Wireless charging is less efficient then wired charging. So a power pack would result is lost energy that could be used. There is no better, more reliable method of electrical connection then a physical one. Wireless charging consumes 47% more power then a wire, not to mention the cost. Wireless charging has one big flaw. It shows piss poor charging efficiency compared to a cable charger. Why? Because elctrical current needs to be converted into a magnetic (changing) field in the charger and back into current in the phone. During that conversion, energy is lost - twice. In a cable charger, none of that happens. The current just flows. And this problem is not fixable as it is determined by physics.

Even if the latter is still a bit cryptic, it shows the type of research you do and gives your videos more credibility imho.

Yep, shear force and magnets is a big deal. Had to deal with this on my last 11 Pro Max since the new phone was too heavy for the magnetic mount I had been using and kept falling off my dashboard. Solution: bigger thicker magnets and a bit more grippy case. Also I use my lightning port ALL the time so taking it away would be bad news for me. USB audio interfaces for music production, USB connection for multicamera in OBS, testing AR filters in Snapchat Lens Studio and Instagram Spark AR. Probably 90%+ of people only use it for charging but for the hard core creatives that really use the devices to their full potential there better be some serious innovation to make wireless tech work with no latency. Especially for audio production.

Would they have to offer a portless iPhone though? Say they ship the iPhone with a Qi charger, OR with no charging cable - they can surely keep the lightning port as an “extra bonus”, and an alternate way of charging. Just like how the Mac Mini and iMac have up to date USB C ports, but still throw in a sprinkling of USB A ports.

EU: you can't keep using lightning Apple: Magsafe? :D
@levygaming31334 жыл бұрын
Can we just talk about how monumentally dumb the EU forcing all companies to use the same charger is? I mean first of all, there are bound to be countless Apple users who do have lightning cables but don’t have usb c cables, and would need to buy new cords in this legislation aimed at preventing people from having to buy new cords. Oh the irony. Second, imagine if the EU had decided to enact this legislation ~5 years ago. We’d be stuck with micro-usb phones. Who’s to say that in 5-10 years when the next usb does to usb-c what usb-c did to micro-usb that the EU will accept/recognize any potential improvements and let it happen. I have no trust in politicians being able to understand and act on engineering decisions. Not for nothing either because in Australia you can’t change your rims on your car because of some backwards legislation written no doubt by some politician that had zero understanding of why such a law is ridicules.

Non-iPhone user here, so maybe some stupid questions, but... Does the constant sliding of the charging dock across the back of the phone scratch the phone? Does the constant tugging on the cord to remove the dock make the cord break fast? What happens if you get the charging dock magnet next to your credit cards... does it de-magnetize them and does it stick to everything that metal? Also, I use my charging port on my Android to connect to the computer all the time for file transfers. Its the most reliable method.
How safe is magsafe though. None of the reviewers cover it, only drop tests on the iPhone. But what happens if someone trips over the cord.... does it work as well as it does on older Mac Books. Snazzy Labs is the only one that has touched on this so far. Well done!! I don't think a lot of people understand what magsafe is and how its supposed to work, or rather why its called mag"SAFE". Apple shouldnt call it magsafe but magcharger or something similar.

The popularity of wireless charging is a disaster. It is inherently less efficient, both in terms of material costs as well as simple energy. Apple and others pushing for it to be become the society-wide norm is environmentally irresponsible in the extreme.

Local manufacture has advantages that are also ignored by lots of industries, but even then, the raw material tonnage still has to he transported from somewhere. @odiltm2594 жыл бұрын
@@MentalEdge the point of the wireless charging is convenience. If it becomes inconvenient for people to pay their electric bill they will go back to using normal methods. It’s also an infant technique right now and as such doesn’t have the optimization that standard port charging has. But given time it will develop and become more efficient.
@MentalEdge4 жыл бұрын
@@odiltm259 No. It wont. This is physics. Not the "maturity or infancy of the tech". Power is power. Every time you transform it, you lose some of it. There is no such thing as 100% efficient. Any cable, even, loses some of the power it carries to heat, due to resistance. A port is just a way to make an electrical connection. There is no superfluous transformation there. No tech, that can be less or more optimized. Wireless charging works exactly the same way normal charging does. Except the power gets transformed two more times on the way. Once, to magnetic energy, then again, back to electric energy. All wireless does is bridge a gap in space. The actual form of power at both ends is still just electricity, the power just goes magnetic in-between. That will ALWAYS net a lower efficiency compared to just using the electrical power thru directly, without transformation. There is nothing to "optimize" here. It's physics. It's how the universe and energy works. One is better than the other. Period.

Great video. I'm not convinced of a portless iPhone, in the same way I wasn't convinced that removing the headphone jack was a good idea. Two important uses (besides charging) for the Lightning connection are Apple Car Play (This only works via a wired USB-C to lightning connection in my brand new VW T6.1 for instance and will not work over bluetooth) and data connections that take audio or video over USB (eg I use a USB to Optical Out S/PDIF via the lightning to USB camera adapter with my iPhone). Bluetooth and wireless charging are not the solution to every wired 'problem'.

My worry with the Magsafe charger for iPhone is how long will the cable joint last? We've ALL had multiple lightning cables (and 30 pin before that) that have split and frayed at the connector end, usually just behind the flex sheath. So if the Magsafe charger is hard to remove from the phone by pulling it off at a right angle, how are you most likely to do it? By sliding it off. and how are we most likely to do that? By tugging at the cable - just as we see at 10:50 in the video. So it's all well and good that Apple's 15w charging is only just behind the Lightning charger, but if the cable breaks as often as Lightning cables do, even genuine Apple ones, then thats going to be a very expensive accessory to continue buying. And if you add rubber to all the accessories to increase sheer force, you'll only see the cables on the chargers break more often.

They didn't advertise this and never made a magnetic dock but some developers found them and i think it was a kickstarter but a 3rd parry car holder with a combo of aligning magnets and micro suction silicone held the phone on the dock. The silicone kept it from sliding and the magnets aligned it and helped prevent the adhesion from creeping away.
