I cannot describe just how existentially terrifying it is to hear someone with the supposed obligation to protect me say they'd rather "be judged by 12." It's also grossly misleading, because cops have a different set of legal principles applied to them, specifically Qualified Immunity. They aren't going to even be "judged by 12." @@uanime1 It's rare for any police to face conviction for fatal shootings of civilians. Every year in the US, the police kill 900-1,000 civilians, but between 2005 and 2019, only 35 ever faced conviction. Only 4% of police calls involve violent crime at all, and an analysis of incidents involving police even in cities with high crime rates found that only 1% of cases fit the FBI definition of violent crime. So your statement about "preventing criminals from attacking people" has no basis in reality. The part where you mentioned cops having to watch videos of other cops being murdered during training reminded me of a video I watched about Andrew Brannan. The KZbinr JCS did a video talking about the case; he was a SEVERELY PTSD-stricken Vietnam war veteran in the 90’s who had an episode after not taking his meds and ended up murdering a cop after being pulled over for speeding. What’s interesting is, most people who talk about the case dont view Brannan as some monster because they sympathize with how fucked up the war made him (he witnessed like a dozen of his friends get blown to bits during the war), military members who didn’t even KNOW him defended him during his trial because of it; but he wound up getting the death penalty anyways because the murder was recorded and shocked the jury so deeply by how brutal it was. It was clearly a freak accident that couldn’t have been prevented other than by... you know... not waging a brutal war in Vietnam? Although, What JCS didn’t talk about in his video was that, Regardless of all the uniqueness of the situation, it hasn’t stopped the video from being the most popular one showed to cops in training without ANY CONTEXT prior.
@Ebiscuses3 жыл бұрын
It’s sad because the cop who was murdered seemed to understand the situation in the video. He showed restraint because he knew he was dealing with a mentally ill person and didn’t want to murder him, yet police forces DEMONIZE him for not using deadly force, and condition officers to think what happened that day was some normal occurrence and not some freak accident caused by a horrible WAR.

There's a certain irony behind Grossman's "wolves" metaphor. Wolf attacks on humans are extremely rare in modern times, and you can count the number of fatal encounters on one hand. You're far more likely to be killed by domestic dogs, with 30-50 fatalities occurring every year in the US due to dog bites. So while everyone is terrified of wolves coming out of nowhere and attacking them, nobody suspects the dogs they use to guard their property will ever turn on them.

There's one point I like to make which isn't really broached in this video, and that's to approach the subject from a wholly logistical perspective without having to moralize anything. By their inherent nature, police are a *reactive* institution. They generally arrive *after* a crime has taken place, gather information and conduct investigations. The only real exceptions being when they're harassing citizens in search of minor offences like drug possession so they can pretend to be proactive. This leads to an easy analogy which highlights the whole problem in how we're dealing with crime - Dental health. In this analogy, crime is tooth pain and cops are dentists. As a society, we're letting our teeth rot and then making expensive emergency dental visits regularly, and pretending like that's just how it's supposed to work. What the Defund the Police movement want is for our society to learn how to *brush its fucking teeth* and proactively address the causes of crime *before* it becomes something we need to take drastic action against.

@@badluckrabbit As a paramedic I can speak to this. 1. Lots of people didn't get into EMS because they wanted to help people, but because it is a job. During my preceptorship I was shocked by the amount of disgruntled and disinterested paramedics who were less interested in positive patient outcomes and more interested in getting them to the hospital so that they're "someone else's problem". 2. Bad experiences with patients make people jaded. Seeing the same belligerent people day in and day out wears on you. Especially if they often present as agitated and hostile. It makes medics more prejudicial of "similar people" (i.e. homeless people). It isn't right, but when you've almost been stabbed by more than one person, the prejudice starts to become reflexive as a defense mechanism. 3. Compassion fatigue. It becomes very exhausting to be emotionally invested in every patient you see, especially if it's hour 8 of a 12 hour shift. Factor in PTSD from bad calls, and you can forget about any kind of empathetic response toward a patient. Lots of senior medics you see are just going through the motions, because they've learned that caring too much can get you hurt; in the long run that will break you. 4. Actually shittiness and prejudice from their upbringing. Definitely is a thing. It only gets exacerbated by the points listed above.

