The other scenario is that the UFC wants to have the fight between Stipe and Jones because everyone wants to see it and they know that Stipe's time is limited. They have that fight and then the winner goes on to fight the winner of Pavlovich vs. Aspinall. Stipe will probably retire but Jones might not. You're all forgetting what Chael says all the time. The UFC is a business. They're doing the Stipe/Jones fight because it makes money. Jones already said he would fight Aspinall. We'll see though. Personally I wouldn't think Jones is the GOAT anymore if he didn't fight Aspinall or Sergei. He doesn't need to fight the whole division because he is getting older, but if he doesn't fight one of them it makes him look scared and makes his decline after getting caught for doping more suspicious.

He is not his biggest fan. As a matter of fact he continues to spread inaccurate facts about Jones vs Stipe not selling out almost two weeks out. Jones vs Gane didn't sold out the day or month it was announced. It sold out during fight week. The same thing is expected here. Even Chael was shocked on how well ppv and tickets did considering he was mocking the ticket sales earlier. The Jones vs Stipe ticket price is one of the highest ticket price of the year. 1200 dollars for the cheapest and 80k dollars for the highest. No other fighter apart from Connor can sell out with that kind of price. The ticket would have sold out come fight week. I doubt anybody apart from Chael and few hardcore fans are excited about two relatively unknown heavyweights fighting.

@@jf7199 I think it’ll mean more in the sense that you’re defeating a highly touted heavyweight, as opposed to a guy whose last fight was a brutal KO loss in March 2021. If that fight w/ Stipe does happen, it won’t be for another 10 months, at which point Stipe will be 42 and not have fought for 3.5 years. The ‘legends fight’ is fine, and kinda cool, but Miocic will be disadvantaged relatively speaking. This will be more like when Izzy defeated Silva. Yes, it was fun to watch but Silva was 3 or 4 years past his prime at that point. Izzy’s wins against Whitaker or Costa meant more I’d say - because he was taking on the top guy in their prime (not necessarily about full body of work).

GSP vs Bisping was a similar situation except neither admitted that they planned on retiring after the fight. GSP was adamant that he was going defend against Rob if he won then didn’t. Whitaker was the interim belt holder and became the official champion. The issue is that both Stipe and Jones aren’t hiding that they may retire after their fight. I agree with Chael, the true champion will be crowned with Tom & Serge.

You could argue that GSPs return disrupted the division in terms of being the immediate contender, but in terms of amount of time, it was a pretty normal amount of time. The best way to handle this would probably be: Pavlovich/Aspinal for the undisputed heavyweight championship! Then let the winner defend the belt once on the same ppv or the ppv after Jones fights Stipe for the interim belt! The loser of Stipe/Jones retires and the winner can retire after one last fight for the undisputed heavyweight championship. The only risks are that if Stipe wins its going to be hard to convince him to fight again. And there's no garentee that the winner of Pavlovich/Aspinal also wins against the next challenger in the meantime. Worst-case scenario: The next title challanger will most likley be Jailton or Ciryl. So if the winner of Tom/Sergei gets beaten by the new challanger. We'd get to see Ciryl/Jones2 or Jones basically fighting a lightheavyweight who doesn't cut weight (Almeida) at heavyweight.

The difference is still the trophy. The signifier (title/trophy) signifies the baddest man on the planet, and both Jones and Stipe want to leave on this high note (significance). I remember how DC hung it up in his post-fight interview against Stipe Part III, he retired because he was sure that he would not be getting another title shot, and wasn't interested in fighting the young blood. I don't see any problem with either the outcome. But I realise that neither Stipe nor Jones would want to give up what it means to have the title. Personally, I agree with Khabib too.

USADA contract finishes Dec 31/23. Jone's doctors have now cut his recovery time in half from an estimated +/- 8 months. UFC wanted to cut MacCregors wait time of 6 months/2 clean tests reentering the testing pool shorter so he can compete. We all know that Jone's has a VERY difficult time competing clean under normal circumstances. Let alone trying to take on arguably the best heavyweight of all time after a 3 year layoff. That would undoubtedly be the biggest TESTOSTERONE of his career. Hold tight we just might get a Peeko into whats really going on behind the the UFC curtain. :)

Dana int going to strip Jon’s of the strap a week after his surgery, or make an interim belt. There should be a heavyweight tournament for the belt. Theirs so many titles floating around that being champion doesn’t even matter anymore. Jones and stipe will draw the same amount of PPV buys regardless. It’s time to start getting these heavyweights fighting. The division has been stuck in the mud for years now. Have the tournament and whoever turns it down release them, unless they’re hurt. I remember when Stipe screamed at Dana through the cage to give him a title shot back in the day, and Dana said he's next because he didn't like being yelled at by a guy that size 😂. Stipe at that point in his career would have fought Jon, Tom and Sergei on the same card. He would have taken an Interim fight with Sergei. He's in a different place in his career now. Jon won the belt by not fighting the undisputed champ, and his first defense was going to be against a semi-retired former champion who was coming off a loss. To me, the heavyweight title is as big of a mess as bamtamweight belt was during Aljo years. Sergei and Tom have gotten to the title fight the right way. There was a pool of heavyweight contenders during the years Jon and Stipe were inactive that all competed against each other. Sergei and Tom are the two guys who emerged from top of that pool. They are currently the 2 best heavyweight fighters in the world. Whoever wins this fight will truly be the Champion. Not just because they beat all the other contenders, but because neither the current champ nor the heavyweight goat want anything to do with them. That's how I know which belt is real, and which is a creation of the UFC marketing machine. Jon vs Stipe is a legacy veteran fight like Diaz/Ferguson. It doesn't need to be for a belt to be huge. If neither guy wants to fight contenders anymore, their fight should not be for the undisputed belt. It will just continue the divisional mess.
