And worth it. If we don't support companies in allied nations, we are only hurting ourselves in the long run. Look at how empty their shop is of employess, and all because folks think battery-powered lights are better.... or chinese slave labor makes lanterns cheaper. Better to buy Winged Wheel or Feuerhand and support good people trying to make a living, and know you'll get a good product for your money.

Pure love from start to finish! The whole process, the attention to every detail! That's why I love the label (Made in Japan) It's made for a lifetime! ❤
As another woman (American) who works with metal fabrication I love seeing this and would cherish owning one of these wonderfully crafted lamps. Thank you.

Good chance she is the business owner. Few workers last for a few months at any one job due to minimum wages and no benefits. There is no such thing as full time honest jobs anymore. Unless you own all the means of production, you are worthless

@@ph11p3540 That's right she is the current president and hurricane lamp craftsman
Although only the basic aspects of production are shown in the video, it's nice to watch the love and care put into the manufacture of these lamps. The lady doing all the work is the grand-daughter of the company's founder, Tomekichi Bessho. She is a brave lady who as a 20 year old young woman put aside college and other career choices to take over the family company saving it from closing down.

Here in India, they were hanging outside every hardware shop in every city till about 2005 when LEDs came in. A good quality one costed about 3 USD. Other run of the mill ones about 1 dollar. Almost similar to the one in this video except they were painted. I still have few in my collection. Take them on hikes especially in winters for their mild warm heat. They consume just about 100 ml of kerosene a night which is simply amazing.

@@at33williamson40 frequent power outages due to societal "mismanagement" is (hopefully) a temporary thing, not something to build a business on. As for natural disasters.. there is solar and batteries these days. My point was that this is not a sustainable business going forward.. nothing is.

Stunning! The only comment I can add is that if this lamp was being manufactured in the UK in 2024, some know nothing manager, with a worthwhile degree in media studies would screw the whole thing upby deciding that the company could save tuppence per year by dispensing with the bubble wrap and cutting down on the amount of sticky tape used in the packaging.

Old world craftsmanship still persists even with lithium LED lanterns. These type of lanterns have withstood the test of time. Too bad they don’t exist in more homes for backup or everyday use. I’ve got my grandfather’s. Just needs some extra-spare wicking and it’ll be good for another 100 years. If they don’t outlaw lamp oil (kerosene)!

I'm from the Philippines and we still own this type of lamp together with our solar powered powerstation as it is so useful during typhoon/supertyphoon induced power cuts that can even last for a month

One of mankind's most useful inventions. For Safety sake I never use Kerosene but rather Olive Oil because you cannot get a flash fire with olive oil as you do so with Kerosene if the lamp is knocked over. Olive oil has been in use for a few thousand years throughout the Mediterranean area.
