Thank you, when I turned 16 I started to have more confident doubts, and I felt very little cognitive dissonance for about 3 years. Now I’m 20, and it’s all coming back again. It’s so hard with how much information people try to sell on the internet these days. Anyone can make profit on KZbin off of promoting Christianity. (Jordan Peterson for example, who I think of as a very intelligent human) but no matter how much evidence there is for or against Christianity, I still can’t seem to be a good Christian. I’ve tried going back to the faith (mostly for better mental health) but it doesn’t last, I eventually do something that brings more shame upon myself. I can’t accept all of myself in it. And how could one become completely of light in a world that suffocates all with darkness?
@CaptainX20126 ай бұрын
A good Christian doesn't exist. It's hard to be a Christian, that's why Jesus died and he's so forgiving. Everytime you fall, Christ will forgive you. That's basically the core fundamental message of Christianity.
@MrFossil367ab45gfythАй бұрын
Well, just because new information arises doesn't mean one must change their mind. Here are some options: 1. Rethink position. 2. Discard old view. 3. Adapt old view to new information. Also, one can doubt what they believe. I've had doubts before about my faith, but I've found ways to satisfy them.
@WadeAllen001Ай бұрын
Don't those options all entail changing your mind? But I guess in this comment I can be more clear than I was in this rather short video, because you're right in a sense. New information doesn't necessarily mean you need to change your position, but it does mean you need to change your position with respect to that information. Perhaps you believe something for 3 reasons. If you find out 1 of those reasons is false, the other 2 reasons may be strong enough for you to continue believing it, but your mind must still be changed in the sense that you no longer should accept that 3rd reason as supporting evidence for the thing you believe (using the example in the video, I could continue believing that the guy is an asshole after I learn that he didn't cheat on his girlfriend, but I would need some other reason for believing that). So basically, if new information comes along, the only way your position should stay the same is if there's still more evidence in favor of your position than against it. But what so often happens with people is that they encounter some information that causes them to believe an idea, then that information turns out to be false and they have no other reason to believe it, but instead of changing their position they seek out new information (often conjuring it up) in order to not change their position. So to continue the example from the video: I find information that leads me to believe the guy was cheating on his girlfriend, which makes me think he's an asshole. I later learn he wasn't cheating, and that was the only reason I had for thinking he's an asshole. But now I've already established this negative attitude toward him in my mind, and it's easier for me to create a new reason to believe he's an asshole on the spot than it is for me to admit I was wrong and change my mind about him. Which I fear is what satisfying doubts so often amounts to.

Always looked at religion like the 1st 3 Jurassic Park movies. The 1st is Judaism, the OG, the one that came 1st and set off the franchise. The 2nd being Christianity, the most popular and the one that most people argue is the "best one", but wouldn't exist without the 1st one before it. Then there's Islam, the 3rd Jurassic Park movie. Definitely exists, but loyal fans of the 2nd one would like to pretend that it never existed and some would even argue that it should've stopped with the 2nd movie. Some people only saw Jurassic Park 1, some saw 1 and 2, some saw 1, 2, & 3 or only 3 and so forth. (See where this is going?) And then there's people that's only seen Land Before Time or Flinstones (Non Abrahamic religions like Buddhism & Hinduism). Now it's a party...

Great video and sadly I have to say that I agree most religious people are narrow minded and ignore evidence. I am a deeply religious person however and I strongly believe in constantly questioning my own preconceived ideas and world view. I believe something that is true can withstand and holdup to close examination and critical investigation. As a young earth and creation believing geologist have examined both sides of the argument and using a critical mind have wrestled with the evidence around us. In the end both sides (creation or evolution) both require an amount of faith to believe. I just don’t have enough faith to believe in evolution based on the empirical and non empirical evidence around me. Thanks for raising the importance of questioning what we believe... more people both religious and non religious need to perform this self introspection. We may be shocked that in doing so our preconceived traditionally and world view come crumbling down.... all I can say is that I have been through this and can now say that I am more open to other world views as a result. May we all seek to honestly find the truth which aligns with the evidence not our own bias.

