A good modification would be to completely extend the knees while on the floor and flexing at the hip more while the back is straight and not bending downwards. (Physio Student here)

@@kimbarsegyan lack even enough extension to reorient the pelvis properly in the first place. by extending the knees you'll limit out the hamstrings and theyll never get the pelvic angle right.

It doesn't create a load if you make your back straight, rhomboids flexed, and flex your quads :/ so sad people don't know how to stretch and videos like this are somewhat deceptive. it's important to flex your quads, tighten your glutes... Stretch from the bottom of your butt not your lowback when stretching the hams and that way you protect the joints

More important is it to challenge your hamstring muscle with weight through a full range of motion; also in a stretched position, slowly and under control. Stretching the hamstrings passively does'nt yield any fitness effect for most people.

Give your belly some space by taking your heels a little bit wider. It's not about reaching your toes or getting all the way down: concentrate on getting long in the spine, then rocking forward on the pelvis.

@clray123

Sorry, but this is only partly true. The limitation that makes people round their back and irritate their spine does not come just from "under average" or "normal" hamstring length. Rather, it comes from tight/spasming muscles around the butt and front hips and spinal erector muscles too weak to stretch out the properly (the action commonly described as "raising the sternum") in forward bending position (rather, the vertebrae "collapse" onto themselves as shown). So it's true that you should avoid this stretch (or just don't bend deeply) if you can't maintain a stable straight spine while bending forward, but the reason is not your short hamstrings. The proof is in the fact that adding other stretches that don't target the hamstrings, but rather the hip area, adductors, groin and what not will allow you to bend forward much more deeply with comfort and without rounding the spine.

My back just cannot flatten/straighten when I bend down. I have tried with no improvement by sucking in my stomach, posterior and anterior tilt, pivoting from hip joints. Do you have any advice?
@clray123
@clray123 2 жыл бұрын
@@weihawang4246 Some ideas: 1. Try the gluteus medius stretch shown in "Gluteus Medius Stretch and Strengthen" at 4:50. 2. "Wide angle seated forward bend" with support - works best with a gym ball in front of you, which you can roll forward to adjust depth. 3. From "wide angle seated forward bend" roll backwards and throw your legs behind you into "plough pose" (knees can be bent). Repeat several times. 4. "Daily practice of a handstand artist" stretch shown at 2:20. Also "Daily Stretching routine for beginners" from the same channel. 5. Get yourself one of those "massage guns" and massage along your spine.
@clray123
@clray123 2 жыл бұрын
@@weihawang4246 I forgot one - instead of bending forwards from standing, start from a deep squat position with knees pressing against the chest. Then, while keeping knees against chest, unbend the legs as much as your flexibility allows - repeat slowly several times. Oh, and while doing forward bends, always direct your knees inwards to avoid pain in lower back.
