I've watched the Promised Neverland anime and the opening seemed really cool, but then that twist in the first episode blew me away! XD No wonder there have been tons of memes about it everywhere!!!

My first clue that this wasn't a happy-go-lucky slice of life manga was the fact that its by Shonen Jump, a manga magazine aimed at young boys that have published other action packed adventure manga such as Naruto, One Piece, and even Death Note. So if they can publish Death Note, you can't underestimate how dark their manga can go. But a slice of life, happy manga is not their style.

The anime for this series was my introduction to it and it's phenomenal! I hope you continue the book club discussions with this series because I've only read volume 1 and would love to continue on and discuss!

This volume was not what I was expecting. I didn’t know what the plot was about, but I knew it was horror. Even so, I did not expect it to go into this direction and I’m pleasantly surprised by it which is great. I am restraining myself from reading volume 2 until you put out the discussion posts on Goodreads!!!!!!

Lol. The "this was not what I was expecting" is killing me. I got to that Ch. 1 twist and was like, "What the eff is Jesse making me read????". As usual, editing to add comments and time stamps (and numbers this time so there's less counting). :56 1. HOOOOOWWWWW did you get happy go lucky out of that description? I mean, I wasn't expect BRAINS AS FOOD, but I was definitely expecting some angst from the description. 1:19 2. I take a bite into a donut and it's unexpectedly jelly-filled, we will have problems 🤣 Good thing I don't feel that way about books. 2:23 3. I saw the tattoos and legit thought we were getting some weird, fantasy version of Auschwith. 2:48 4. I just realized that the numbers were in, like, the thousands and i... 😱😱😱😱😱😱 3:33 5. I mean, they ARE being brainwashed, so you weren't wrong. 5:04 6. And this is where /I/ was like "Well, that escalated quickly" 🤣 6:12 7. I mean, as smart as these kids are, it probably didn't take them long to realize that the demons were coming back whether "Mom" was alive or not. Plus, they're attached to her. Makes since that "murder her" wasn't sure their first reaction. (I, however, cannot say the same. I'm very stabby when it comes to fictional characters.) 9:09 8. My own Supid Thoery: So since this video started I've been lowkey playing around with the idea of the tests maybe being a way to pick out future caretakers. It makes sense that they'd want the best of the best to continue on (especially since we know Mom was a former orphan). I bet at some point, they'll offer Emma the chance to be a "Mom" if she'll find out who's plotting to escape the orphanage (or something like that). 10:49 9. What does it say about me that I heard "The newest book they have is from 2010" and I was like, "Well, at least there's a cha c their library has the Percy Jackson series." I mean, there's probably no chance. The same people that think it's cool to raise children as food, probably also think novels rot brains... 11:02 10. I wanna know where all the other people are??? Are we dealing w alternate dimensions? Is this on Earth? Or is it a little spot of normal in a demon world??? 11:42 11. I know I harp on representation every time, but Sister Krone being Black just... was a choice, especially considering manga/animes poor track record w representing Black people. She is bordering on Jim Crow caricature in the way she's drawn. 12:07 12. I'm telling you, they probably pluck kids that would make good caretakers up go, "So you can die or you can run a farm, which do you choose?" I wouldn't be surprised if that threat of death isn't hanging over them their entire career like Damocles sword. Screw up and you're dead. 12:33 13. I'm surprised someone hasn't found the tracking devices sooner. I feel like they might be better place somewhere with more flesh to disguise the fact that it's there. Yeah, this manga was a ride and so, SOOOOO stressful. Lol. But I'm liking it! I'm hooked. And it seems like, because of the two month time frame, it might not be one of those series that's ridiculously drawn out. (I'm looking at you, Naruto.) It feels like the mangaka has a definite plan, which I like.

Yeah I think that it’s what they’re doing for ‘mom’ too but I’m still unsure if the monsters will pass up premium ‘food’ for that

i just wanted to say i've been reading the promised neverland since 2017 and your reactions to it just make me smile so much, you have no idea. since i'm completely caught up in terms of the chapters that are being published online, i'm just sitting here laughing at your theories and what you think of all the characters. i've reread volume one so much that the plastic is literally peeling off of the cover and it's bent in more than a few places but it's because this is pretty much my comfort manga. i love horror but, more specifically, i love horror when it's able to make you really feel for the characters and what they're going through. and this was the first series where i actually got to share a birthday with my favorite character who i connect to on such an emotional level that it makes my heart ache, which is norman! i thank this manga every single day for what it's done to me, and the true hope it's given me because it really is the brightest light on the darkest of my days. i'm sad it's actually going to end soon - most likely this year - but it just makes me so happy that you're enjoying it so far!

As soon as I started reading this one I had "Never Let Me Go" vibes, when I got to the twist the world turned upside down! Damn! I could not put the book down! There's so much more coming ahead... What you said about the Mom not having a heart, she does, it's actually a heart-shapped rock, but it's a heart 😂 I bought volume 13 yesterday, now I'll have to wait for the next to be published in april...