I'm like you that I question what people tell me, but I see no evidence that evolution is not real, which proves nothing but I do see pretty convincing evidence that humans are animals, have been around for millions of years and our genetics seem to change over time. It makes sense, and I have used evolutionary techniques to heal myself. That is proof in my mind. The only possibility that it might be wrong is if god is purposely making evolution look real to fool us. That seems absurd. I have seen science experiments that show mutation and adaptation happening all of the time.
@azzac53932 жыл бұрын
@@ClassicJukeboxBand Thanks for sharing. Gene mutation is a good example, what we find when genes mutate is a removal of information in the genetic sequence. Over time every living organism has experienced mutation. It is a form of genetic decay which begins at birth and ends at death. Interesting to note that no new genetic information has ever been added to a sequence. Only some information is removed as a result of damaging decay (mutation) to the genetic sequence. In my search I have yet to find any evidence that any organism has ever evolved into a new species (ie ape to human). All organisms share very similar genetic codes, the key is that even 1% new genetic sequence makes a very significant difference between what is reflected as a species. The DNA sequence is so complex that even this 1% is in real numbers millions of new nucleotides. A major gap within evolutionary theory is the so-called ‘waiting time problem’. No-one disagrees that to cause all of the anatomical changes required to transform an ape-like creature (the supposed common ancestor of chimps and humans) into a human would take millions of DNA mutations. This is because there are millions of nucleotide (‘DNA letter’) differences between chimps and humans. And in the evolutionary timeline, this is supposed to have happened in six to seven million years. The problem in a nutshell is that scientific modeling and calculations show that it would take way too long for these specific mutations to arise and become established within a so-called ‘hominin’ population. From my experience as a geologist every “transitionary” fossil I have examined was simply a unique species and never the forerunner or successor of another species.

My best friend passed away 5 years ago. Sometimes I get signs and feelings and think it’s her. But I always think if in my mind I’m just being biased and my brain is subconsciously seeing what it wants to.. and a part of me feels maybe there is something after life. I want to think so but I don’t want to be disappointed. It’s depressing to think she’s just dead and doesn’t even have a consciousness to think of me.
@WadeAllen001 Жыл бұрын
It is depressing, but that's part of life. Our brains create simulations of other people we know. The better we know them, the more life-like the simulation. Really, all we ever know of a person is our simulated version of them that we store in our brain. It's unfortunate that your friend is dead, but you still carry a piece of her with you whoever you go, that version of her that you created in your brain. So in a way she still exists, though it's a completely non mystical way.

Good video. Explains my father very well. He's was born into a religious family, finally woke up to the absurdness of Christianity, then like a coward when he got into his 70's reverted back into religion again. My dad is not only a member of Mensa and Intertel, but still as smart as he thinks he is, will not accept any logical argument from me about the lack of evidence for the existence of god. I have had chats with my dad where I completely shredded his brain-dead, infantile arguments about the existence of god; yet would not accept a fool proof, logical, practically air-tight argument from me. This is what religious morons do. They just refuse to see reality, and no amount of logic, science, common sense or argument is going to change their minds. I understand this because my mother fell into the religion trap back in her 40's. Now that she's 82, she is basically an imbecile. She has let her belief in religion rob her of what critical thinking skill she had left. I can see the same thing happening to my dad too. He is basically a moron now...sad how religion ruins people... BTW, my father went from believing in evolution, quantum mechanics and Joseph Campbell into believing that the earth is only 6,000 years old, that god put dinosaur bones in the ground and the Rapture...talk about losing your mind...this is what religion has done to my parents...completely ruined them.

Very good video.Yeah religious people really do that but the problem is that most scientists also ignore supernatural events such as revelations to fit their story.They say it must be fake etc so basically both sides are in some sort of denial.Of course for people who never truly had some sort of "supernatural" experience and only believe in logic and proof they will never be able to go deep into the subject.
@WadeAllen0014 жыл бұрын
The problem there is that supernatural events are not testable. They can't be scientifically certified to actually exist. The best you can do is take people's word for it, and people's word is a pretty dubious thing. In my mind it's a far more reasonable position to assume that things that can't be tested are likely not true while things that can be tested are, instead of the reverse of believing that things that can't be tested are true while things that can be tested aren't.

