I don’t think proper intuitive eating excludes restriction. At the core, I think intuitive eating just means getting in touch with your body and it’s cues as well as how different foods make you feel, and then eating accordingly. So restricting certain foods comes naturally just by listening to our bodies and realizing: “this is not what I want/need right now” or “this doesn’t make me feel good” etc.

Yeah I agree, there’s a difference between restricting and intuitive eating, when you’re restricting it’s basically saying I can’t ever eat this, and with intuitive eating it’s (like as she said about waking up and watching tv) listening to when your body is craving something and letting yourself eat that without binging and eating a ton of it

Intuitive eating doesn't mean eating all day every day. Your restrictions are pretty much feeling full and satisfied. Intuitive eating is about listening to these cues and acknowledging them. I don't restrict sleep, I make sure I sleep as much as my body needs (I'm incredibly fortunate to be able to do that!) And that's exactly how I handle both TV and food. Restrictions are only gonna make you obsess over it and binge it.

Sleeping, a necessity, should be intuitive. Eating, a necessity, should also be intuitive. The natural “restriction” of eating, is your fullness and hunger cues. A principle of intuitive eating is “gentle nutrition”, thus the structure of intuitive eating is science + intuition.

Thank you!!! Also, sleeping should be done intuitively too, just like all physical necessities - which means going to bed when you do get sleepy and waking up refreshed. If you restrict your sleep pattern because you ignored being tired, you‘ll have to force yourself out of bed in the morning instead of waking up naturally at sunrise without an alarm - and you‘ll think all day about a nap or how you wish you could just sleep all day long. It’s the exact same bad outcome as in food restriction. I suppose that‘s what she does to sleep, eating etc., so she doesn’t know what living intuitively really feels like. Yes, you can sleep and eat as much as you want! You just won’t want it anymore outside what feels good to your body.

Intuitive eating isn't only about hunger and cravings. It's also about physical well being. Once you've lived without restriction you start noticing patterns. Those patterns do work kinda like restriction. You can deviate, but you stick to these things because they feel best and you wouldn't discover them without allowing yourself to eat whatever, whenever - I feel bad if I skip protein at meals - Grazing makes me unproductive and unsatisfied - I don't feel satisfied with too many vegetables. I need something dense to satisfy my mental hunger Just like you do with TV. You have those limits because you've allowed yourself to watch TV a lot - Watching 3 seasons of this new show in the middle of the night messes with my sleep - I enjoy movies more with family around - I need a routine to avoid getting into "the bad trance" In my mind, as someone who has recovered from food obsession using intuitive eating (restricted like crazy in the past), the initial "no restrictions" rule gave me an opportunity to experiment and figure out exactly what I love and dont love. I would never have known it if I hadn't gone through that

Exactly, I like to say I swapped rigid food rules for understanding my body. That doesn't mean that I do absolutely everything all the time it means that I can consider how certain things will make me feel physically and mentally. I love brownies and having them is good for my mental health but if I have them quickly it gives me an upset stomach and I can't even enjoy them. Intuitive eating and telling myself to have another Brownie in an hour if I want another one but eat this one nice and slowly has helped me enjoy the experience significantly more so now I feel better mentally and physically

There is such a difference between structure and deprivation. I know I need to eat a few times a day. I know if I don't do certain things at certain times of the day I am not only mire anxious, but hungrier because I forget to eat healthy snacks. All EXTREME RESTRICTION is bad. Completely eliminating things from your diet, save for medical reasons, is not good for your brain.

Intuitive eating is about listening to your body’s hunger and fullness cues and not putting too much emotional value on food. We don’t sleep all day because we give our bodies enough sleep at night and don’t stress about it. If you stress about not getting enough sleep, you probably won’t fall asleep. In the same way, if you’re so stressed about food, you will find it difficult to meet your body’s physical needs because you will be so focused on trying to control your body. We don’t watch too much television because our bodies and minds don’t need that all the time. All that takes is awareness and mindfulness of your true needs. The same goes for intuitive and mindful eating, it’s about awareness of your physical and emotional needs whilst not idolising food, or treating it like it’s God. All of the analogies you listed are an example of listening to your body through mindful awareness. That’s the goal of intuitive eating. It takes work, but it’s a lot healthier than fearing food - or trying to obsessively control your anxiety with food.