How would this translate to European countries, like the UK, Sweden or Norway? I've experienced that people in those countries hold the police in high regard, and when told that the institution has to go, often say that there's no need, as the police is not weaponized and brutal like the American one.
@KayAndSkittles3 жыл бұрын
In the UK at the very least the police are still enormously racist even if they murder people at a much, much lower rate. Obviously the contradictions are much less obvious in Europe than in the USA right now but in many European countries try protesting against capital like they've done in France and you'll see how "not brutal" the police can be, unfortunately. It's definitely true that public opinion of the police is higher throughout Europe and tbh public opinion of the police in the US only really started to dip in recent years. The problem is the role police play in defending capital, whether or not they're killing tons of people every year. And so the case for defunding and abolition remains the same. It's actually a huge problem in Europe that people use the US as an extreme example to ignore problems in their own police force, so the focus on the FUNCTION they serve rather than their body count is more useful I think.
@GA1313E3 жыл бұрын
As a Swede, a country that spends very little on police and has a relatively non-militarized. There are still regularly incidents where the police (and other organizations such as security guards) make the headlines and are releavled to have similar problems to the american police. Like having racist slurs in their training programs, keeping lists of activities of minorities who have not commited crimes, racial profiling, lying and protecting their own as well as use of excessive force against people of colour, people with disabilities and agaist protestors. For example: in 2014 when a nazi political party held a speech in malmö as a part of their election campaign there was a public uproar and more than 800 people crammed on to the square to protest (against the 7 nazis...). The police in Malmö hit people with their cars, lied about "antifa" bringing ballons with chemicals to scare their dogs and had their mounted officers charge into a crowd of mosty peaceful protestors. The scale is not the same, but the problems are the same. Defunding seems a less potent slogsn as they are underfunded. But the racism and militarization is the same.
@subalternprecariat3 жыл бұрын
I would say that you're not speaking to the racial minorities or the marginalised people in those societies to get a better sense what different demographics of people in those places feel about police. This next line isn't directed towards you necessarily, but I found that it's a common conceit among the social majority, particularly ones situated in the middle-class to say "well, we're not like those crazy Americans" and do no investigation on how their societies engage in policing. Just because the UK (for example) doesn't have a George Floyd, doesn't mean it doesn't have a Sean Rigg, Seni Lewis, Mark Duggan, Dean Atkinson, or Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman. Ask the women in the UK how safe they feel about police knowing what happened to Sarah Everard, who wasn't black or working-class. Always ask from the most marginalised. I bet that the answer is always the same.

It's a misconception to think it's just the training that contributes to the "I'd rather be judged by twelve" mentality. Even if they've been trained to avoid violent actions, if the officers know that the moment they step out of line that they'll experience no consequences, then the training is pointless. The police unions help contribute to this too, as they help bring back officers that have been fired for misconduct (including incidents which led to fatalities), and basically prooving to these officers, and all the other officers as well, that there is no consequences for brutalizing civilians.

The first thing that needs to be done about the police is a complete turnover. Nobody who is currently a police officer should remain a police officer, and should be barred from ever getting a job in that capacity ever again. The very fabric of police culture is tainted on a fundamental level. This is why trying to ban the airing of Grossman's seminars doesn't work; the veterans and police "unions" will show them to newbie cops on their own time. Banning things like choke holds or the like won't work, because existing cops will just tell the newbies to ignore it. Obviously, policing as an institution needs to be defunded, shrunk, and replaced by non-violent departments with democratic, community-oriented oversight. That's absolutely necessary. But if there's any force of armed officers that would exist in the new civil paradigm, they must be fresh blood, untainted by decades (rather centuries) of toxic police culture. If that doesn't happen, we'll never make true progress. On the upside, removing all current cops from the "pool" of officers would neatly solve the issue of the police "unions" resisting the change. They can't use their collective non-action as a political threat if we explicitly don't want them operating in the first place. They would be threatening us with a good time.