When I was an atheist I would always dismiss superstition etc. But I started to question the assumptions that science is built on like the uniformity of reality etc. I agree that these assumptions have not been really challenged by observation but like you said with the various supernatural testimonies, I doubt materialism is the ultimate answer. However, even with materialism there are many who experience hallucinations that a chemical byproduct of the mind, point is that there are possible explanations. Currently, I am a hard agnostic and I am getting into religious texts like the bible and quran. For fixing it in other people? Probably not. For fixing it in yourself? I guess the thing to do is try to avoid letting your conclusion lead you to evidence that supports it and instead let the evidence lead you to a conclusion that fits, to always be open to being wrong, to think of your ideas as prototypes rather than finished products, and when talking with people you disagree with to merely ask them questions and allow yourself to seriously consider their answers, and to learn what the other side thinks so that you're not insulating yourself from any possible evidence. There is always the worry that any of us might actually be an idiot without realizing it, and if we listen to bad arguments with an open mind we'll be convinced by them. I used to work with a girl who would always be convinced by the most recent argument she heard. I'd give her reasons that astrology was bullshit, and she'd accept them. But then a few days later someone would tell her why astrology was legit and she'd go right back to believing in it again, along with believing conspiracy theories about fluoride that I'd also have to debunk. So we've got to strike a balance of listening to all arguments but also to scrutinize them all to the same degree. If we don't do either of those things then we're failing at rationality. Of course, all that is easier said than done. "Think differently" is a pretty difficult thing to just start doing.

This video suffers from confirmation bias. Just the history of the five main religions shows its bias. take Christianity ... before it had even become its own religion, ie it was considered a sect of Judaism, people in it were asking themselves questions and trying to find an answer. The problem isnt in religion bit in human beings: 1) people dont like admitting they dont have an answer to something; and 2) people dont like admitting they could be wrong. For example, before Albert Einstein discovered that the universe was accelerating from some point, he and al "reasoned" scientists believed the universe was a constant... to believe in a universe that had a beginning was old fashioned and gave credence to the God story of creation. Then they did their experiments observing the "past" with telescopes, did the math and .. uhoh.. universe seems to jave a beginning... of course none of the thiught, oh, maybe there is a God.
@WadeAllen001 Жыл бұрын
I said in the video that confirmation bias isn't exclusive to religion. Also we can't say with any certainty that the universe had a beginning. It would be a misrepresentation of science to say that. The Big Bang is simply the farthest back in time we can "see." There could very well be something that preceded it, but we can't know. And even if we did know with certainty that the universe started, that in no way would lead us to the conclusion that god exists. That's a non-sequitur. Furthermore it requires special pleading to suggest that, because of course if we're saying that everything requires some prior cause, then god would require one too. Whatever exemptions we make for god on that point could also be made for the universe itself.

True religiousness is actually the exact opposite of what you describe. It includes all factors of reality and does not rule out a god who involves himself in our world.

You seem to have the presupposition that religious people aren’t thinking critically while science lovers are. And that science lovers are not and should not be religious by default. I’m a Christian and my belief is focused in the evidence for the historical Jesus and for God (something the Bible tells Christians to do). There are many other Christians here on KZbin that use the same reasoning. While this video a great refutation of poor reasoning, it is not a refutation of religion.

Perhaps I could've spent longer on this in the video, but I know that I do say in the video that confirmation bias isn't a problem exclusive to religious people and that it isn't the only problem with religion, it's just an aspect of religious thinking. I don't mean to suggest that science lovers always think critically or logically about everything, because that's not true. But yes I do see science and religion as fundamentally opposed. That's not to say that one can't be a religious scientist, as of course there are many of those, but it is to say that to the extent that one is religious one cannot be a good scientist, and vice versa. For instance, a young earther cannot be a good geologist. And on the other side, somebody who requires testable, empirical evidence to believe things (a scientist) cannot be a good christian. But I say "to the extent that one is religious" because I'm aware how good humans are at compartmentalizing their beliefs. Religious scientists think scientifically about most things, but use a different set of rules (or standards of evidence) when it comes to their religion. For example, the evidence surrounding the resurrection of Jesus would not be considered anywhere close to good enough except for the fact that you already believe it happened. And that's what I mean by confirmation bias being a problem with religion.