Intuitive eating doesn't say ALL restriction is bad and it's not the absence of any structure. It is based on 10 other principles that also include gentle nutrition as well as movement. I think you are confusing making peace with food and honouring your hunger with NO restriction. I eat intuitively myself. I have a seafood allergy, obviously I am not going to eat seafood. Eating intuitively is based on listening to your body and honouring yourself and that will include some degree of restriction. But these restrictions do not come from diet culture, it comes from listening to what your body needs. I've been eating intuitively for over 11 months and it's absolutely NOT a lack of structure at all. Am creating a series of videos on intuitive eating and I have a bunch of what I eat in a day videos as well. If anyone is interested in learning more, check that out.

Of course we need to have structure in our life. Intuitive eating is not about having no structure and much less about eating everything you want. It's not about eating sweets every day multiple times a day. It's about respecting your body, eating until you feel good, listening to your body and eating what you need. And yes, it's about eating a brownie when you're craving a brownie, without feeling guilty afterwards, because candy isn't the bad witch in the story. They are a food like any other, with a different composition like all the others. And because of that composition, when you listen to your body it's clear that you won't want to eat them every day, because your body doesn't need (quite the contrary) to eat sweets every day. And obviously when you listen to your body you will eat a little of everything in the right amount for your body, because your body needs vegetables, protein, and carbohydrates, obviously. Intuitive eating is about not being obsessed with "the body" and having the freedom to have a sweet treat every now and then without feeling guilty. It's about exercising not because we have anxiety and fear of having a certain body, or because we have to follow the plan anyway EVERY DAY, to get those abs, or not to gain an extra gram, but because our body needs it too. that, and to feel good and have fun. It's about feeling completely fine if we didn't exercise today because we REALLY didn't want to, and we were really tired. Intuitive eating is about breaking all anxiety about food, exercise and your body, and it's about learning to listen to your body and do what it needs. But intuitive eating isn't about being 300 pounds, nor is it about doing nothing about it. If you weigh around that, you are enough as you are and there is NOTHING wrong with you, but you are entitled to change if you want to. And when I say change, I mean change your lifestyle if it's not healthy, I don't mean change your body. Intuitive eating is about many things, but it's certainly not about not having structure or eating whatever you feel like. Read a book.

Bro the thing she said about tv and sleep is literally just intuitively watching tv, and intuitively sleeping, it’s no different then foods. When someone says “restrictive eating” they mean completely cutting out certain foods, you should be allowed to eat whatever you what but just INTUITIVELY, meaning you don’t have to over indulge or binge on something, just listening to your body

It doesn't mean restrictions in the way you think it does. It refers to diet restrictions where you'd only allow yourself half a meal because you don't have enough calories left and go to bed hungry or you only allow yourself dessert if you've been on a run to burn off the dessert's calories, you won't allow yourself to enjoy your birthday because you're stressing about wanting to eat cake but won't allow yourself to because it's too high in calories. It's any restriction that leads to an unhealthy relationship with food and then ends up making you for example ill with stress or just binge eating more than you would've if you'd just let yourself have the food, then feeling bad about the binge and restricting yourself to make up for it the next day. Intuitive eating refers to eating when hungry and finishing when full, that's a "restriction" right there - but it's a positive "restriction", recognising when you need to eat and when you don't need to, instead of depriving yourself when you're hungry and not stopping eating when you're not hungry.

This isn't true. Intuitive eating emphasizes the need for balance and giving our body both what we want and what we NEED. Gentle nutrition is one of its principles, meaning our body does need certain foods/forms of fuel that are beneficial to basic functioning. It's not "Eat whatever you want, in whatever quantities you want, whenever you want." It's talking about incorporating both pleasure and nutritional necessity to find more balance and make peace with food. You're highly educated and experienced in your field, I'm surprised you don't know this.

Yes the restrictions come when your body says “that’s enough” that’s the whole point of intuitive eating and that’s the structure and a human knows how to make the decisions of what is considered healthy and beneficial to u and ur health and what makes u feel good and what may not be beneficial or downy make u feel good so it’s about healthy restriction and not restricting so much so that it’s not really humanly possible to meet those restrictions so like I’ve seen in other comments intuitive eating helps u get in touch with ur inner body so what does is really need and this method may work better for some more than others and for others regular dieting may work better but whatever it is it’s about having a healthy relationship with food and what makes ur body feel best ☺️

