If Alexa became a political streamer, I'd be super on board for that. I love his takes and the only real political commentary we have in Australia is through mainstream media (or our beloved FriendlyJordies ofc). We need more Aussies talking about world and domestic issues who aren't being paid by Murdoch media ☠

"Some Chinese official drew on a map in 1948". Well no it was first drawn in 1946, and it was the ROC regime (now Taiwan) that drew the thing. The communists just repeated the same maritime border claim that the nationalists claimed (well, almost the same, they actually removed 2 dashes as a goodwill gesture to North Vietnam in 1952, bringing it from 11 to 9). Taiwan still claims the line, and cooperates with Beijing on the issue.

Yeah and the island China are creating with military bases on them is to expand there territorial waters to be able to collect taxes on shipping lanes. Hasan acting like there would be no tension if the US was uninvolved in the region is just silly, just that there would be no counter power to China. Hasan foriegn policy views are so basic. Like with Ukraine Russian war. He said US to prevent loss of life should dictate peace between Russian and Ukraine which would be an imperialist act by the US, while trying to claim to be anti imperialist.

The British had an iron grip on Hong Kong, brutally crushing dissent for over a century. Literally the LAST governor established democratic-seeming institutions basically daring the Chinese to dismantle them. For the most part China, like the Brits before them, has bypassed what little semblance of democracy HK has ever had which has only ever been made by local organizing. But it is all fucked. The fact that Britain and the US have made a mockery of democracy around the world doesn't make China's repression any better. The focus should be on demilitarization and peace-building all around, the world and its people can't afford another massive conflict. But of course this is never anywhere near any serious agenda.

I respect Hasan's position, but I strongly disagree here. Firstly, if there was no US Navy in the area there would absolutely still be massive tension, as everyone in that region hates each other. Most of the region still hates Japan for their horrible actions in WW2, and most of the region hates China for trying to bully them out of their territorial waters. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, it's entirely realistic that China would just invade Taiwan if the US wasn't there. Let's not kid ourselves, the US isn't protecting them for humanitarian reasons, it's for the semiconductor industry, but doing a good thing for a bad reason is still good.

The main reason america is so obsessed with Taiwan and the south china sea is computer chips. Taiwan currently is one of only 2 places that can make a certain part that is required for making computer chips. And computer chip power and memory is literally one of the dingle most powerful tool. Russia and china have always had an almost 10 year delay on the best micro chips which is why technology came so quickly from america. If america was not there china would have already tried to take taiwan because they dont want to be years behind in computer chips. China even set up a spy that then stole a machine and took it back to china and thus you have the incredibly rapid modernization of the chinese military. Its all about computer chips man... that and america for whatever reason doesnt know what to do if they arent making new weapons and toys for the military and using those toys they dont know what to do. This is the worst take i’ve heard from hasanabi, and I like him a lot usually but…. The reasons why the u.s. want to contain china are simple. 1. Maintain free trade in asia. This benefits both countries in asia and the u.s. if the u.s. doesn’t ensure free trade with their military, china will tax these trade routes or block them harming the surrounding countries to china’s benefit. 2. A byproduct of maintaining free trade is maintaining basic human rights. 3. Hasanabi acts as if china ruling the world is equally bad as the u.s. it’s not. China does not allow basic freedoms. It is a totalitarian state. The whole argument by hasanabi just feels immature and like a false equivalency.

If you think about it in a role reversal, imagine China and Cuba agree to building three new bases in the western part of Cuba very very close to Florida. 4:36 the thing they’re directly referencing is agriculture and mass manufacturing. (The us can give a shit about democracy it’s about money.) In China rn agriculture done by the everyday people is treated kinda similar to Britain of the 1920-1950’s ie. You had normal regular people doing a normal amount of work for their normal goods/crop of their choice these people get offered a governmental grant or financing which requires they produce a certain amount and then give it to the officials who will then use it for rations/food trade/etc (standardization of a practice is a good concept when you’re making sterile and non contaminated food for mass populations. However it can lead to financial collapse when suddenly the normal quality crop is considered poor quality/not sellable/illegal. The reason why China/Taiwan is such a big deal is because China uses Taiwan already as a major imports of fruits due to growing conditions Taiwan produces more fruit for some areas of China then even the Chinese market can produce. This leads to china developing their own country brand of the exact same good then banning the trade of the foreign goods (which was noticeably seen in their fruit sales when they dropped Taiwan imports for a Chinese grown variant that was pushed into Chinese farmers to grow instead of the original seeds from Taiwan) Taiwan also culturally grows marijuana for culinary/traditional/medicinal/everyday use and is part of the appeal when traveling to Taiwan you get beautiful beaches and every other food can be an edible if you want it to be. If China takes over Taiwan their legislation of marijuana will make all Taiwan growers of their culturally and historically significant plant as criminals and send them off to an internment camp. China also does this with other countries and nations where they have trade negotiations but loose foreign copyright laws and they control the quality and quantity checks. Their ability to look at a regular person or a farmer of their own country or a foreign country and say ‘we aren’t buying anything you’re now selling’ after that person spent the last 4 years and their life savings to reach the designated quality requirements and the designated quantity requirements. (You force them to grow everything perfectly spend all their money on it and the land/equipment/shipping then tell them you’re not gonna pay it’s all waste product and burn down their farms infront of them claiming it’s contaminated land. Why it contaminated? Because regulations got updated and they weren’t wealthy or aware of how to manage their farms sucks to be the little guy who has to sell their time consuming cultivation to make a living, why couldn’t they own 6 different farms for different plants why not focus on a different meat? Why couldn’t they afford to have 4 years of labor unpaid shouldn’t their production be as mechanical and seamless as possible? If the international trade falls then can’t they sell at a local level (only that drops a price from $20 a cart of açaí berries to about 1.50 on the street because they’re commonly grown locally by every person who also gets a grant to make it for other countries.
