for next-gen games by $10, yet still treat them like casino simulators. 2) 2K, EA, Activison, and Ubisoft all come to mind when I think of games having 37 different editions. These range from $60 - $200, and how often are these "special editions" just a couple of ingame cosmetics, team packs or ingame currency? Things that are bare minimum but people will shell out an extra $20 for these editions. The biggest one though is obviously the cost of distribution being significantly lowered. We're quickly moving into a digital download world and even have two nextgen consoles that are digital only. These companies aren't doing it out of need but greed. They'll gloat about making $1 billion in MTX, then lay off 1500 employees. Greedy, soulless cunt fucks.

@roseforeuropa3 жыл бұрын
You have a very valid point, the natural deflation that comes with gains in efficiency, to offset natural inflation (roughly 3% per year). Hence, when you look at video games costing $40 back in 1977, it would be worth about $140 today in real terms. To further expand on your point, you could also see that not just distribution, but the cost of the physical hardware (cartridge), was SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive. Costs were cut dramatically in the mid to late 90s when the industry switched to CDs, which costs mere pennies, yet the $50 retail pricing was maintained. They used gambling mechanics and I do agree with this video and others who say this is basically anti-competitive business practice.

Wanna talk pay to play? Final Fantasy on mobile. I had people in my guild (KOTK) that spent upwards of $5000+ ON A PHONE GAME. There were even players that admittedly spent upwards of $20,000. I was unfortunate enough to get sucked into it and spent about $800 to get to tier 4 and it was effective for about a month before T5 dropped, then things got dicey. Then they dropped T6 and if you weren't a healthy T5, you had to hide under bubble shields every night or hide your kingdom really well. That's when I gave up. I disbanded all of my armies and let the realm "owners" wreck me. Uninstalled the game about 2 years ago and haven't looked back. The worst part? I never spent time playing final fantasy ever in my life. It was me somehow getting involved enough to join a guild and meeting other people that made me get sucked in. I couldn't stop checking my phone at least once an hour even if I knew the realm was calm at the time. Forget about it when an RVR even was happening. I basically had my phone on standby constantly for 12 hours and would literally set alarms throughout the night to make sure my kingdom was okay on the nights I didn't have shields. It's crazy how these games can suck you in. Even when you had no affiliation with that franchise to begin with. These mobile games need to be put under the scope even more because now we're talking about games you carry with you everywhere and check like Facebook. Like I said, first hand experience with how quickly you can get sucked in even if you never took part in that franchise before. I never played final fantasy before that.

Not only do people's (or parents) wallet's suffer, the game suffers. I just think of all the recent failed games that probably would have been better if the development time was focused more on finishing the game rather than on the 'surprise mechanics'. It's also kinda sad to see new promising games like Genshin Impact suffer because of this also, I'm sure the game would be even more fun without having to grind if you don't wanna be part of the manipulative monetization. I was kinda looking forward to playing it before I knew about that stuff, then I noped out. And I don't care if you can beat the game without paying a penny, the fact that the game balance directly ties to whether of not you pay money is what I have an issue with it. Hopefully like lootboxes this kinda monetization will also crash and burn. Class vid Act Man, you're quickly making your way to be one of my favourite KZbinrs, ya sneaky sniper jackal you

Genshin won't ever suffer. China side of the game industry will never suffer what the outside game industry suffers.. Cuz China has its own laws, and other countries doesn't have the authority to question other countries authorities. Why would I say so? Take copyright for example. Many China games were basically clones or reskin version of already made games, the blatant copy is so obvious. Yet the OG concept game cannot do anything against them legally. Cuz China doesn't have the copyright laws that forbids blatant plagiarism. So too will be gacha/lootbox/gambling system. Yes there are certain laws with gambling in games in China, such as stating the actual rates of drop probability. But there are no laws stopping them from continuing this system. Genshin as you said, a guy basically tested a billion time simulation Your chance of a 5* character lies only on 1-20 76-90 90th is the "hard pity" But 76 is the real soft pity(20%) where most ppl would start having onwards till 84. 21-75 is just fodder for you to waste money if you potentially spend, it's slight marginally lower than its specified 0.6% chance(which is illegal BTW) Fortunately, the game current content are still clear-able with free Story character, some char you do gacha out, if used right, even 4* can be way better asset to your team comp than a 5*. Plus resisting the temptation to roll to wait for a rate up banner to improve your said comp. TL:DR China doesn't have as much restriction to game gambling concurrently as compared to countries outside of China, hence any China origin games won't suffer.
@up75003 жыл бұрын
@@Vonmoonlight True, but if stricter laws are introduced with microtransactions as is being talked about in the UK, then that will effect the game's availability over here in Europe. I guess my big issue is that the game is being marketed as a open world BOTW style game in the west, when it's clearly not at it's core. You see posts all the time how people where surprised when they discovered after a while it was a gacha game (as it's still not well known in the western mainstream, and the marketing was clearly going for a mainstream audience) This is clearly a dangerous precedent and is going to pave the way for more people being exploited and ripped off by this addictive system.

Yeh, as a mobile gamer i can attest to this: Almost every game has a payed loot box mechanic. You might say it's more justified for a free 2 play game so they have some type of income, but its still "legal gambling". For a f2p game, i think the best monetization is to just sell specific item packs that show you exactly what you are getting at different price ranges. Wanna try the game for a week or two, maybe buy the 3$ pack. Wanna support the devs cuz u like the game? Buy the 5 or 10$ pack. Either way, you at least know exactly what the pack contains. This is why season passes are a better monetization system: you can clearly see all the rewards you will get in the entire season. That way, if you don;t care about the rewards in one season, just don't buy it. Problem solved. Loot boxes were so insidious because they created virtual slot machines of unknown variable for children to get addicted to. And most of the times you would get shit. Imagine being a kid and not understanding the value of money and just stealing your parent's credit card so you can play virtual slot machine in a video game... Oh boy, the moral boundaries these evil corporations crossed are mind boggling...

@@hellodumplings8564 For sports games, it’s literally only one mode and they’re no where else, for mobile/ free to play games, it’s there only option for making any money (except mobile games usually play ads to get money, not the case for free-to-play games tho). Micro transactions aren’t automatically loot boxes, in most cases I’ve seen where a micro transaction is a loot box, it’s because you’re literally buying a loot box(es), which technically means the micro transactions isn’t a loot box because it tells you exactly what you’re spending money on, loot box(es). They’re usually pretty blunt and factual, like $4.99 for a specific product, and when you giving it the money, it gives you the thing you paid for, it not like there’s a 50% the product you paid for isn’t giving to you. Battlepasses are literally subscriptions that tell you almost everything you can gain as long as you finish it, so they had essentially took loot boxes place but you actually know what you’re getting most of the time with sprinkled in with random chance for things you weren’t guaranteed. Loot boxes are a pretty dead trend, they’re mostly contained in small areas of the industry (like sport and mobile games) and I can’t remember a popular game released this year that had loot boxes, and if they’re are, it’s clearly not as popular or common as they were in like 2016, they declined in use. (Most instances of loot boxes currently in the industry come from games that were made around that time, stuff like Overwatch and R6S come to mind) Edit: You act like they’re everywhere today but I can’t seem to recall any this year, I can only think of examples that happened years ago, they’re not “in almost every game”, they’re clearly less prominent as they used to be, meaning they *fell* from popularity and usage. It like saying almost every website on the internet is furry porn, no, just like loot boxes, it very contained and only found in select areas, you’re over exaggerating it’s prominence so you don’t sound like you’re stuck in the past.