No evidence, you're likely just another case of childhood indoctrination into religion. If you believe in messiahs, resurrections, noah's ark, miracles and prophecies then you are as gullible as they get. Please grow up..

Bro but hinduism or in better way....Sanatanism is not that type ,it is open, scientific , you can ask doubts yet having a spiritual connection ....

atheism is mostly just a smokescreen for anti christian bigotry of insecure people who had a bad experience with more fundamentalist versions of spirituality.

27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.James 1:27 King James Version . people seem to always use the word religion in a very vague way.essentially according to your use of the word science is religion.its based upon believing without much question the theories of men.funny there are many Christian scientists most of the famous one were christian.without Christianity science would not exist as God is the creator (Jesus is God) of all that can be tested .or found out through experiment

This is only a general view of religion it looks like you have only experienced one religion (probably Christianity) and now think every other religion or at least most others are the same

I don't believe I specified that in this video. It seems we came from the process of evolution, and before that from the big bang. As to whether the big bang is "something coming from nothing" or if something else preceded the big bang, who can say? But I certainly won't claim to know something that's currently no evidence for, such as that god did it or that god even exists. Also, coming to one conclusion over another is not evidence of bias. Confirmation bias is when you have a conclusion before looking into the data, and only following the data that supports your conclusion despite the existence of other data. Coming to a reasonable conclusion is when you have no previous attachment to any particular conclusion, you look through all the data available to you, and you decide what is most likely true based off of where the strongest evidence points. I did not "believe" in or have any investment in the big bang or evolution before learning the facts about them, quite the opposite in fact. I actually used to find the idea of evolution silly because I knew nothing about it and the version of it I had in my head was a nonsensical strawman, much like many other christians (as I was raised in a christian household). Nor am I attached to the idea of evolution or the big bang currently. If I came across evidence for something else that was stronger than for something I currently think to be true, or if something I think to be true was proven incorrect, then I'd immediately adopt that view of reality instead. So no, I don't think it's fair to say I'm biased.

Science update itself according to new knowledge, why religious concepts stay the same for millions of years, the story of Eve and Adam kicked out of haven because of an apple, a 7 years old person could not believe that. And saying we came from God is not an answer, I can answer the same question by sawing we came from the Dude, my answer is also good from a religious perspective, no one can prevent me from believing in the Dude!

Thanks for the video. There are some problems I have with your video. Because of your belief in confirmation bias and your own belief that you are open-minded, you come from a very cynical standpoint, and direct that cynicism towards a straw man of religious people. You’re using your own experiences with surface-level apologetics to help leverage an argument that you already believe you’ve won, whether you are able to admit it or not, which is obvious from the video. My question would be, why are you so cynical of everyone except scientists and those who think like you and believe that they are “open-minded?” Your own bias which is unavoidable, leads you to not investigate any further into the other sides’ arguments, but to stop at personal experiences with people who haven’t developed their understanding and questioning past a beginner level. You have very little understanding of Christianity or religion, and all of your analogies in the video to disprove it are attempts to keep your “puzzle as simple as possible.” Throw away your close-minded cynicism and understand that religion for thousand of years has been a sincere attempt by humanity to look at the evidence and draw reasonable conclusions about our existence. This is much like science, (whereas religion tends to look past the physical aspect of our reality for the reason that it’s finite) except science always excludes our “humanity” which if you investigated further is not able to be explained by any scientific method. Science only looks at the material part of our reality, it will never explain what “time” is, what “consciousness” is, what the universe really is, because how can you explain the existence of the fundamentals using the fundamentals? A program on a computer cannot explain itself unless it’s told how to from an outside source. At best your video is a fair criticism of shallow religious reasoning and a genuine call for people to be more open minded and to logically investigate/question everything. I encourage you to look deeper and with more trust in the sincerity of your fellow humans (coming from a former atheist and a continuing lover of science)
