Nintendo's renders having just a few pieces of ultra detailed work is actually an ingenious way of making the entire piece seem more detailed than it actually is. A random thing you can hone-in on and see the love and craftsmanship put into it goes a long way in making your art feel and look high end.

This is what really stood out to me. Nintendo's choices on what to make ultra-detailed in renders, along with what they chose to leave as cartoonish. Usually though it's clothes/hair that gets tons of detail, while the characters themselves (skin, eyes, mouth etc) look simple enough.

Then he stopped, frozen in an expression of silent horror, before he grabbed my hand. And forced it into his hair. Again and again he made me feel it. "It" was the unspeakable torment Mario felt for on his head. He could not escape what grew out of his scalp. "It" was attached to his head like a blood-sucking lamprey. "It" was a monster. "It" made Mario a monster. Now Mario was infecting me too! Again and again, Mario's vice-like grip forced my fingers through the strands of his hair... ... until a horrendous howl finally broke free from the rusty cage of his vocal chords. That's when I blacked out. I just woke up. And this video is playing. Mario is gone. The door to my house is wide open.

That isn't even my problem with Mario at this point. Imagine you're going about your business, living life, on your way to visit your sickly mother...