Intuitive eating is finding a healthy structure with food that feels good to your body by working with your hunger and fullness cues, Getting your nutrients needs without excluding fun products by giving yourself permission to have those "bad foods" when you crave them , and maybe adding some fats, fiber, protein to it for satisfaction..and fun fact, you actually start craving the other"healthy" foods as well and you have less cravings for the "bad " foods unintentionally cuz you no longer afraid of them, knowing that everyday is different and the portions kinda differentiate from someone to another.. So, if I'm craving a cookie for example , it's after an actual meal or if I'm not that hungry I'll have it with some nuts, cream or yogurt and some fruits or with some carrots and hummus.. instead of obsessively thinking about it the whole time and scheduling a binge for them and repeating the cycle and feeling like I'm in a conflict with food when instead it's fuel for my body... Just by being honest with yourself and giving your self permission it gets you out of fight or flight and you start seeing what's your preferences are and at the end of the day you're a mature person not a pig, if you're body is off balance it's your responsibility to take care of it
@elizrebezilmadommdo1662

Isn't the point of intuitive eating that you listen to what your body actually needs and watch for your body's response to the things you're eating? It's not like you're infinitely hungry. If you're only eating when you need food/feel hungry and eating the food that makes you feel energized and satisfied, then you're obviously not going to eat "24/7", because you wouldn't need to. I think you're getting "intuitive eating" mixed up with binge eating or pigging out on anything that looks good to you without actually listening to what your body needs. As for the watching TV comparison, the same could apply. If you're watching too much and you lose your sleep over it, your eyes are getting red, you feel like you're missing out, you're isolated from your friends and family, you get cranky, or feel like a slob, you watch less. If people paid more attention to how they felt after having so much screen time and took it more seriously, people would naturally want to watch TV less, since watching too much TV is bad for you. Personally, even if I had the time, I'm not the kind of person who will watch an entire season of a show, because I feel like I've had enough TV watching time after like 2 episodes.

Arguments about how to interpret intuitive eating aside, I think it is true that some people need structure and restriction to keep them on the right path, but I think some people who have played mind games with themselves their whole lives are better off for not counting calories or trying to restrict what they eat and just eating what makes them feel nourished. Still, I don’t think this is the correct interpretation of intuitive eating. Like everyone is saying, it involves restricting not by calories but what does and does not make you feel good. The way I was raised led me to naturally take on an intuitive approach to eating. A great example of how that includes restriction happened today. My mom gave me some candy for Easter when I saw her first thing in the morning before we have eaten breakfast. I eat a piece of candy basically in the spirit of things. I was quickly reminded why I don’t eat sweets on an empty stomach. I love love love sweets, but if there’s cookies or donuts in the break room at work I never take any, which surprises my coworkers. It’s not because I don’t want to eat one. It’s because I haven’t eaten recently and I will feel miserable if I eat sweets on an empty stomach. I’ll allow myself the occasional cookie or ice cream at the end of the day.

See in these you tube videos is they talk about eating until you are "full". You should eat until 80% satisfied. Full for many is over eating. Stick to 3 meals sip a drink between bites to slow down eating to help you identify satisfaction. Only eat a snack when physically hungry. You will be surprised how you don't need to eat 6 times a day as many diets have us brainwashed to believe. Choose foods you love and enjoy. Eventually so called trigger foods will lose their appeal. Eat small bites of each food only eating the best morsels. Leave a bite of each food This helps to be able to leave food on your plate when 80% satisfied. You can always wrap up leftovers for another meal When people say they gain weight when eating mindfully. There could many factors such as water weight shift after coming off a diet or overeating until full rather 80% satisfied, snacking when not hungry. Success is when you lose the weight and lose the desire to overeat. .

So I guess you don’t understand that diet culture has moved many of us away from hearing what our bodies are actually telling us they need. If I had never started comparing my body and thinking it was less than all the way back in 5th grade, if I had not started using food back in 9th grade to stuff down my feelings, if I’d not heard my mom complain about her own body and constantly dieting, and if I had not started dieting in my late 20s, I’d never have to LEARN to listen intuitively. I’d have accepted that our weight goes up & down to some degree, naturally, and that if it gets really out of whack, it’s because of stress or hormones. I’d never have broken the trust between my body & my mind, and I’d be at my real weight set point, as would millions of people. Leave intuitive eating alone.

I agree with you. Intuitive eating is a new spin on mindful eating. It just gives people a license to overeat. Sure you can stop when you are full. However, you realize that you just ate a 2,000 calorie nutrient deficient meal. Then you are hungry an hour later because your hunger cues are messed up. And yes there are good and bad foods. If you eat a 2000 calorie meal that doesn't give you any nutrients and then are hungry an hour later, you're going to notice that if you're practicing intuitive eating, and you're going to realize that whatever you ate was not filling and did not make you feel good. Then you can shift your eating patterns towards things that do make you feel good. If you're eating cake for every meal then you're going to feel shitty no matter how good it tastes. But that doesn't mean you can't have a slice of cake after dinner - that's what no restrictions means.
