I'm 3 years late, but lets touch on some facts, which you have not touched upon in this video. 1. Aatma Nirbhar Bharat scheme was a very large stimulus package, that catered to the people in poverty. Also, if Indian agriculture/primary sector was the one sector that saved Indian economy from falling into recession, since the migrant workers started to return to agricultural activities. 2. India has large inequalities, there is no doubt about that, but inequality removal in a country like India is not an easy process, which can be done in 5-10 years, this process requires more than 4 decades, which is very liberal considering the 1.4 billion population in India. There have been many employment schemes, along with skill India initiative that are in effect since 2015-16. Also, if you look at the Gini coefficient, India has lower inequality if compared to countries like China, Israel. 3. As you have rightly mentioned, GDP is not the perfect measure for economic development, however, without growth, it is not possible to implement the welfare schemes for poverty reduction. Poverty reduction and welfare is a very long process, which takes time. China was a poorer country before their modernization, but after they started to grow at 10 percent owing to the large manufacturing-based drive, they lifted well over 500 million people out of poverty. In a nutshell, GDP growth is an important measure, and although the inequality is a big concern, schemes like make in India and Startup India are ought to increase the employment and reduction in poverty, since MSME sector will be the key proponent of India's poverty removal. 3 years later, India is a very stable economy, with a growth rate of well over 6 percent during the times of fears of global recession, and this means that poverty alleviation and welfare schemes can now be taken up. This growth can also act as a base for increasing the industrialization drive in the country. An important distinction here is that without any growth, there is no chance to reduce inequalities, so this is the reason why GDP growth is a very important measure currently, and later the measures like Inequality index, hunger index become of greater importance.
